Ted sounds about like me negotiating. I sold a lawn mower recently, listed it for $500 told myself I wouldn't take less than 300. A guy showed up and I talked him down, we met right smack down in the middle at $100 😂
I mean, no one’s surprised that Tommy bought a rusty train wreck of a car.
It's not that bad really. I've certainly seen worse than that restored...
It would be cool to see you try restoring this car.

I owned a 67 404 sedan with four on the tree. Great car! It had a rusty floor in Southern California! Very reliable. Couple issues. The idle jet would get clogged once in a while. I carried a little wrench and some carb cleaner to clean it out when it began to stall. The transmission shift linkage would get jammed between gears when someone drove it forced it into gear. It was sensitive to the ignition points wearing out so I always kept a spare set of points. Don’t need a timing light to set the timing either. Just need a pin to slide into a hole in the top of the bell housing and into a hole on the flywheel then uses a test light to set the timing. Very simple. The 404 also could be hand cranked to start it. Note the hole in the middle of the front bumper. I miss that car!

I really like the Pininfarina design that Peugeot 404 got, as well as its design cousins within BMC (Austin A55 Cambridge Mk II, MG Magnette Mk III, Morris Oxford V, Riley 4/68, Wolseley 15/60) etc.
What does a mechanic connected to the Stellantis network say if you bring a Peugeot in?
I look forward to watching you replace all the rocker panels with new metal. That corrugated design will be fun to replicate.
That's quite the project car, it's something you can put 10's of thousands into and sell it for ten's of dollars...
There are still tons of the truck versions being used in Africa today.
I laugh when you even suggest reliability considering you suggest reliability with stellantis, but it's very cool.
Thanks Tommy, watching the video brought me back great memories. When I was a kid during the 70s My parents had a red Peugeot 404 Sedan, in the late 80s we had a 404 diesel pickup. They also had a 403 sedan, a 403 pickup, two 504 sedan, a 504 diesel pickup and a 205. I started driving in the 403 pickup.

I have a PEUGEOT 404 sedan from 1974 in Cuba, made in Argentina the best car forever, i live since a few years in United States and by this reason i miss my 404 to much...
We share the same interests in dream cars. I grew up in 60s-70s Haiti, where these cars were everywhere. Especially in diesel form. I remember my grandfather getting a new 404 Familiale or Break in 1971, and him making everyone totally dry off before getting back in the wagon. We had been at the beach. It was a baby blue manual transmission diesel model.

Believe it or not I’m absolutely jealous of your car!!! My very first car was the father of your 404. It was the same body style but was a 1960 403 wagon. My dad bought it for me when I was a junior in high school. The poor car already had over 260,000 miles on the odometer. It was a fantastic car and was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned in my life. Now I’m 74 and before I go to French car heaven, I’m still trying to find almost any model Peugeot up and including a 504!!! If nothing else I can look for great videos like yours and think it’s me getting a great deal on the best automobile ever made! Thanks, I’m now a new subscriber.
This car is one of those loved by Africa. The 404 was manufactured until 1991 in Kenya

Just one thing, Peugeot is pronounced "PE-JO" (the E sounds like "a" when you say "a thing" for instance) not Poojo :)
I hope you enjoy this car! I had a 505 wagon years ago. I loved its comfort and utility. It could fit a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood in the back with the seats folded down.

A buddy of mines dad has a few Peugeot 505 cars and i think they look fantastic. Not very fast but teds not wrong when he mentioned he knows nothing about them cuz they never needed work lol they last a good amount of time. Good come up on your car man

I had a 404 sedan and a 504 sedan. Great cars...except for the rust. You could put your hand right in my 504's trunk due to the gaping hole and this was a 100% California car. Nonetheless, I loved it. I'm excited to see the 404 content!

This is one off my favorite cars of all time! You would need to buy part for it from middle east where they are dirt cheap. And off course 504 is the best ever Peugeot.
I learned to drive on a Peugeot 404 wagon, column shift and no power steering. If I recall, they were about $2,500 new. There can’t be too many of them in the US.
Single barrel solex? Those things were thrown on the jeeps after the Normandy landing on D-day. Also that license plate.

A French immigrant to Canada told me about African roads and cars. It agreed with what you said about 505. The roads are not what you expect. One could be driving along a nice piece of bitumen and all of a sudden there'd be a huge car swallowing dip. There'd be no signs as everyone knew this is how the road was and probably wouldn't be "fixed" .

Never thought of French as master car manufacturers: Peugeot, Citroen, Renault.
I had several 404s 1969, 1973 and 1974. All saloons and petrol. They don't die. Except for rust.
I love the 404s,i got a 404 ute and and sort of a 404 car
those old Peugeots are great,, as a student mechanic I work a lot on them , only rust demolise them

must be 'bullet proof'!
I own 2 Pugs right now. And as the guy said to be nice they always need EVERYTHING, but they will just run without question. The older ones like the 404 here have rust issues, but which car of the 60's doesn't? But in the 80's and 90's I don't think anyone had better rust proofing than Peugeot, both my cars have been driven through winters, one for 30 and the other for 26 years, and they barely have any rust.
But the comfort and smoothness of the ride is just unmatched, a base model economy Peugeot from the 90's is more comfortable than a brand new luxury car from Germany.
I love this car, this is also my favorite old car (I live in France)
If you want to offroad a Peugeot, you'd better go with the Dangel versions of the 504 or 505

I daily a 1963 Plymouth Savoy with a 3 on the tree. It can be a bear but it is always fun.
The 404 is a nicely gracefully styled car. In the front. The rear end, not so much. I suspect you could find and source replacement rocker panels and lower patch panels for the rusted out sections of the car. I suspect you have a decent score for a long term project car.
The 404 pickup is still used a lot in Benin, west Africa. Also the 504 and 505 are quote common there. If you like old cars in "runningish" condition, Benin is the country for you.
The USA has always been stupid about great cars.
404 and 504 are brilliant cars. Tough, reliable, durable, great steering, brakes, suspension. They cruised very well.
I actually like this body design more than the other one you wanted.
Would be a nice restoration project, old peugeot's are still popular in Europe. So I'm pretty sure most body part are still available
My arts and film teacher in high school had a Citroën. We would go on field trips at times in it...forced my friends to ride with my mom (parent volunteer), just so I could get a ride on...hmm..in the magic carpet ride.
That's what I call "armstrong steering". My first car was a 1973 Datsun 610 wagon. No power anything, steering & brakes, crank windows. We've come a long way in automotive tech, that's for sure.
The reason why Peugeot and Renault were chased out of the North American Market in 1986 is because their cars would breakdown (transmissions and engines) between 35k and 50k miles. There were several class action lawsuits. Renault claimed in 2018 that they were going to make a return to the North American Market, but have yet to submit any vehicles for highway safety testing.

Ted, Owner of, and Servant to, Ax and Allies, is an incredible mechanic, not the worst dude I've met, and makes a funny now and again. If you have an old British car with neverending issues, go park it at Ted's for a while!

Always wanted a 404 and almost bought one in Melbourne Australia in 1977, but it had a bottom end knock. Probably run without oil at some point. My Dad had three 504's in the 1970's starting with a 1971, 73, and 76, with each successive one the build quality got worse, but still a very good car. Have you found 4th gear yet?

Had a good few peugeots down through the years, great solid diesel engines. Electrics in damper climates could be dodgy. You should look out for a petrol 405 mi16.

My all time favourite car is a RHD Burgundy Peugeot 404 with beige interior with 3 circular meters(early 70s model), low mileage. Would you believe there is one in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad & Tobago. Mileage is 34000 miles, so low for a 50 year old car. The car is in superb condition. Price tag £40,000/- so I am waiting to win the lottery.
