The Jackson brothers wanted more creative control over their music, but their label Motown wanted to keep that control, so they left. Jermaine was married to Motown founder/CEO Barry Gordy's daughter, so he stayed with Motown.
The Jacksons couldn't use the name Jackson 5 due to Motown's legal rights so they went with The Jacksons.
The guys hired the big name producers Gamble & Huff (the Philadelphia Sound) and made a few decent records and a bit of a comeback. They were touring and continuing the tradition when MJ got the part in the Wiz where he met Quincy. You know what happened next.

Let me introduce you to all of the Jackson's and their roles in the groups and the family
    1. Rebbie Jackson (oldest Jackson kid, released 4 albums)
    2. Jackie Jackson ( Oldest brother, he sings the falsetto notes in The Jackson's & Jackson5 & is 1 of only 2 brothers to always be in the group through every lineup, he usually is the 3rd lead of the group, he has 2 solo albums)
    3. Tito (Tito is the 3rd Jackson kid but also the 3rd most referenced & memorable brother, he plays guitar & sings baritone in the harmonies, and has been in every group lineup, he's released 1 solo album)
    4. Jermaine (Jermaine is the 2nd lead to Michael, he has the most solo albums of all the brothers, he was in the Jackson 5 but when the Jackson 5 in 1976 chose to leave Jermaine chose to stay, he later joined the Jacksons officially in 1983 and never left again, he has 14 albums so the most of any Jackson solo)
La Toya - (she's the 1st Jackson sister to release music, she has a very interesting story & voice, shes actually the most extraverted Jackson, she has 11 albums)
Marlon - (Marlon is actually the 2nd best dancer in the group and he & Michael choreographed alot of the group's routines & would challenge each other, Marlon, Michael & Janet are the best dancers, he left The Jackson's in 85, rejoined after Michael passed. he has 1 solo album)
Michael - YOU ALREADY KNOW LOL 12 solo albums
Randy - The youngest son, he's a 1 man band, and I feel bad for his career cause he's always getting confused with someone, he gets confused for Michael as a kid based on their similar looks as a kid, vocally he & Jermaine sound very similar, and Producer & American Idol judge Randy Jackson has the same name so people think they are each other. He's released 1 album
Janet - YOU ALREADY KNOW BABY GIRL 11 solo albums (12 is coming)

The Jacksons basically has the same members as The Jackson 5 with Jermaine switched out for youngest brother Randy. At 3:07 they appear in this order: Randy, Marlon, Michael, Jackie, and Tito. Two years prior to this, the brothers wanted creative freedom from Motown to right and produce their music as well as receive more royalties from the records they sold. When they were denied this, they moved on to CBS records leaving Jermaine behind because he was married to Berry Gordy’s daughter. Then Motown legally owned the name “Jackson 5” and every variation of the name so they had to change it. In 1976 they released two albums that were good but they were not commercially successful mostly because they were allowed to write about two of the songs on each album and they flopped. Then in 1978, they wrote the “Destiny” album. This album was the first that was written and produced by the group except for “Blame It On The Boogie”. This is the album that re-established them as a platinum selling group. Interestingly enough, this song only peaked at number 54 on the Billboard charts yet it’s still one of their most memorable and most recognizable songs. Randy is the brother with bass guitar. This man was one of the most talented Jacksons. He wrote, produced, played bass guitar, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, drum machine, conga drums, percussion, he could sing and dance-ish. He had been shadowing his brothers for years and when Jermaine left the group he was sworn in and boy was he ready. He’s 3 years younger than Michael; in this video, Michael was 20 which would’ve made Randy about 17.

When they lined up in the video and panned left to right on each brother, the first one in line was the youngest brother named, Randy, who joined once Jermaine left, because he was old enough. Since the original lineup was changed, and they got older, their name changed to just The Jacksons.

The Jacksons came about when they left Motown. Motown would not allow them to take the name Jackson 5, so they became The Jackson’s. That is also when Jermaine was not in the group. He stayed with Motown when the other 4 brothers went to Epic as The Jacksons. So. In this video, there was in order of age: Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael and Randy. Years later, on Motown 25, Jermaine joined the brothers again. The set began with the original Jackson 5: Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael and then Randy joined them (so all 6 brothers were performing on stage). Followed by the iconic solo performance of Michael doing Billie Jean and doing the moonwalk for the first time on stage. That was the moment Michael’s career went into the stratosphere. You should react to Motown 25.

The difference between the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons is that Jermaine had left the group with a recording contract with Motown. They had the group replace him with their youngest brother Randy. The problem with Motown at the time is that the brothers couldn’t put out their original songs without the royalties distributing fairly. So the group was given the option to transfer their contract to Epic records (that was eventually Michaels recording contract for the rest of his solo career) that allows them to do whatever they want with their music. Because of their transfer, the group couldn’t keep the Jackson 5 name because it is a brand to Motown now. So they simply changed it to The Jacksons. In this video, Jermaine is absent, but the brother playing the bass I believe was Randy (correct me if I’m mistaken). Dw in the Victory album, Jermaine comes back to the group, and during tours also Jermaine joins the group to tour.

This song is so much fun!! Thank you for reacting to it!
Jermaine stayed with Motown. He felt an obligation to stay, because he was married to Hazel Gordy, the daughter of Berry Gordy. Berry Gordy was the head of Motown. Because Motown owned the Jackson 5 name, they also had to change their name (into The Jacksons) when they went to Epic. Their youngest brother Randy replaced Jermaine when they moved to Epic. Jermaine rejoined the group in 1984. The other brothers are Marlon, Jackie and Tito.
And yes, Heartbreak Hotel is a song by The Jacksons, but it wasn't Michael's brothers singing in the background in the performance you reacted to. The performance was from the Bad Tour, his first solo tour. They were just his background singers singing there.

Luis Miguel samples this beat in a song called "Será que no me amas" I think it translates to " Is it that you don't love me"
He also has a song called "La Bikina" you should check it out on your Spanish channel. It has great instrumentals.

The Jacksons are Michael Randy Marlon Jackie Tito, the Jackson 5 are Michael Marlon Jackie Tito Jermaine. Jermaine stayed with Motown when the brothers left the label in 1975. Michael is the lead singer so you won't hear the brothers singing lead or verses on many songs. Michael was the lead writer also. This was 1978 so Michael was 19/20 hear.

Some random inspiring quotes that I love: "I don't sing it if I don't mean it." and "Thinking is the biggest mistake a dancer could make. You have to feel. " -Michael Jackson. I would LOVE to see " *Man in the mirror live at the Grammys award in 1988* " in your channel, this is the most EPIC performance ever.

The Jackson 5 - Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael
The Jackson - Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael, Randy
When they left Motown Records to CBS in the mid 70's, they had to change their group name because 'The Jackson 5' name was a Motown Records property and they refused to allow them to use it elsewhere as part of the deal to let them go.
Jermaine Jackson did not follow mainly because he was married to Berry Gordy's daughter at the time, the CEO of Motown Records. It was difficult for him to follow his brothers. So he remained at Motown to pursue his career.

Hi Jack! this song sure makes me wanna dance too haha. The Jackson 5 consisted of Michael, Marlon, Jackie, Tito and Jermaine, but when they left Motown Records and signed with new company(Epic Records i believe) Jermaine stayed behind and was replaced with little bro Randy. And also since Motown owned the right to the name 'Jackson 5' they changed their name to 'The Jacksons', and thats who you see in this video. So Jermaine is in their J5 vids but not the Jacksons vids,.....however, he later joined 'the Jacksons' for tour as well as the album 'Victory' which has all 6 brothers.
