  • Dauphin Island Alabama - A Drive on the Island
Dauphin Island, Alabama, named after Louis XIV's great-grandson, is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing the Gordon Persons Bridge, three mile long high rise bridge, which opened a in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island.
The island is approximately 14 miles long and 1 3/4 miles wide at the widest point. The eastern six miles are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations.

It has changed quite a bit since I was there shortly after they opened the first bridge in the 1950s. Did a lot of floundering and soft shelling on the little islands along the route of the firstbridge. Those were the days, when I was a young buck on the land and sea.

I still get the heebie jeebies driving over the tall bridge.
And there's some good fishing at 'Sand Island' towards Fall. :)
East winds are least, West winds are best!
    Safe travels! :D

It is an interesting place to visit. Actually, during the summer it is not overcrowded like some beach areas. If you are a historian, you should definitely check it out. I have several videos of the island plus many videos of the surrounding area. Thanks for the comment.

Dauphin island is great once you get to know it. Just don't drink too many beers and attempt to cross the bridge. The police are looking for people like you. They hide behind the dumpsters at the weigh in station. I am from Mobile.
