The Last British Airways B747 Flight - An Emotional Farewell

  • I travelled to the UK to see the Final British Airways 747 flight and landing. During this trip, I was able to see all 3 British Airways 747 Retro Liveries across the countryside in England and Wales.
My first stop was Dunsfold Aerodrome, where I visited the Landor livery 747. I was able to go inside and take a last look at the cabin and the cockpit. Then I drove to Cotswold Airport to see the Negus livery 747. Cotswold Airport CEO Suzannah Harvey personally gave me a tour, explaining the work being done to save the 747.
My last stop was in Cardiff, Wales where the BOAC livery 747 flew out from Cardiff to St Athan; it was only a short ferry flight but it was a very emotional one nonetheless, as this was the final BA 747 flight. I was at St Athan to watch the Final BA 747 landing. It was a momentous landing with a quick stop on the short runway. After landing, I went inside the 747 to interview the pilots and witness the final power down of the 747. It was the end of an era for the British Airways 747.
All 3 BA retro 747 liveries (Landor, Negus and BOAC) will be preserved in the UK.
Thanks to British Airways and SpeedBird TV for sharing some great footage: / speedbirdtv

It is sad seeing these planes being retired as they have such an elegance to them. I spent many hours on BA 747's flying between London Heathrow and Phoenix Arizona. It always felt so good being in them even if I was in economy class. One of the best times was flying out over Scotland (home) and heading outt over the Atlantic ocean and down below was St Kilda.

From what I understand it was because they wanted to replace the safer 4 engine planes with more fuel efficient 2 engine planes. One benefit is supposed to be that the 2 engine planes are supposed to be able to fly longer without refueling so it should be possible to fly more places direct without a stopover. The reality is that I have not seen any routes that had a stopover change to a direct flight when they replace a 747 route with a 2 engine plane. I think the cost of fuel was probably the only reason.

In general, the system in twins are simpler and thus offer less opportunity for failure. Airbus recognised this when they built the A380, which doesn’t have full Sicilians systems on all of its engines.
Every multiple engine failure in airline history has had a common cause, this more engines would not have helped.

Hi Sam and all others. this was a super emotional video. Thanks. The 747 is exactly as old as I am, and it was always my dream to be a captain on it, but unfortunately, I made it all the way to the 777 left seat and not the 747. Thank you 747 for being an inspiration of an era.

I can still remember my first trip to Asia, an economy flight on the BA 747 Jumbo from Heathrow to HongKong KaiTak in summer 1994. The beautiful air hostess Jane or Janice Lau did a great job. Three weeks later, when I flew back to Europe, she was working in business class and I never saw her again. RIP 747, hopefully this 'Great Reset' that is planned by some psychos can be stopped and we will get our old life back!

Sad to see her go as they all have a soul and a personality and it is the end of an era, but great to see it will be preserved along with the legacy of BOAC. As an avgeek myself since I was a kid and having flown on many variants of the 747 over the years, it truly is emotional to see them disappear. Thanks again Sam, was a nice presentation all round.

The first time when I saw a B747 in person while standing on the airport ground was a few years ago and I don't remember which airport it was, when it had passed by I was just in awe of the size and stood there till she passed by completely. It was a Luftansa B747. Unfortunately hadn't had the luck to fly in one.

I had the pleasure of flying in the upper deck Business on the BA 747 in the BOAC livery on February 28, 2020 from Heathrow to O’Hare. We departed from the B Gates at Heathrow Terminal 5. It looks like it may have been one of the last remaining revenue flights of that aircraft due to the virus. It was my first, and only time flying in the upper deck of a 747 and I only wish I could have savored it more if would have known it was going to probably be the last time. Watching this final flight and shutdown brought a tear.

I'm amazed to see the excitement through other people's eyes! I've been working on planes for over 30 years and I guess the magic is gone. But its really cool to see how all of you react. I helped build so many 747 400 series back in the early 90's that its probable i worked on those very planes you were on! I've since moved onto many other in BA's line up and moved on to inspection years ago. I spend every work day on planes its just hard to feel anything more than the same old mundane repetitive work. I definitely appreciate seeing the magic and passion through your perspective! Great work!
