Before they were famous, my wife was in charge of the entertainment for a High School dance. The Jackson's of course lived in Gary, right next door to Hammond. My wife somehow knew about the Jackson's and booked them to play at the dance. If she had only known their future.

R&B Soul music royalty right here at their best! If y’all haven’t jumped down the very deep Jackson 5/Jackson’s rabbit hole, you are in for a treat! You have the late 60’s, early 70’s, mid 70’s, late 70’s(here ), early 80’s and late 80’s. And all that doesn’t even include Micheal’s incredible legendary solo career (as a child, teen and adult, Jermaines legendary solo career, and of course Janet, Rebe and Latoya’s section. And even now Tito has released a few great solo albums recently..

This was recorded after four of the original Jackson 5 left Motown to gain greater creative control. Jermaine stayed behind because he was in the awkward position of being married to Motown president Berry Gordy Jr's daughter. He therefore embarked on a solo career there while the remaining brothers switched labels and drafted in youngest brother, Randy. Had this decision not been taken, it is doubtful Michael Jackson would ever have been given the opportunity to become the icon he developed into. Marvin Gaye and even Stevie Wonder had to threaten to run down their contracts before Gordy would allow them to make the music their hearts dictated. Just imagine, no Off the Wall, no Thriller, no What's Going On, no Talking Book, no Songs in the Key of Life. It doesn't bear thinking about!
Curiously, although Blame It On The Boogie was written by Michael Jackson, he is an English songwriter who happened to share the King of Pop's name. He wrote the song with Stevie Wonder in mind but was persuaded to record it himself using the handle Mick Jackson. At around the same time, people from The Jacksons new label, Epic, were looking for material, heard Mick Jackson's original in Europe and took a recording back to the group, who liked it and were no doubt amused by the strange coincidence. Mick Jackson wasn't about to miss the opportunity to have The Jacksons record his song and its predictable popularity played a large part in the chart success of his own version.

It was Bobby Taylor of Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers who took The Jackson 5 to Motown to audition for Barry in person, who then decided to sign them. All the Jackson children were extremely talented, but there was no doubt who the "star" was, from the very beginning. Gone too soon, Michael.

No, Diana Ross did NOT discover them. People were told it was Diana Ross but it wasn't true.
During July 1968, the boys opened for Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers, at the Regal Theater. After being blown away by Michael's performance, Taylor sent the boys to Detroit where he set up a recorded Motown audition, which took place at Motown's official headquarters on Detroit's Woodward Avenue on July 23, 1968. Gordy, who had initially rejected their tape, refusing to sign any more "kid acts" after Stevie Wonder, changed his mind once he viewed Taylor's tape. On July 26, Gordy returned to Detroit where he had Joe Jackson and the boys sign their first year-long Motown contract.
After initial recordings at Detroit's Hitsville U.S.A. failed to impress Gordy, he sent the Jacksons to Hollywood. In August, Motown's PR machine, led by Suzanne de Passe, started to pass off the group as having been discovered by Supremes lead singer Diana Ross.

This was actually just the jacksons. If you notice randy is in here and not Jermaine. It took me a while to figure that out also growing up. I get it now

Marlon had a hit song as an adult. He was on Johnny Carson or similar talk show. Very genuine and grounded guy. Likeable!
The Jackson’s were for a younger age group than me, but I bought Michael’s “Bad” the day it came out (cassette tape), and my kids and I played the record with the leopard (thriller?) all the time.
He spanned a few generations. Paul McCartney’s collaboration was genius.
I’m sorry he bought the Beatle’s songs though. That would hurt.
