The big problem with comparing Trump to Nixon

  • Donald Trump may look a lot like Richard Nixon right now. But there is one glaring difference between these two men’s presidencies: Fox News.

    Trump and Nixon are similar in a lot of ways: they both faced major FBI investigations, were accused of obstructing justice, lashed out at the media, and oozed raw sexual charisma. Some pundits look at those similarities and assert that, like Nixon, Trump will also face impeachment.
    But Nixon never had Fox News. As trust in mainstream media has collapsed over the past 40 years, the amount of conservative media has exploded. And sources like Fox News have spent months casting doubt on the FBI and the Mueller special investigation.
    Without a uniting narrative in the media, it’s unlikely Trump will face impeachment or that Republicans in Congress will be the ones to hold the president accountable for his actions, regardless of what Mueller ultimately finds.

    • @wmiller2811

      I could understand Vox, BuzzFeed or perhaps the Huffington Post, but the only way CNN are "pushing their left wing bias" is if you're so far right that the world is tilted. I can understand complaints about their Opinion pieces, but those are biased, and they are supposed to be. Unlike with Fox, they are not passed off as news, but rather as opinions that you can agree or disagree with. Other than that, their non-political journalism doesn't contain political ideology (I'm not so sure the same could be said for Fox), and their political journalism likes to focus on Trump as he is a very prominent political figure, and lots of people are interested in him, so $$$. Also, the reason why they cover Trump scandals so much is because there are so many, and about such a prominent figure. There is no-one with larger scandals to report on in the USA, except for Harvey Weinstein, and he's old news.

    • @AroundTheBest
      @AroundTheBest Před 6 lety +6

      CNN isn't honest about their bias. CNN disproportionately covers crime stories when whites are the criminal group. When there is a discussion, the "conservative" is selected carefully to appear ignorant and is routinely outnumbered to appear "out of touch". Stories, where Trump is cast in a good light, are ignored while stories, where Trump is cast in a bad light, are exaggerated.
      CNN never questioned the orthodoxy of the "hands up, don't shoot" claims of Black lives matter. CNN has Stormy Daniel's lawyer on nightly. CNN has a new "Trump / Russia" story daily... despite no serious evidence of collusion.
      Pretending that CNN isn't playing fast and loose with facts in an effort to drive public opinion would be a dishonest task.

My dad said that many years ago, people really didn't vote as much on right vs left, even though he himself voted Republican. But there was no issue he had with people voting Libral, and people more often voted against their general "party" that they associated themselves with. Now days, people tend to vote red or blue because that's who they have loyalty towards, not because they have any idea what someone is actually saying.

This video, however, is about two Republican politicians and the Republican party’s attempts to obscure the facts around their respective scandals, so of course it would focus more on conservative echo chambers. Trump won't need to, there has been no evidence of Trump having any direct knowledge or information of the meddling of Russian intelligence with the campaign. His election staff is a different issue which is why they are going after them, they've been trying to find a link back to Trump but cannot. This is pretty much what I expected, Trump most likely had no idea Russia was doing anything to aid him, clueless as he is, he is probably innocent.

    • @m0rthaus
      @m0rthaus Před 6 lety +2

      Whether you believe he is guilty or not, he would absolutely resign if there were enough indicators that he would be successfully impeached - for example if the majority of his own party was calling for it.
      The reason why he'd resign instead of await impeachment is that he would lose his power to pardon his own crime and impeachment. If he were impeached he could be tried and imprisoned for his treasonous acts. If he resigned before impeachment, the vice-president would become president and would certainly issue a pardon to him for his crimes.
      He may be an idiot, but I think even Trump could see in that situation that there are no benefits to awaiting an impending impeachment, and instead resign.

    • @michaelizquierdo6907
      @michaelizquierdo6907 Před 6 lety

      Resignation would be an admission to guilt. Resignation is genuinely used to save face, whether he was guilty or not this would not be the case for Trump. The media rather hates him and will use it to destroy whatever character he has left, The vice president takes over regardless if he's impeached or resigns. Pardons can happen after convictions are dealt. If he resigns before formally being impeached the impeachment charges are dropped and never gets convicted by the senate. If he truly is innocent there is no real upside to him resigning. BTW taking money from Russian businessmen is not an impeachable or arrestable offense unless you can prove that he made promises that would hurt the U.S. defenses. If he took the money for promises that he would be tougher on the Chinese, thats not impeachable.

Which one do you prefer to buy, a book filled purely with raw data, such as statistics, table, graph; or an in-depth analysis regarding those data as well? That's what the news do, they give analysis to frame the data within a context, which because analysis were by human, biases will influence the way the analysis were made.

      and honestly sometimes reporting the facts as they are can just sound biased. like take climate change for example. the majority of the scientific community is in consensus that it's real and man-made. by presenting the facts it's going to sound weighted in their favor bc the opposition just has conspiracy theories, unsubstantiated claims, and fudged numbers from studies funded by companies that benefit from less environmental regulation. so by presenting both sides as equal in the spirit of not sounding biased you perpetuate an argument that isn't really an argument.
      i feel like we don't necessarily need less "biased" news so much as wee need more accurate news, whichever way the facts lean.

    This narrator is hilarious! It occurs to me often that Vox chooses narrators who would definitely rub your average conservative the wrong way (skinny boys, hipster-looking, speaking with vocal fry, sometimes highly flamboyant - presenting in a way that appeals to more to young democratic voters than to, say, an old square stuffy tobacco-chewing fuddyduddy...dare I generalize?). So the viewers most receptive to the Vox minidoc messengers are usually people who already believe the message, to an extent. If Vox had a pseudoconservative sister channel with a bunch of jarheaded beastmen & Kelly Ann Conway lookalikes and republicanesque clickbait titles - while presenting liberal arguments from a seemingly conservative viewpoint - this would be much more useful to everyone, right? Rather than preaching to the choir, we could get the word out to the people most insulated from the facts: Trump's base.
    But that's quite a tangent...all I was initially going to say is that this fellow is one of your most charismatic hosts. Looking forward to seeing more!

William F. Buckley was a very intelligent man no matter your opinion on him and he had very clear ideas on government and he carried, for better or worse, an air of authority. He was the loyal opposition which is needed in any democracy. We should always have a voice that argues the counterpoint because it allows for discussion and the evolution of ideas. What on earth is that terrible graph at 4:37? That's a terrible scale for the y-axis, and it does a terrible job of telling us how much trust in the media has fallen.

    • @AnoopVargheese
      @AnoopVargheese Před 6 lety +2

      Even the bar graph at 5:10 is terribly out of scale. How on earth is anyone supposed to read them accurately?

    • @FF-ob7wl
      @FF-ob7wl Před 6 lety +1

      it's ok: it's used to highlight the difference better.

    • @AnoopVargheese
      @AnoopVargheese Před 6 lety +4

      Actually no. That terrible scaling is only making the differences almost impossible to comprehend. For example, in the 4:37 graph, even though the republican trust in the media has fallen from 50% to somewhere near 10% (which means the trust has fallen to around 1/5th of the original value), that graph makes it look like it barely even dropped.
      Then in 5:10, even though Fox has 5 times the viewership of CNN, the scaling makes it seem like it's only 2-3 times as much.
      So it's not highlighting the differences better. Rather, it's underplaying the differences and making the differences less obvious.

      good call on the terrible scaling to minimalize the change. i briefly researched their source but could not find anything similar.
      the upswing from 51% to 72% in blue in 2017 isn't represented at all.
      CITE sources VOX! don't redraw the graph and call it anything except your creation.
      i'd appreciate anyone replying here to find an original chart intact.

    • @geosock
      @geosock Před 4 lety +6

      More voices isn’t the problem, it’s what they say, or more important what they DONT say. Part of it also goes back to money, because if you think about the 3 networks, they knew they had a sort of monopoly on the news. They didn’t have to worry about ratings so much, so they could give the objective and truthful, no spins and clickbaity stuff. Now however, with all the competition, the news sources with the facts are drowned out by money hungry networks.

      Libertarian-ism is growing quite rapidly actually, its just not something that is voiced in liberal outlets since despite being a moderate and more centrist movement it is slightly right leaning. The reason it is slightly right leaning is because the left has gone more to the extreme then the right, by a fair margin pushing most centrist movements to the right. Most libertarians would actually be moderate liberals, but todays moderate liberals are not moderate in the least, the scale is tipped further to the left, the very minimal extreme right tip is just a reflex reaction but its the smallest political ideology, most conservatives haven't moved much from their position and are in no way extreme or racists or bigots or uneducated.
