      The price/performance curve seems to flatten out at around $100. Yes, there are niche formulations and exotic accords way above that price level, but you pretty much have to factor economies of scale into the price of something with intrinsically niche appeal. There are plenty of fragrances to be had for under $30 that will have you the best smelling guy in pretty much any room.

Fragrances should be tagged with price point at which everyone can enjoy and also people can buy them again again rather purchasing them once (most people won’t go for buying 300/400 dollars fragrances again and again, that is almost impossible, unless they are millionaires and celebrities (although I hardly see even top business class people wearing Chanel or similar brands).

      I was initially firmly in this camp as well, but I changed my mind pretty quickly. I found myself moving on from designer fragrances after wearing them only a few times. Not exactly getting sick of them, because I still think they smell nice. I would find myself having trouble deciding what to wear because nothing was particularly appealing. They just didn't speak to me. With my higher-end/niche fragrances, I have the opposite problem. I have trouble deciding on only one perfume because I want to wear them all every day. I usually end up wearing 3 or 4 perfumes throughout the day because I want to smell them all constantly. I'd rather spend $400 for one or two fragrances I absolutely adore than 6 or 8 that I only kind of like. Of course, there are some exceptions for really phenomenal designer releases, and everybody's taste is different. This is just my personal experience.

    The fragrance snobs will most always give argument on whats best, quality of materials yada yada. Personally, niche frags are a money grab, supported by the social media platforms that most assuredly have something to do with the escalated pricing
    Although I have quite a few “niche” frags, most of my compliments come from designers. In fact, I get more compliments from 25-50 dollar frags than my niche. Its a game, a game at which the Perfumers sit back and laugh at the lunacy by which people will shell out mega bucks for A frag that cost a mere bag of shells to produce
    The frag industry has done nothing in years other than produce clones, or scents the are very similar to others. Sadly, I dont see that changing

    • @TheAmosuno
      @TheAmosuno Před 3 lety

      I agree that only fragrance snobs speaks to quality of ingredients and all that jazz. While I wear them for myself and not to annoy those around me, it's not a coincidence that the ones I get the most notice from are my cheap throwaway fragrances.

    • @grey7987
      @grey7987 Před 3 lety +1

      Indie perfume houses have done some great things in recent years, and I think a few niche houses have as well. But if compliments are what you are after, then of course designers are the way to go. The fragrances are almost paint-by-numbers creations because they know what sells and what people like, and that is also why they all blur together over time. It's also what people are used to, and what they will often have memories associated with. For my own enjoyment, though, I'd rather pay the money. I have a few great designers, but most of them fall flat for me, especially after smelling them a few times. To be fair, I've also sampled many niche perfumes I felt the same way about. At the end of the day, though, I've found more expensive perfumes that I enjoy long-term than I have cheapies.
