Just to clarify, the cropping occurs only when the E-Stabilization is switched on. That wasn't made clear in the video. Thanks to everyone who let me know!

Wow, you are getting good with your newish 100-300mm lens. Love the woodpecker shots. I have yet to take out my own brand new lens but you are very much inspiring me. I think I'll be hooking up my G9 with my monopod when I do. As always, thanks for the clear, concise tutorials!
Hello again Steven. Great to hear this is inspiring you. Start simple. Start in your own backyard or nearby park. Or go out shooting with a friend. On cold days when I'm testing out camera settings, I shoot through an open window pointed at my bird bath, bird feeder or the nearby trees. Whatever motivates you. You got this!

Even though i’ve been using the G9 for what must be three plus years now I still find your videos to be very helpful and a great reference for the G9’s expanse of functionality and features. I also find it very helpful knowing this is how you use the G9 for your wonderful work, it just adds value and inspires confidence to use the features more often myself. Hi Andrew, Great to hear from you again. I'm happy to hear that you're planning to shoot some video with your G9. For starters you can use P Mode in video. Or you can just push the red video button and see what happens. Sometimes that's all I do, especially when I'm too excited to think about camera settings, or if it's cold outside like today at -25C. Yes I'm going out shooting today! Yikes.

Having just taken my new G9 and 100-400mm lens out for the first time yesterday, this tip was well timed. I had a great experience with the animal detect feature photographing a great blue heron behind two rows of reeds on a dead log with lots of dead branches. I could have manually focused but any other autofocus mode would not work so I decided to see what the animal detect could do. It was a very difficult test but the G9 nailed the focus about 30% of the time. With birds in flight my keeper rate is nearing 80%. I need to check your other videos to see about cancelling the animal detect feature in the PASM modes but I want to continue to use it in custom function settings with the center square focus. I'm a very happy camper right out of the box with the G9 but I know I still have much to learn about the camera. By the way, I enjoyed seeing your photos. Birds in my neighborhood seem more shy than the ones you've photographed.
Wow Bruce, If you can successfully capture birds in flight, you're well on your way! For birds hidden in reeds and branches, you might want to set up your G9's front two buttons for AF-On Near and AF-On Far. This feature was released in the firmware update 2.0. You'll find the details of that update at the back of the advanced G9 owner's manual. Oops that was a typo! Sorry about that! I will correct it right now. We have a province in Canada called British Columbia, so I'm used to typing it that way.
Great video and tips on Lumix stabilization Marlene. I shoot all my video using the Dual IS2 (IBIS), and through the EVF. Shooting through the G9's large EVF is helpfull in various outdoor lighting conditions for accurate exposure and focus for photo and while recording 4K video. And I use the E stabilization using a tripod for added stabilization while panning or following shots 300mm+.
This smooths out the vibraion from the hands on camera while panning/tilting/zooming. Nevertheless, I'll have to give the other Stabilization option a try (hand with arrows pointing both ways).
I'm constantly looking for better ways to use my G9 camera. It's a challenge that I enjoy. I am always interested in learning from other people's techniques. Thanks for sharing yours!

I love your videos! You have just about convinced me get the G9. Does the G9 have something comparable to Oly's Live view composite? Thanks and keep doing the videos!
Hi Dan, Glad you like the videos. As far as the Lumix G9 goes, it has in-camera Multiple Exposure (up to 4 images), and a 4K/6K Photo feature called Light Composition where you can superimpose frames taken at night. I find that one extremely klunky to use. They also have a feature for stop motion video where you can see the previous frame as a ghost image. Not sure what you're looking for, but this is all I know of in terms of composites.

Thanks for another great video, most instructive. One thing I was hoping you would cover - when my G9 is set up, with photo stabilisation on, the '((duel))2' symbol on the touch screen disappears when I half-press the shutter and it is replaced by a camera symbol coloured red. Do I have an incorrect setting or is this perfectly normal? Cannot find any reference to this in the manual or online.

Hi Peter. Pages 145 yo 148 of the pdf camera manual has all the different scenario for stabilization. Check all of the footnotes too.
Marlene, do you have any videos on using digital teleconverters or zoom magnification using the G9? At first glance, this feature on the G9 is not as intuitive as it is in the Lumix FZ1000 but it seems like a useful feature especially for a hobby like bird photography.
Hi Bruce, Yes I have a video on that topic. czcams.com/video/aa3VL9Hf_yc/video.html I find these tools are more suitable for video. With photos you can crop in editing if you have a good, sharp, well-exposed original. Final thoughts, use with caution, especially the digital zoom.

I don't know if this is anything like I-Zoom on the FZ1000 and its Leica cousin, the V-Lux 5, but I found I-Zoom really helped make those cameras better at reaching out for birding photography. I was surprised to see it as an option in the G9 but the manual is confusing on this topic. Your videos have been very helpful and I'm sure I have a great deal to learn about, what is for me, a new camera.
Sounds like you are well on your way to learning the G9. If you're used to Lumix cameras you'll figure it all out in no time. A birding friend of mine uses the FZ1000ii and she occasionally uses the iZoom. Next time I'm out birding with her, I'll check it out for myself. Yes the camera manual is quite cryptic, but that gives me lots of topics for videos. Thanks for watching and enjoy your new camera.

wearer, I always find I need to take mine off (progressives) to properly use the viewfinder.
I noticed you keep your glasses on while using the camera. Any tips on how you manage
the extra optics we put on our heads? These quick tip videos are great!
Hmm, I've been wearing glasses for 40 years (progressives for 10) so I think it's automatic at this point. I do have issues with my sunglasses though, as they are polarized so it's sometimes harder to see the LCD at certain angles to the sunlight. But regular glasses are no problem.

Hi Marlene. I want to point out that E-stabilization has nothing to do with the lens or dual i.s. It’s digital stabilization, meaning a slight crop. Similar to what stabilizer in for example Davinci Resolve does.

I am new to g9. Not findind is it possible to turn of IS in camera body when lens also have IS and its on? I would like to use only lens IS. It seems to, lens without IS(45mm 1.8 oly) have better sharpness than my leica 200mm, perhaps I must learn camera settings.
Also I noticed that dual IS changes to camera body stabilisation when aperture is reduced, it should be so?
Yes, because if you close the aperture, you need a slower shutter speed, and that sometimes requires stabilization.
I think there are 2 small Mistakes in the video:
1:34 E-Stabilization has nothing to do with dual stabilization in lens and body. Panasonic always uses dual stabilization if possible. You can't switch lens stabilization off. The switch on the lens or the camera turns the whole stabilization on and off. E-Stabilization is the electronic stabilization on top of optical and this comes with a small crop.
3:53 You say the optical stabilization does crop the image. That's not the case. The crop comes from the E-stabilization. Without E-stabilization, there is not crop.
I recommend to check videos with and without E-stabilization. It adds some more stabilization but to me it looks a bit unnatural. I typically don't use it.
I also recommend to use IS-Lock only in the cases where you really want the result look like fixed on a tripod. The IBIS tries to keep the image in position until the range of the sensor-movement is reached and then it jumps. This can happen very easy with long lenses and usually it looks more natural when the image is not perfectly stable and moves slowly and follows your movements in a damped way. I use IS-lock with wider lenses in cases like landscape for a couple of seconds.
