New Zealand Flag Referendum Explained

  • A brief explanation of the New Zealand flag referendum.
    New Zealand's flag is very similar to Australia's flag, and features a Union Jack as a canton, despite the fact that it has been a fully independent country for nearly 70 years. For these reasons, many people feel that changing the flag would be appropriate.
    First, flags were submitted by the public, with over 10,000 entries. The flag committee then narrowed these time to a finally 4. A 5th option was later added due to a petition.
    A referendum between these 5 flags was held during November and December 2015. The winner of this referendum will go head-to-head with the current New Zealand flag in the 2nd referendum in March 2016.

If and when that happens, that’s when we will likely see a nation like New Zealand get a new flag. Considering how close the vote was, it’s probably not that far away.

      @ikeknights Před 8 lety +14

      +Schindlabua Holding elections or referendums is expensive. You have to advertise, hire people to run the referendum, perhaps rent the polling places. And there are plenty of things I can't even think of. That's just the price of democracy. On a whole, 25 million is chump change to a government. NZ's 2015 budget was 74.9 billion, so this referendum is .3% of their budget. They just look under their seat cushions to find it.

    • @Schindlabua
      @Schindlabua Před 8 lety +3

      ikeknights Haha yes, this was more of a stab at overly huge bureaucratic apparatuses in general. I've been looking at the most recent elections here in Vienna and it appears we had 1.499 polling places, which is honestly more than I expected, but considering that NZ is 2.5 times Vienna and that on the countryside you probably don't need to rent anything at all, that doesn't warrant a budget like that. I understand that that's just how it goes and that 25 million isn't a whole lot for a government, but in my mind it really shouldn't be _that_ expensive.

    • @ikeknights
      @ikeknights Před 8 lety +5

      Schindlabua I agree it shouldn't be expensive. If I had it my way, here in the US, I would require TV and radio to turn over a percentage of the airwaves to distribute evenly among candidates, so no money had to be spent. In America, the public owns the airwaves, so we have a right to ask for free airtime that benefits the country as a whole. Cable and internet is a different issue as who owns the broadband, but we do own the airwaves.

It shows that the country has a glorious and special history in rugby. But then taking that symbol and applying it to the national flag takes something away from both national symbols.

      Either way, it's because New Zealand is rather isolated and was almost all British people, the UK has become very mixed with European DNA such as Scandinavian, Iberian, French and Italian. Also a lot of Asian people from India and Pakistan.

      +JustinBobcat being a Citizen of New Zealand, and a permanent resident of Australia, I can safely say the Aussies couldn't organize an punch up in a saloon. Besides the New Zealand flag actually predates the Oz one anyway, it could be argued we Aussies should change ours - rather than the other way around.
      The Issue for me is that the New Zealand flag was once a British Military Ensign, which was later adopted as the flag of the nation; for this and other reasons, including a certain Maori's penchant for chopping down flag poles as a sign of protest, I think NZ has more reason than any nation to remove the Union Jack.
      Besides, the Canadian Flag no longer has a Union Jack and they are quite happily and staunchly monarchistic. (Well a lot of them are anyway.)
      FWIW, there is also another island in the Pacific that has the Union Jack on it's flag - well State Flag anyway - and that is Hawaii.
      Maybe you should ask them sometime about why they still have the Union Jack on their flag?!

    • @LyricalDJ
      @LyricalDJ Před 5 lety +16

      On the other hand.. whenever I see a maple leaf, I think of Canada. And I've never been to Canada (although family of mine live there). That, and while there are plenty of red-and-white flags, I can't recall having seen one which I'd confuse with Canada's, because of the maple leaf. ;o)
      To comment on the New Zealand flags (and yes, I know the referenda are all over and done): I like the black, personally. A lot more than the blue used in the flag that won the first referendum. Also, kind of surprised there were no designs combining the fern and the koru shapes. Or, say, a mountain/wave shape.
      But heck, what would actually be a nice-looking design that's also easily distinguisable and useable as a flag? It would also have to not be too far-fetched. The mountain design, for example, while okay makes me think of a tourist or camping organisation. Especially with the three colours used that way. But you could put that in the canton, maybe. Or add in more colours or distinguishable bits in a different way. On the other hand, putting all or too many of the designs in would be messy..
      I think I'd start with the colours. So, maybe black, white and green? Or black, white and blue? Then maybe look at how you want to divide the flag if you want to go a more traditional route, or a larger symbol then see if you can add a canton or some such.
      But in the end, as much fun as it is to think about I'll have to agree with the New Zealanders saying that, really, how big of an issue is this anyway? And how on earth could this cost so much money?

It was obviously a distraction from our major mental health, horrendous drug/assault rates and housing crisis. The flags were fucking hideous that were elected and shortly after this referendum actually John Key bailed while he could and the National party replaced him which got voted out again in favor of Labour because we want less fucking suicides and to live in a house that someone owns instead of paying rent for our entire lives not a token Maori flag design.
      Seeing anything to do with this flag shit makes me cringe especially the token white people designed Maori flags and the asymmetrical hideous, random thrown colour palette ones. This referendum was a disgrace. The real sad shit is that the original "un unique" flag actually represents a lot of history and means a lot to the ANZAC descendants as a mark of history and sacrifice from my grandfather. The Gallipoli campaign was a slaughter for the allied forces. Changing the flag now is shitting all over the sacrifices made for the nations liberty to begin with.
      How would you feel if they suddenly tried to change your countries flag to a fucking kiwi or fern for no reason other than "It will attract more tourists", "We'll get our 5 seconds of fame from the big countries" and the fucking worst justification ever "It looks to similar too Australias."

    When people know what their new flag would be when voting for the new one, then their could be no complaints afterwards. Imagine people made the descision to change the flag first, but once they vote on the actual design, it turns out to displease a majority of pro-change voters: Drama would be big. That way everyone who voted yes actually knew what they were voting for =3 They were voting for an alternative ("The silver farne on our flag"), and not an idea ("Change our flag to ?!?!?").

    Hi everyone, I'm from NZ and I thought I'd chuck up my views on this and some random info.
    I voted for Red Peak and I will be voting for the current flag.
    Why? Vexililogical value! None of the other flags really had any. (Personally I'm just glad that the red/white/blue fern is gone, but the other copy of Papua New Guinea's flag has been chosen instead, so I'm still voting against change in the referendum.
    Something a lot of people here talked about after it was too late was the issue of giving old people the vote (something I am against for a flag vote for many reasons) and parents giving their vote to their children. Another issue with this is the key issue with democratic processing: everyone can vote... based on their age. It didn't matter how much design experience one has. Speaking of which, the committee contained zero designers which was a piss-poor decision in my eyes.
    The other thing I should mention was the original referendum for flag change which was ignored in the end anyway. 70% of voters were in opposition to the flag. My bet is that now that there is a winner of the first referendum, the people that didn't vote for the RBW fern flag are likely just going to vote against it anyway sort of making this look like an egg on Key's face... that twat.

      +Kalin Soden Because nobody cares about vexililogical value. Why would we? We want a symbol to represent NZ, something we can take pride in. Not something we need a short essay to explain, that looks ugly as shit despite it's technical appeal.

      Hi Kalin. I'm from Australia and this is just my opinion.
      I would have voted for Red Peak too. I currently study a design related degree and I think the Red Peak has the most design thought behind it.
      That being said, I am still holding onto hope that Kiwis vote to change the flag, even though I am not the biggest fan of the flag that has been chosen as an alternative. For me it is not so much a matter of design as it is about the principle of having the Union Jack in the canton of the flag. Consider what that symbolises and what that communicates to others. In the end a flag is supposed to be a representation of a nation to other nations.
      I know this opens up a can of worms... becoming a republic and ridding of our ties with the UK... but in the end I just simply do not identify with the Union Jack and could never vote to keep it.
      I hope New Zealand changes its flag so we can do so here too.

      It was all propaganda, to cover up the union jack flag and their assumption that their flag holds or heralds any jurisdiction in Nz since the so called lowering of the United tribes flag and the raising of the Union Jack in 1840 not long after the ToW was signed.

      +Kenneth Woodard "His" topics and animations, seriously? Yes, I'm aware he talks about topic on his podcast, which I do listen to, by the way. That said, I was interested in this topic a long time ago, possibly before he talked about it on the podcast, I'm not really sure. Check my Twitter, I tweeted about this way back on September 1st. I'm very interested in vexillology and a major country having a referendum to change its flag is something very interesting to me.
      And even if I did get the idea of the topic from him... like he always says: "nobody owns the facts". He's certainly not going to make a video on this topic. He NEVER talks about something if he's even considering doing a video about it.
      And with regards to animations... I honestly don't even know what you're talking about. I made all the animations myself from scratch. Which was very tedious and not easy at all. The only thing I can think of, is you're likening my explanation of preferential voting to his video on the topic. I honestly don't know how else one would be able to present that information.
      So I'm sorry but I'm going to have to throw the "not cool, dude" back at you. Pretty unfair comment in my opinion.
