  • In this video, I'm going to walk you through what comes in the box of the Garmin Overlander Navigator, a couple of options for how to install it in your vehicle (regardless of the make or model), and some of the benefits of the unit.
    I'm installing it in a 2008 Nissan Frontier, so especially if you have a Frontier, Xterra, or Pathfinder, this will have some tips for how to run your wires and install it in your vehicle. But, it's super easy to install and universal so the video will be helpful no matter what kind of vehicle you drive.
    If you've got any questions or feedback, post up in the comments below! If you run this unit, I'd love to hear how well you like it. Thanks for watching and for future videos on how the things works and tips and tricks, make sure to subscribe!

    ❤ this you have the same Head unit I had in my old D40! It was a good one the second go round!

      I had that one in my Frontier and in my previous Xterra and they were great!

    Nice!, bring on the review video. On a side note that 12v port on my Frontier isn't always on. I know this because the multiple usb adapter I have plugged in there has indicator lights that shut off when I turn the truck off.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem

      Huh. Wonder if there's a different between trim levels. In my Xterra that I had before had two plugs (where I only have the one in my truck) and one of them was on the ignition and the other was always on. In this truck, the one in the dash is always on and the one in the center console is on the ignition. Weird.
      Planning to use the Garmin to go explore and mark some spots in about a week so I'll try to get something together diving more in depth!

      @@AllThingsOverlanding That could be. My truck is '12 SV 4x4 w/ the sport package that I bought certified pre-owned. The more I look into things I think the sport package makes my truck a SL in disguise.

    Thanks for the Review, I've just purchased an Overlander, my older unit is GPSMAP 276Cx, i was unable to transfer my waypoints from the 276 to the Overlander, any advice

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem

      I’ve just been adding the main ones manually, but doing it through the computer isn’t great. I however, once you get out exploring, and you waypoints it works fantastic, but getting stuff onto it seems to be kind of a hassle.

    Was interested in this vs a tablet with Gaia GPS. Will be interested to see how it works for you. I know a lot of overlanders swear by Gaia GPS but the only thing I've always liked about having a Garmin is it works without cell service without having to do any area map downloads. Seems like Gaia is more feature rich however.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem +1

      Yep, totally agree with you. I had Gaia for a year and it's great, but there are definitely issues with having to download areas and also with it being on my phone which I use for so many things. I'm excited to have a unit just to dedicate to exploring, and like you said, to always have maps even offline. It remains to be seen if it's got enough functionality to replace Gaia but I feel like it should be pretty good. We'll see!

      dont buy it. i had one for 36 hours before it died and i never even got out the driveway before i got a refund

  • @OverlandPioneers
    @OverlandPioneers Před rokem +1

    Does it allow GAIA GPS?

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem +2

      Nope. Just the Garmin software, but it has built in maps for all of the US already without having to download any maps. For what I do, I think it'll work pretty well but if you wanted tons of ability to customize layers and things like that, you might want a tablet with Gaia.

  • @Overlandlife_
    @Overlandlife_ Před rokem +1

    Would you buy it again or just use Gaia ?

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem +1

      Ooh, that's a great question. I'm torn and probably 50/50. I really like the separate system in the Garmin so I don't have to use my phone (but you could buy a tablet for much cheaper). I also kind of like that it's in a contained system with the Garmin interface as it just means stuff works.
      One of my biggest complaints about the unit is that you have to connect it to a computer to transfer tracks and locations to. It's super inconvenient to not be able to just text coordinates or something like that to the device like I can to my phone.
      I still use it frequently, but I'm probably leaning a bit more towards I would just get a tablet with Gaia, if I'm being honest.

      @@AllThingsOverlanding thanks brother that’s all I needed to know ! I feel like it’s priced too high for what it is. I feel like 300 bucks would be fair but 600 is ridiculous if you have to connect to a pc , but I’m glad you told me I’ll definitely be getting a new tablet with gps !

    I wish we could have it integrated into a head unit.

    • @AllThingsOverlanding
      @AllThingsOverlanding  Před rokem

      I could definitely see the benefit in that. My Eonon touch screen headunit can run Gaia GPS so you could choose some sort of Android based headunit and run an app like Gaia if you wanted that kind of functionality.

  • @dickinaroundoutdoors8609

    You will have to let me know how you end up liking this unit. I have used one for a couple of years which you may have seen mounted on some of our travel videos. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts.

      I definitely will! I'm pretty excited about it. We'll see how good the maps are once I get into the woods, :D.
