I've had dirt and sand bags in my driveway fo do my front yard for weeks. I've cleared the weeds three times - each weekend and put down some of the weed tarp, laid wire for lights, etc. All procrast-urbation stuff. Grab a cold one at lunch time and the neighbors walking their dogs are telling me it's looking good and coming along, "have you been at this since 6 when I was walking this morning?!" I feel accomplished, but really, I should have banged this out in an afternoon instead of messing with loose stones in the retaining wall and then fussing with everything but putting down the dirt, seed, sand and bricks for the walkway. I keep doing just enough and allowing the neighbor's encouragement make me feel good. It started raining minutes ago while I was typing this. I think I'm going to put on my hat and boots and just do this shit now in the rain to get it done. I was going to use the rain as an excuse, but really it'll be miserable and quick.
I just wanna thank the men like Jocko, Echo, Dave, and the others like Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, and Andy Stumpf... Growing up without a father, the oldest of 5... it was rough... and like many fatherless children, I went down a bad, bad path... I pretty much ruined my life throughout my 20s, with drugs, lying, cheating, fighting, and prison time... After my last stint in prison, I barely stayed out of trouble... until I found out I had a daughter on the way... and then I started watching JRE, and saw Jocko, and then Peterson... and that led me to Extreme Ownership. I've taken ownership of my life... I now have a wonderful little family with my wife and two kiddos. It's been rough, but 2 years drug free, I've been with the same company those two years, have doubled my income, and am close to my next promotion... All because I stumbled upon the men who are true men and role models... and taught me what it really is to be a man. I dont think you guys really know the good you're doing in this world... but thank you, for all that you do. Now I'll watch this video. 😂
Echo makes a great point at 8:30. You may always struggle to perform a task when it goes against the prevailing momentum of your day. But how many times have you picked up a screwdriver to fix a major problem - and while the toolbox is out, you also fix a heap of minor ones too, because your head's in that space? Set aside time specifically for the purpose of eradicating the biggest niggle, and my guess is that problems 2, 3, 4 and 5 will topple shortly after.
NGL, to me fixing stuff around the house is cheap mental healthcare, it just soothes my soul. My dad was that way too, he'd fix up the whole house every Saturday and fix up my Gramps place once a month. I try to be that way too. It just feels good. I like bike maintenance and detailing too. That feels real good.
My high school band teacher told us once that he lived by the motto that basically says, "If it takes less than 10 minutes, do it RIGHT NOW." (Not entirely relevant, but he's in the Nat'l Guard too)
Seeing this as im in the middle of watching the Jocko Podcast with Jonny Kim, the SEAL/Doctor/Astronaut/Pilot extraordinaire. Needless to say, motivation is everything lol
Little things don’t really bother you until they build up. But if we hold all of the little things in, they will, and then most of the time one little thing gets all of the frustration.
Literally sitting in my 'gear room' looking around as I'm listening to this and laughing cause its my "bottom locker".....annnnnd 6hrs later completely squared away. Not totally sure where everything is but the 'shelves are up' 🤣
Admiral William McRaven, who has also been on the podcast, talks about it in his book about "Making Your Bed" concept. Annoying minute little details that are easy to procrastinate, but if you just got it over with you could just get on with your day on a positive note, and if you could do it consistently over time, it built a good habit with tangible benefits that you otherwise wouldn't have had you continued procrastinating AKA never doing it
He’s a nwo stooge and full of shit making your bed in the morning is only an “accomplishment” if you just finished playing “2 sheets and a blanket” complete with the pile of 60 mattresses in the middle of the squad bay
This is something I struggle with often, I have what my family refers to as an artists mind. I start projects often and leave them half finished and in the way in my workshop for a month or two till I come up with a way to pass the snag I'm in, and I HAVE to STOP!
I need a kick in my lazy butt from time to time and if myself&my wife fail to deliver it, Jocko and his awesome team won't fail. Gotta do sth I have been putting off for quite some while now and it's high time I just effing did it. Thank you, Jocko!!!
Goals, KPIs, and measurements. Jocko measures everything. That is a best practice for a meaningful life. You can even measure unstructured time for quality relationships. Making space takes discipline.
I'm pretty good about doing it now and with bigger projects just taking that first step of moving things into place gets the ball rolling. In this case maybe just opening up the box and walking away. Now it's on your mind.............thanks

Maybe Jocko has some ideas on how to "square away" the absolute disaster zone San Diego has become with the homeless and unregulated vendors destroying what USED to be "America's Finest City"... Countless Naval personnel over the past century enjoyed going on liberty in downtown SD and the numerous beach areas, as well as bought property throughout SD County, but now with so many businesses closing their doors and effective no-go zones throughout the downtown and beach areas, being stationed there is more of a financial and lifestyle drag than the blessing it used to be. Sooner or later, the military will be called in to restore order. Before then, maybe Jocko can go give a speech to Mayor Gloria and the other "experts" at the city council about "extreme ownership"... before San Diego becomes another failed city in America... and I know Jocko understands the strategic importance of the military facilities throughout the San Diego region.

Btw - I am an Anime fan If u ever get into this medium of art ( I know u read a lot of books), I recommend u to start with VINLAND SAGA or Attack on Titan SE 1 Dubbed. I see a lot of similarities in ur philosophy and stories from Berserk and Other Japanese comics like Vinland Saga. I will be glad if u read this comment.
I think Jocko is one of the wisest human beings and one of the best psychologists on this planet and that discipline and ownership are very important key-principles, BUT I believe deliverance through Jesus Christ is also very important since at least one third of all mental problems like, depression, procrastination, alcohol abuse, drug addiction, porn addiction, anger, hatred, darkness... is the result of demonic oppression.
