So happy to see so many of you enjoyed the experience as much as we did. The whole factory tour was a lot more in-depth than we ever anticipated. We feel like we have a from-the-ground-up understanding of the day-to-day equipment we will trust to take us around the world on our sailboat safely. Hopefully, you do too!
If you find yourselves in Havant, England stop into the Lewmar showroom and tell them we said hi. Or, if you can’t make it there and have questions or feedback on anything Lewmar, they want to hear from you! You can find all their contact and product information on their website here: lci.ink/Wynn

You probably noticed the age of some of the employees, there was a time in America when lifetime employees had great pride in their work and company, however when you fire or retire people early, the younger generation no longer has the devotion to a company nor expects to retire there.

That was a great video. I used to work for Lewmar. I ran the Lewmar Marine division that operated in Canada. Our office/warehouse/rigging shop facility was just west of Toronto. Our neighbours were C&C Yachts and host of others. Lewmar owned Navtec (rod rigging and hydraulics) in those days (mid 1980s to early 1990s). We built rigs, repaired and serviced Navtec Hydraulics. I built some rigs for very large boats - 12m Class etc. I also sold and serviced Lewmar products to some very large catamarans such as TAG (became ENZA). TAG was almost 100ft and was sailed solo. It was built by Bombardier in Montreal. I used to travel to Havant several times a year. The winch factory was the first fully automated sailboat hardware facility in the world. Lots of great products were designed there and and manufactured by a staff who were (and still are) totally focussed on the best possible products and service for their clients. I’m glad you’ve chosen Lewmar as a supplier for your new boat. You will not be disappointed!!

The original castle was built in the 11th century, however during the two centuries after, Henry III built a luxurious royal palace within the castle during the middle of the century, and Edward III went further, rebuilding the palace to make an even grander set of buildings in what would become "the most expensive secular building project of the entire Middle Ages in England. After surviving the English civil war period, Charles II rebuilt much of Windsor Castle with the help of the architect Hugh May. After a period of neglect during the 18th century, George III and George IV renovated and rebuilt Charles II's palace at colossal expense, producing the current design of the state apartments.

That was actually a ton more interesting than I expected! Thanks for including us in your tour. I watch a few narrowboat channels as well, and just tonight I watched one from a bit over a year ago and have to post a note for you to be on the lookout for a bit of kitchen equipment. I've never heard of it before, but it must be a thing in UK as she talked about it like it was a normal thing. Something called a Thermal cooker? you heat it up on the stove top with your food in and then seal it up and it cooks on retained heat on the countertop. She did a curry and rice and it cooked the rice on top of the curry, sat aside in their boat all day using no power. Coolest thing ever and handy not to use too much power but with the ease of a slow cooker. They are vegetarian. Anyways - it is Fran and Rich on Floating our Boat. This is the link for the episode I watched and the cooker was somewhere around 8:40. Just something to maybe look at while in the UK and see if you may want one.
    czcams.com/video/zcXjOugkyAc/video.html
I've seen her use it in an earlier episode, but it wasn't really explained, just referred to and I hadn't realized it wasn't plugged in at all.

Us CZcams watches are sooo lucky, We get to watch the construction of so many and varied yachts, be it yours, the trimaran of SLV, Ruby Rose 2. This together with MJ and their self build from a kit effectively and from the ground up with Ross and 'Life on the Hulls' (absloutely amazing and I could never do it but worth checking out) and not to be forgotten the 'Duracel Project' another one you all need to check out! The list goes on with Colin and Parlay and Nanji's new reno on their new/old boat, Melody and finally good old Mark of Wildlings (will he ever get back cruising?). Oh and I almost forgot Sailing GBU and Odd who are reno'd and back out cruising.
We live in amazing times and for me being only a 'short trip' sailor this is so entertaining. I have a condition that prevents me from travelling due to drugs I need that are only available in specialized places and if I was anywhere but Australia would cost over $25,000 a month!
So you guys along with the aforementioned people are an absolute lifeline for me and I wish I could support you all financially.
Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see you in your new boat.

Steel toes will protect your toes up till their bend weight at which point they will cut your toes off instead of crushing them. Fork lift trucks vary in weight, the ones we used (which are relatively small) were 8 tons gross weight I seem to remember. You do not want your toes run over with or without steel toes.
48V is generally the highest safe voltage for DC (so good choice). If a boat owner adds bits made for AC or 12V DC they will generally work safely up to about 48V. Above 48V, AC switches or low voltage switches may arc when turned off and cause a fire (and effectively not turn off as well). It is of course possible to make DC switches for higher voltages but they do start to cost a lot more. Solar panels are often run at a higher voltage and have longer fuses and bigger cutoff switches for that reason. The highest voltage is always the best for efficiency all the way through and up to a point, generally cheaper as well.
The most dangerous voltage? For people, the most dangerous voltage (AC or DC) is 70ish volts which can stop a human heart. I am told that by the time the resistance of the body is taken into consideration, 70v ends up at just the right voltage across the heart to try to control it... higher voltages more often cause injury because of falls or if it's really high (think 1000v) and has lots of current behind it, will burn through. 120/240 are actually pretty safe as these things go. I think I have personally tested this as a child ;)

Extremely informative video. Huge thanks to the folks at Lewmar for the attention to detail and for sacrificing some product to hammer time 😂

The winches seem really cool. Real skill making them . Glad the UK got it's act together again and now makes high quality products. In the past getting something like an electric or electronic item from the UK was just asking for trouble

So Windsor Castle was Elizabeth II's main residence from 2011 to her death in 2022. The royal family actually weren't called the House of Windsor until 1917! The house's historic name is Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (a house that started ruling the UK with Edward VII in 1901). When the First World War came around, there was a lot of sentiment against Germans, and the British public thought a house with a German name ruling the country wasn't patriotic. Even worse that a German Air Force plane named Gotha G. IV was bombing London. So King George V ended up changing it to Windsor after the famous castle.

I am loving that you are looking at performance quality hardware. Heavy custom gear is the fallacy of safety for ‘blue water’ cruising. Please. There is a reason why race boats can do what they do now days. Unfortunately cruising people think racers are crazy or something and never learn from the cutting edge. Light is safe.

My community was the world wide HQ for Taylor Made for nearly 100 years. We still manufacture boat parts and accessories. It was only a couple of months ago that the Lippert logo replace Taylor Made the side of Plant 115.

It's always amazing to see how much actually goes into the products we buy for our boats. These guys look like they are top-notch in what we watched on this tour, and that probably carries over to their other lines as well.

Great tour. The engineering and automation is great for the quality. It’s cold in Florida too as we spread my moms ashes on her favorite beach. Can’t wait to see all these parts on your new boat…on the water!

Excellent episode. Being an engineer I like this stuff. At one time I was making many trips to the UK for business. I really enjoyed my trips and I usually had to go many different places in the UK. I think it is smart what you are doing.

Not sure you’ll see this, but there are some hidden potential defects with tempered glass. One is the growth NiS particles from the heat treat. It is nearly impossible to prevent. The particles are the size of a grain of sand or even smaller. There aren’t many. However it can vary by batch. The particle of nickel sulfide can grow at room temperature, but more slowly than at elevated temperature. If the particle grows enough, the window cracks. It could happen in the middle of an ocean 20 years from now or never. If the tempered window is laminated, you can safely use it until it can be replaced as the glass fragments are glued to the laminate. There is a small chance any good window can fail for this defect (probability is like 1m^2 / 20000m^2.). It varies with glass provider’s effort. No one is immune. There are alternatives to tempered glass. Tempered is still used a lot.
