- After years of stability questions about the hull design for the U.S. Navy’s new three-ship class of stealth destroyers, the commanding officer of the lead ship, USS Zumwalt, is satisfied: It handles the seas as well, if not better, than previous classes of surface combatants.

Yup
You're just saying that because a WWII cargo ship has more armor... Oh wait... That's a bad thing.
Branch peace
How much armor do these ships have?
@@CulverEmpireV27
0 Don't know any USN DD,DDG,DLG,DE that's ever had any.
This video decisively proves the Zumwalt can handle the calm waters of any harbor.
Lol
Perhaps the meta centric lever arms are so small more than 35 degree roll, she flips. How about making 10 smaller faster heavily armed light ships, these expensive ships are floating targets.
hey! i for one think its a fine ship
*Pearl harbor intensifies*
I wish u woulda specified
Why does this ship look sharper than all of my kitchen knives 😂🤣
Waterdynamic is good you know! 😅
Because it is.
Because you dont have GERMAN KNIVES!

Was hoping to see some actual big seas and how she handled. As a sailor who actually encountered a typhoon in the South China seas on a destroyer I wanted to see some real weather.
True. Amazing what sand crabs call rough. I'm guessing the capt took her to Alaska because he heard there was going to be a dime beer night.
Seriously when I first went on board a tin can I thought the 2 straps were to hold my blanket and pillow. The first rough weather I joined the other greenhorn on the deck while listening to othe crew members howl. They had waited for the moment 😊

Former carrier quartermaster. Worked on the bridge. Rough seas is when they wash across the flight deck, and everything that can fit in hangarbay is tied down. Watching from the bridge as the forward section of the flight deck plows under oncoming swells and then rising again is the best ride in the world.
I was on CVN 70 CARL VINSON I remember having waves crashing over our elevators and water rolling into the hanger deck . Also once while in the Indian Ocean we were trying to out run a typhoon we encountered rough seas and for the first time while sitting at a table in our berthing playing cards my chair and I slide away from the table. There was one other time we had sea trails there were no air wing on board and we went out while there was a storm now that was a wild ride I was walking up hill then down hill...lol i know that doesn't sounded like much of anything to a sailor on a small boy who experience pitch ,roll, and heave and walk the bulkheads. But Because the carrier was always so Cadillac I knew we were in heavy seas.
On a destroyer, rough seas are when you stay clear of all weather decks.
The sea was quite calm at 1:22 but you can already see a lot of spray travelling along the inverted bow onto the deck of the ship. The Zumwalts may be stable but must be very wet even at moderate sea conditions.
My Dad was a radioman 3rd class on the USS Moffat during WW2,they were in the North Atlantic. This one's for you, Dad. Love you and miss you.
o7 salute for your dad
Good.thing we got to see how it handled in those calm waters
Everybody gangsta until the iceberg starts moving towards you
It has high tech radars can detect a needle floating or a paper flying
I feel like I've been taken for a ride....I didn't get my click's worth...
There's footage, It has 360 degree camera setup like new vehicles have, it's classified.
@SCP 682 no, not "clicks" he said his single click wasn't worth clicking the video. So "my click's" makes sense.
I, too, was expecting some sea action that never arrived. However, the big delivery is that the naysayers were wrong with their dire predictions the vessel would prove to be unseaworthy. That is a very big deal.
"Able Seaman, Rand! Wouldn't you say that the Zumwalt has exceptional sea keeping capability?!"

When I first saw the Zumwalt, I thoght it was a strange looking ship; however, the more I see her, I have taken a like to her. What's not to like, the ride is smoother, has a somewhat stealth mode and other countries cannot see your goodies. I have no doubt that the Chinese and Russians will copy design once we test it.
Seeing this Zumwalt class... It reminds me of the old American Iron clad early warships...
Merrimack.

Back to boxy ironclads? Pretty sure they didn't have radar detection issues back then. 😁
It really does look like the Merrimack, good call
It looks so futuristic one of them should be called USS Enterprise.
Robert Phillips there are actually going to make a new ship called the enterprise but not for a while
But Enterprise should be a Carrier
How about calling one of them Defiant or say Voyager then?
yeah it's a supercarrier
It looks like a grumpy old man... the US doesn't know how to make good looking ships, the British do tho!
I swear I drew a picture of that ship in 5th grade!!!
Nice what did the class think
Design by Tesla for sure and its electric go figure
More like 1st grade lol
I drew one too
Same, but mine had cannons fireing on giant robots.
I was aboard the USS Wiltsie DD 716 in 1970. Rear Admiral Zumwalt was in charge of the 7th fleet on the Westpac Cruise. Navy ships have really changed from 50 yrs ago.
That’s the roughest calm I never experienced

The USS Zumwalt looks gorgeous but, it somehow looks like squidward's house.
And the Yamato looks like Spongebob's lol
Squidward house is stealtly too
It looks best from the side i think. And from 3/4ths angle.
What? This is the ugliest ship ever built.
@@colinmontgomery1956 ok, one, huge exaggeration. Two, youve apparently never seen a french pre dreadnaught.
A Bit disappointed Not Much Stormy Sea Sailing...
Agreed, a 40ft yacht crossing Bass Straight or the English Channel should be able to handle a 9 meter sea and a 6 meter wave at the same time, which of course means the seas are larger than the boat. I have done it. A U.S ship should be able to handle more than a 4 foot sea.
Take that thing down to the southern oceans and then send another post. Perhaps range, fuel capacity, gross tonnage and crew capacity would be more exciting?
I was actually in Alaska when they docked in ketchikan. We ended up meeting the captain and turns our we were from the same city in Mexico. He took us on a private tour and I got to sit in the captains chair. Was one awesome experience
Damn!
Other ships : we need to avoid bad weather!
Zumwalt Destroyer : We are looking for bad weather!!!
Actually the Admiral's name was pronounced like Zoomwalt. Navy ships don't have propellers they have screws. This ship and others like it make me wish I was young again. I would join up once more to be part of this Navy.
fucking tell me about. i was in the navy 96-97 and i can honestly say it was the best time of my life. i would do anything to be able to enlist again. but im too old and out of shape aswell hehe
Elijah Hodges, the use of ‘propellers’ here was due to a quote by the actual officer, not the narrator. Maybe he chose the word so civilians would know what he meant, since not everyone understands that ‘screws’ refers to the water propulsion devices.
We loved the Admiral's Z grams that loosened Navy hair standards slightly.
They really want to test the Zumwalt's roll recovery abilities....send them to the North Sea and see how fast they pass Sea State 6.
Tech News for Tech The North Sea is not for the faint hearted & it can get very choppy in a couple of hours!

The bow desighn is so amazing the ship doesn’t even deviate upward during rough sea.
Deviate?
Typically most ships depending how they are designed may or may not handle rough seas. If the design of the ship can't handle rough seas then you got a problem.
Yes
MaxHD2490 Avenger I know most ships work in high seas I’m talking about it’s stability. It looks as if waves don’t effect the pitching angle much.

Oh how I miss those days of swinging thru the air letting the sails down to catch a good wind.
That's pretty friggin cool! Just kind of slices through the waves.
This ship had a major galvanic corrosion problem and had to have many parts replaced after the first sea trials.
Looks like my boat I built back in 80s when my granny updated her kitchen. I put all the boxes together and this same ship
Real great seeing Zumwalt . Passed by here leaving Newport Rhode Island. Awesome look ,feel of accomplishments U.S. Naval Command.
1.4 Billion $ ship can float ! That's great technology!
Big wave will leave it alone , after all, Zumwalt already tumbled, sailed upside down at the beginning of the long journey into seven sea.
TRULY AN AMAZING SHIP ..anyone one her is one blessed sailor..thank you all who SERVE & have
She cuts threw those waves like a sword. Magnificent looking vessel.
Yeah, like any ship does! 😁

The computer animation handled the seas well. I wish they had real video of the ship in heavy seas.
And just like that, LCS class ships were never seen again
Was on a spruance in north atlantic high seas. Pitch up light as a feather...pitch down heavy heavy... Side to side, hold on to angle iron or bounce off it. Loud boom when sonar dome hits on pitch down.

Been watching this DD in calm lake like waters, and months ago asked how does she handle heavy seas ? So today this
video comes along to talk heavy seas. And the heavy Alaska seas, looked tough, but they were empty sea shots, the Skipper saying she handles better than ANY surface ship he has sailed in, but the ONLY shots of DD 1000 are the same
old calm water shots , seems strange with the title of this video , they didn't show a single shot of her "with a bone in her
teeth" , in heavy seas. seems strange !
Tumblehome hulls were of course abandoned when their proclivity to capsize when taking on water dunked the idea. Today's use must presume a superior defense ability. Perhaps also other new safeguards against hull breach induced capsize. The return of the tumblehome hull. I woulda' never thunk it.
Also, like Jason Frederick, I complain that real film the Zumwalt In high water wasn't available in this vid.
Early french pre dreadnaught use tumblehome - it was found that while it initially gave stability in moderate seas in extreme roll it was slow to roll back
It looks like the hull is upside-down.
I wonder if all the sailors on the Zumwalt have long hair and beards, we loved this guy in the 70’s for his relaxation of some of the personal grooming standards.
Only the women.
Run it through part of a typhoon or something really rough and see how it takes a really serious roll, say 15 degrees or more.
Imagine you live in the 1700s, your sailing and you see this thing coming right at you
I like the pop-up rader on the bow. Clever.
Not one photos or image of it in 12-20 ft seas.
Didnt I see this boat on league of extraordinary men. I believe the boats name was the nautilus iv.
You're right. There is a resemblance.
That was awesome how the zumwalt got some major air off that 30 foot wave 🤪
I like how the the windows on the bridge look like it’s eye brows are froufroued

it is so beautiful minimal design of the future warship that looks smart, it is light and it should be especially agile
I wonder how “stealthy” a destroyer can really be
so stealthy they have fitt the ship with special reflectors to be detected during events where the zumwalt is shown with other boats
What he meant to say was that the boat does not have any flat sides or body panels, they are all angled in a direction that would deflect radar singles that they can’t bounce back to the radar unit, basically making it invisible to all modern radar systems
As a former submariner I can say that it would make a fine target.
Damn ancients got it right. I always believed that the pyramids were built for floods or just bad weather around
Cool looking, time well tell
ACR-3 USS Brooklyn (1896-1922) had the tumble home design, It is a French design, and it is one of the most stable in rough seas, never mind looking totally cool. these ships even standing still, give an appearance of speed and stability.
Question is does it transform?
