Turns out after posting this video, the owner of this truck, which Nokian rented on Turo is upset. We borrowed this truck from Nokian as one of many vehicles they had for media / dealers to drive during the event. We used this truck to make this video with the understanding the owner who hosted the truck on Turo knew exactly what the truck was being used for.
I’ve forwarded all concerns to the Nokian team and they’re in communication with the owner - we’ll see what happens
From the owners perspective, totally understand the frustration if they truly didn’t know what the truck was being used for.
Nokian tells me they were transparent so I’m not sure where to stand on this. At the end of the day, the truck wasn’t damaged by sliding around on the snow.
If I had known the owner didn’t approve this style of driving then of course we wouldn’t have used the vehicle. Hope that in the end it all works out and the owner is happy and Nokian and them come to some sort of agreement.
Will update in a future video on my channel - this is why I personally hate the idea of Turo!
That's a really nice reply. Nokian told the owner it was getting new tires and they'd be tested, and they could keep the tires. However, turo terms of service don't allow multiple drivers without adding them to the contract. They also don't allow vehicles to be used off paved roads.
You did a great job testing the vehicle, but seriously, that's hard on it, and nobody's compensating the owner for how it was used. The owners (rightfully) upset about how you used the truck. You weren't even on the rental contract, and nokian isn't allowed to sublet the rental contract to you.
Great Video, and I’m sure there were no bad intentions at all. Doesn’t seem like an Out of Spec issue if Nokian rented and lent the truck to them, but it also didn’t seem like the driving would do any harm to a vehicle!
that's pretty shady of Nokian to do that. why would you used a personal vehicle for demo drives at a corporate event?

Agreed big time. I know this channel does mostly run and gun style production but all of the fun in this video was totally lost without a single exterior shot.
He's been trying to make money quickly. The production value and content quality have suffered in recent months as the amount of videos produced in short succession has gone up. I like Kyle but haven't watched many of his videos all the way through lately anymore.
@@ulfw I’ve noticed the same, for example this videos audio and footage were definitely not up to par since all they do is use the camera and mic on an iPhone

I love my Lightning and good to know to has this capability in the snow although I probably won’t be in the snow much if at all.
F150 lighting on studs would be sick with those high speed skids. I wouldn’t consider this a fair handling comparison.
Kyle, in Drift mode, I'm thinking the R1T rear motors are biased as that is what you would want for drifting. So no, it's not compensating back-to-front wheel motors.
The more affordable Outlander PHEV might do well in the snow too.
What are your thoughts on the Rivian Underbody Shield? Worth it? Not going to rock crawl my R1S

I doubt its a true brake by wire? You mean decoupled pedal instead of traditional booster & hydraulic pedal coupling.
That was actually 1:03 quicker in the Rivian, not that it really matters on the times.

I was also at this event and I can tell you, none of the vehicles were "abused" in any way. The sliding around a snow and ice course does nothing to any drivetrain components in the EV's. The Audi Q5's and the Chevy Equinox's were also not abused and only did what the tires and conditions allowed the vehicles to do. If anything happened after I left, I cannot attest to but, I didnt see or perform any maneuver that would justify an outrage.
You have my full permission to similarly 'abuse' my R1S once you get my free Nokians!

It was a Nokian event - did they have pro drivers there to compare the vehicles and tires?
If so, was there a timed course and what were the vehicle times (same driver, same tires)?
The two minutes of driving including stop-n-go was meaningless (90% driver error in the F-150.)
As for handling, looking at the driver inputs and the scenery through the windshield, the Rivian was clearly more responsive and in control.
That Rivian hasn't written software for uncontrolled, low speed sideways sliding beyond drift mode in dirt, is 90% irrelevant.

Locking diff will exacerbate understeer.
Locking diff is only in the ford and it's the rear diff so it will exacerbate oversteer
A locking diff in a vehicle with near 50/50 weight distribution will almost always lead to greater oversteer.
@@ctuan13 Weight distribution has nothing to do with it. Look up why differentials exist in the first place.
@@usa-ev I'm well aware of why differentials exist. But in terms of over vs understeer, you actually want the opposite effect of an open diff.
On a slippery surface, an open diff will lead to the wheel with the least traction spinning, while the other wheel does almost nothing. If this is the rear wheels, this means very little oversteer.
However if the diff is either limited-slip or locked, both wheels will act upon the ground with the same torque regardless of traction, and this means that even the wheel with more solid grip can be over powered to the point of breaking free. If the rear breaks free and there is enough lateral energy, boom: oversteer.
Although weight plays a definite role, a bigger factor is the front wheels being powered. In driving mechanics, it's generally understood that tires only like to do one thing at a time, at least effectively. So a wheel can brake effectively, it can steer effectively and it can transmit power to the ground effectively. But throw in more than one at a time and things start to break down.
This is why front wheel drive cars are so prone to understeer and plowing into corners. The front wheels are attempting to transmit power and provide turning force at the same time all while all the weight is on them. Once they break free, they can no longer transmit turning force and the car understeer.
If the lightning really did experience more understeer (we can't be sure since this video was filmed from inside the vehicles) then its likely caused by the Lightning's programming that slightly biases power to the front wheels, even in sport mode. If there was a mode that could do the opposite, it would turn into even more of a drift machine.

Dude, you rented these cars from people, not companies. You abused them pretty bad, and you really need to make it right with the people you got them from. Would you do this with your own car, the Rockford turns specifically? Come on man. U really don't need to be messing with people like that.

@@patricktabis382 they rented this on turo. The owner was informed they'd be getting new tires on the lightning, not that they were going to go abuse it on the ice. It's like Airbnb for cars.

Rivian had so much potential. But I fear they have seen their last days. Ford pulled out and I think Amazon is their last BIG investor I believe. I always said those two front ovals looked just like the giant Oval grill on the Ford Edsel. Seems it will end up with the same fate. IMO Elon would be smart to buy them out and make the Rivian right long term as part of Tesla.
