  • The Epomaker AK84 is a compact 75%, 84-key wireless and hotswappable mechanical keyboard with MacOS compatibility. The keyboard comes in three different case options: aluminum frame with plastic base, full aluminum, and full acrylic. You can also either choose an optical hotswap board, or a mechanical one. The release of this keyboard also introduces the new Chocolate switches and GK2 Silicone keycaps.
    You can order the keyboard from Kickstarter right now for the free GK2 silicone keycaps. Once the AK84 becomes in-stocks, you'll have to pay extra for them.
    I was sent this keyboard for my honest review. I was not paid for the review, and Epomaker did not see the video before it went live.
    Switches in the typing test were Chocolate Reds.

    bruhh you have 4k subs at a 1mil subs production level, you keep this up and you'll see some exponential growth on this channel Jimmy! I got into Mechanical Keyboards this month and you have been the hotbed for beginner knowledge, one thing that strikes me as a newbie is the lack of beginner content which you are producing, it's really helpful!

    Thanks for the detailed review. This material could be good for reducing noise from long nails hitting keys.

    I think a nice grippy silicon key could feel really nice. Maybe have a set with the pointed texture of a "rubber" style key too

    Are the GK1 keycap sets available to buy separately? I love that low height and the rounded aesthetic. And has no LED interference like cherry. Just perfect.Thanks!

      At the moment I don't believe so, but they may be available after the kickstarter

    Im so curious about these silicon keycaps! Does the silicon part interfere in any way from the keys to come back up fast after typing them really hard?

    Where can I get a similar rack with the holders for switches like the one you have? I’ve been looking for them but I haven’t found any.

    Hey! I’m building my first keyboard and was getting some new springs for a switch. What’s the difference between a long spring and a short spring if they have the same spring weight?

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  Před 3 lety

      the longer springs will have a higher "pre-load" because the spring is more compressed in the switch vs the short spring. what this means is that it'll take more initial force to push down the switch vs a shorter spring. i like longer springs (also called slow curve springs)

    Brilliant! I have learned from this video that in order to justify having several keyboards I just need to have more operating systems. This means if I add Linux at home and windows at work I could even have six keyboards!
    help.

      @jimmynguyen973  Před 3 lety +1

      have your home computer dual boot linux and windows to justify more keyboards!

    What strikes me is that the amount of switches commonly availeable in the market has increased a lot in the last 3 to 4 years. And with the majority of new switches beeing MX contact based designs, there has been an influx in new designs like the gateron optical. I for one own a varmillo with their electro capacitive EC switches.
    In theory optical or electro capacitive should be the "better switch design" especially if you want smoothness. But from what ive seen the smoothest linear switches still are traditional MX designs (Mauve, Alpaca, H1, Tangerines, zealios). So for the moment i still agree, that i would rather choose a PCB that supports the traditional MX designs, rather then a PCB that supports propriotary designs, like the Varmillo or the gateron opticals. Maybe in the future they will at some place be undoubetly "better" and they replace MX designs, but doesnt seem like it at the moment. I really like my varmillo and the switches are "good" but i still think theres something missing and i want to try thokier sounding switches. Something i cannot do with the varmillo, as it has a propreitary pcb.

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  Před 3 lety

      For sure! I think the majority of new switches are MX-based because that's what most people use today, and optical switches don't seem to be a good-enough improvement for folks to move over. It's pretty hard to break the inertia of an MX-switch dominate market.

    Just backed the 89 USD tier and I urge people to do the same too. I don't see any reason for someone to get the Barebones or full alu kit. They felt like a total rip off.
    Although I wonder, why someone would choose this over Keycool kc84? Mac and extra 1300 mah battery ?

    • @blancneige4952
      @blancneige4952 Před 3 lety

      Keycool kc84 has abysmal reviews on its wireless capability (connectivity/range/speed) when 2.4GHz is supposed to be better. AK84's BT5.1 means its not Mac compatible but for any other (modern) device, like your smartphone, whereas kc84's 2.4GHz means you need an USB dongle to connect, limiting you to Windows PC or getting a USB C to A to use it. kc84 is also of entirely of plastic instead of AK84's alu top/frame and ABS bottom (which arguably may be better for sound, reducing ping). kc84 has extremely limited and confusing programmability, not localized.AK84 also has optical switch option, and with two sets of keycaps, this is quite the deal.

    • @SamBoga
      @SamBoga Před 3 lety

      @@blancneige4952 surprisingly , KC84 has a wired only and BT version (5.0) probably. KC84 has an English software afaik which has also been ported to epomaker EP84 as well.
      Well I have ordered the KC84 as well. Gotta compare both of them.

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  Před 3 lety +1

      BT5.1 is backwards compatible with BT5.0, so should be fine on Macs
