    At West Point Museum there is a large photo of a Huey Helicopter with a soldier underneath it signaling to it. There is no caption to it, but the soldier is holding an SLR and wearing a bush-hat which indicates the soldier is either Australian or from New Zealand. It's in the Vietnam display.

    • @heartsandmindswarhistory
      @heartsandmindswarhistory  Před rokem +6

      That's cool. Good to hear the ANZACs are represented in the collection. He's probably Australian as there were about 20 times more Australians than New Zealanders in Vietnam 👍

      @schizoidboy Před rokem +4

      @@heartsandmindswarhistory It is good it's there to indicate how other nations participated in the war, but in all fairness while it does represent Australia it does so in a way that isn't obvious to anyone unless they know their weapons and equipment. I'm sure there might be Vietnam Veteran who might say - maybe to his grandkids - that the man in the photo is an Australian.

      @@schizoidboy Thank you, that's interesting to hear. Another country on the US side that doesn't seem to get much credit is South Korea. They had almost 10 times more KIA than Australia. RIP ❤‍🩹

      Yes the American history of the Vietnam War seems to only give lip service to the Aussies, Kiwis, South Koreans, Thai and Filipino troops fought alongside the Americans, considering those nations did not have large militaries. When I visited
      family friends in New Jersey in 2008 they were shocked when I told them that the Aussies were in Vietnam.

    • @heartsandmindswarhistory
      @heartsandmindswarhistory  Před rokem +9

      That's true, you often hear that America's allies rejected the war. Most did such as England, France, Germany, but some allies did join the US. Even here in Australia, most people don't know that South Korea fought in the Vietnam War, and they actually lost 10 times more troops than Australia.

      Yes the vast majority were heroes who didn’t get the appreciation they deserved. Politicians and bureaucrats make wars, troops fight them for their brothers beside them. Some wars are seen as good wars, some as bad. The veterans are always the same, fighting, surviving, sacrificing for their band of brothers.

      The Vietnam veterans were ‘the right stuff in the wrong war’, a famous and accurate quote. WW2 veterans came home heroes. The Vietnam veterans didn’t get such a warm welcome. That’s why they’ll always be my favourite veterans because the vast majority were heroes who fought to the best of their ability in impossible circumstances and a completely mismanaged war. The lack of public gratitude makes their heroism even greater to me ❤️
