My current set up is a 372 grain arrow, 24.5% FOC, going 310 fps, using a swat 4 blade mechanical, and I penetrated through the spine of a whitetail. I think the main focus should be FOC. The only concern I have with mechanical are the ones that open on impact. My current one are like a swhacker, which open after penetration. Also, there are mechanicals with cut on contact tips. Majority of yall have gotten your information from the eye doctor study. While it is a good starting point and works, remember, he used wooden recurve bows. His bow speeds are unmatched to today's compounds. Also, his study done on light arrows (400 grains) the FOC was way lower than his heavy 650+ set ups. All he increased was tip weight because that's all he could do. Today with our carbon shafts, I can build an arrow 400 grains, with 30% FOC. Just something to think about.

He bareshaft tuned, nocked tune and broadhead tune. His arrows was flying perfect and hit the target straight on. It still didn't pass all the way through. Then my arrow, 372 grains with a mechanical penetrated the same. Let's not forget that Josh bowmar and Levi Morgan killed two of the biggest brown bears with a a mechanical, and their is footage of it.
@@theincredible9168 bow hunter for 32 years. Mechanicals take kinetic energy to open which affect penetration. And if the blades don't open in unison ( depending on the type) the arrows energy is no longer center of gravity and the force is sideways once again affecting penetration. I shoot fixed with a bow and mechanical with crossbow because energy isn't a concern

@@robyarroch5712 I have to disagree with you, I have taken bull moose with Grimm Reaper mechanical broad heads. They don't make it 20-30 yards. All I know is don't use Rage broad heads the angle of the blades are not tilted back enough, they cause to much resistance that they malfunction. But to end things off it's whatever you prefer! There are guys that make there own arrows and broad heads that are successful.

I bugled in an elk for about an hour and when it got in it was a 7x7 that was much bigger than this elk and I got buck fever and missed with a muzzleloader… still keeps me up at night

I am not a bow hunter but it looks like the shot was taken from a long way off or it didn't have much behind it, I am not sure if you can tell me I would appreciate it
I use vintage recurves from the 50s and 60s with carbon arrows and vintage bear razor head , even with my 45 lb. Bow I can punch both lungs, have to keep your broad heads sharp for clean kill, the old bears are tough and can get razor sharp
People gotta stop posting videos like this, we already get a bad enough rep being “hunters” then people go and post a questionable kill like this makes it even tougher on us
Really on the fence on whether bow hunting Elk is even ethical. Seen way too many videos and heard way too many stories of elk being hit and not recovered. Just don't like it. This looks like a non-recovered animal. Might have been recovered, but sure looks like just an injury.

That arrow is in 50%. That will work. Despite what celebrity hunters say, you don’t need a full pass through the animal to kill it.

The arrow was traveling slow enough that you could watch the elk “jump the string” with out even slowing the video down. Could be a traditional rig?
No it was a compound. 70lbs. It does appear to be moving slow though for whatever reason. Could be the distance or camera angle.

It was a pretty far shot, elk are big thick animals. The arrow got clear into the vitals and he was recovered quickly.

That isn't always the right answer. They seem to be shooting low poundage, and a heavier arrow would slow it down a lot. Not the best idea.
