Excellent video. Just replaced mine and unfortunately, still nothing up or down. Will not work from three different switches so I know that is not the issue. Still searching for the problem.
I will add that to test the relay before purchasing a new one, disconnect the large plug with the blue and green wires shown in the video first. With the power connected, put a voltage meter across the terminals coming from the relay inside of the plug. Press the up or down switch and if you see 12 volts then you know that power is going through the relay down to the motor.
Great pointer, I will put this at the top of the comments as some addition info....thanks
I have the tilt trim issue and was hoping there might be something about it on CZcams, and Wow! This video is terrific! I'm getting a new relay switch today. THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU ARE THE MAN!
You are so welcome! ETEC Owners have to stick together
Mate ! A Massive thanks from down under, your a bloody legend! Saved my chops.. Love your work!
Thank you very much, glad this was able to help you
dealing with this exact issue on this exact motor as we speak, your video is a lifesaver dude, you're the man
It amazes me how many others have had this exact issue...glad it has helped
What happened when yours went out? My ETEC randomly tilted itself all the way last night as I slept and then somehow drained the battery. When I recharged the battery and try the trim switch I can hear the motors working but there is no movement on the motor so is this a relay issue or a hydraulic issue??
This video helped me fix my problem for less than $100 and I know my mechanic was going to charge me $400+ and that was after it sat on his lot for 4 weeks waiting for him to get to it. Thank you, kind sir! Awesome video!
Thats awesome to hear...thats the reason I made this video....love hearing that it helped and saved you some $$$
Good video, but not one video on my 150 Johnson on the power trim sticking in the down position . I eliminated the front and steering wheel switch so could it be the switch on the motor or in the shifting handle ?
I know this is going to help a lot of folks, I never seen anyone upload a video on this issue. Well done bro!
I sure hope it helps someone...its pretty good info for DIY types
helped me, thanks for taking the time to do it.
Awesome
Awesome explanation, saved our forth of July weekend! We appreciate your willingness to share valuable information.
Awesome to hear it helped....thank you
Thanks for all the support my friend! Means a lot to me!
Love the channel man....no problem
Just successfully replaced this relay on an ETEC150 that wouldn't trim up. Worked great! Thanks.
That's awesome to hear...glad this helped
excellent video, just right to the issue without needless comments, one of the best youtube videos ive seen. very nice job and THANKS!
Glad you liked it! Thank you
Great stuff. That manual release is good to know. My 225 might be a bit to raise, but it's good to know I have the option.
Yeah definitely need help on the raising part since they are heavy.
Check your motor trim limit switch first and if it is working fine, replace the relay. This video is very helpful. Thanks.
Great suggestions
That was a great repair brotha, this will help a lot of people out. Excellent attention to detail.
Thanks a ton
Great information.. I never had tilt go out but now I know how they function..
Pretty straightforward replacement..
Yeah it really is not to bad...lots of plug and play stuff on these new motors
Great info, manual release is a life saver. My old man rocks and Etec. Great outboards.
Its a great engine...I love mine
This is indeed an awesome how to video, will hopefully help lots of people. Thank you for sharing
I hope it helps some people out as well...I was just going to replace it and be done with it, but thought it would be a good opportunity to maybe help some others out with this issue...so I broke out the camera
Dude !!!! This video was great !!! I just changed mine... I have a 115, even less room to,get to big connector down below.
Here is a hint... I used coat hanger to hold lower one up, to push the top part or connected from new relay in... was so easy I said ... hmm this was to easy !
Great idea on the hanger....it has amazed me the amount of views and comments I have gotten from this video...turns out this issue is pretty prevalent on these motors.
Very informative and helpful video. This exact thing happened to me this week and this vid helped solve the problem
That's awesome to hear....glad this was helpful....plus hope it saved you some money

Mine just would not trim from any of the switch’s…it was intermittent and gradually got worse

This guy knows his stuff thanks for the good advice
Thank you
You are the man! I had this exact same problem and this was the fix. Thank you!
Glad it helped...awesome to hear you are up and running again
Good step by step repair video. One time my tilt would not work and had to release some air out of the reservoir.
I have seen a few that got air bound as well...always something with a boat...lol
Easy step by step video. Great Job! Thanks and Fish On. 😎
Thank you....I hope this has help save some people headaches and money
Nice video! good info on how to get the motor back down with the manual release.
Yeah,, I found a lot of people did not know that, I am doing a video that strictly focuses on that part next.
Before using the manual release, I recommend trying the trim limit switch that is located on the pivot shaft. This solved my problem in about 2 minutes
Great suggestion, but was a no-go in my instance.
@@1Cast1Fish Where is the pivot shaft located? Have you done a video of this too?
Awesome educational video 1cast!..this will help alot of people!
I hope it helps some people out as well...I was just going to replace it and be done with it, but thought it would be a good opportunity to maybe help some others out with this issue...so I broke out the camera
When in doubt bust it out!
Got that right
Love guys like this - Champion!!
Thank you
Great tip. Thanks for sharing my friend. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family 🦃 🦃🦃
To you as well
Great video, huge help. It was my exact issue. Thanks
Awesome, I am super happy to know how many this has helped
I didn't realize there was a manual lift/drop! That's good advice for boat owners!
Yeah a lot of people have no idea...I might do a video on just that feature in the future
Great video. Nice to see you on Pusa studios today.
You as well
Thank you for all the information. best wishes for you and take care
Thank you...you as well buddy
Great service to us all, thank you.
Glad it helped :)
Nice tips and awesome vid. Don't know too much about motors, but do know at least a bit more now. Hopefully my dad can get a boat soon so we can fish the susky more offshore 🖒🖒🐟🐟🎣🎣🎣💯💯 tight lines!
Thanks...and good luck getting a boat...it definitely opens up a lot more water
Lol good advice. I always tear stuff apart and then scratch my head on how it goes back together 😁
LOL...yeah me too, that's why now I label and mark stuff....oh and take pictures
An excellent video. Thank you !
Glad you liked it! Thanks
Well made video. It will help a lot of people. Nice boat too!
Thank you so much...I sure hope it helps others out
Thanks for info may save me from getting stuck out on the water.
Glad to help
Great information, nice GoPro harness! 👍😎 ~Maverick
It works pretty good...I am happy with the harness so far...thanks for watching
Great and informative, thanks for making
Hope it helped, thanks
Wow this was interesting to me and even though l will probably never have to do this always good to learn something new anyway.
Never know when you can use some random information you found on CZcams :)
Dropping another LIKE on your video! Watching and Supporting!
Thanks a ton
Good info. Especially the manual drop
Yeah a lot of people did not realize that is there on all motors that are hydraulically tilted.
Good info my Daddy was an Evinrude man👍
Good taste
Thanks for the video. Mine gave out in me on the water today. Luckily I was able to get it to work while tapping on it relay and holding down the trim button
Same thing for me...very intermittent until nothing....don't wait
@@1Cast1Fish absolutely. Ordering mine tomorrow after talking to my local service rep. Keep up the great videos
Hope they have them in stock for you, took me a few weeks to get mine as it was a low stock item at the time
@@1Cast1Fish I got me one today and the install went easy thanks to this video. Much appreciated
Glad it helped and made things easier
Dude you helped me sooo much thank you 🙏 🫡👊
Happy to help
Great video explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Good video, I'll ask you. I have the same trim on an evirude 90hp, etc. When I'm in the water and I compensate with the trill and I leave it after a while while sailing, it goes down on its own, which could be
Possible it is a leak in the hydraulics internally...especially if you see no obvious leaks and the fluid level is good. Normally would mean rebuild time.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! Got the part off amazon for $40. I would note that on mine the copper washer I had to screw off and be careful because it is sharp. Is there any spray coating to spray the nuts with? A quick fix is just tap on the relay. It worked on mine every time and saved a fishing trip. Love it we have the same motor.
Glad you were able to get a part and it has worked for you, I never coated any of mine
you did a great job with one question. What in the world would make you think that the three red wires need to be in any specific order on the starter terminal with main power? They just don't friend. It matters zero whether the relay you replaces is placed on that terminal first, second or third. Just get them all back on. Then the main battery terminal last. Perfect. The rest is great. Have a great one.
Prost found you from bumpy road and subscribed
Awesome....thank you so much
Great information thanks for sharing!
Thank you
1Cast 1Fish you’re welcome buddy!
Awesome video. I haven't had problems yet but I have the same engine .
Other than this mine has been perfect....knock on wood or fiberglass
@@1Cast1Fish have you had to fill the trim fluid yet ?
Nope
Great tutorial!! any tricks to access the lowest quick connect! mine is pretty deep and my hands are just to big to reach. will see if my son can but it you have any tricks or tips please share
You may be able to get a flat screw driver down there to the clip...I was able to get my hand down there, but it was extremely close and tight.
Great instructions!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you
Yea you did. Great job and video
Thank you
Great information 👍
Thank you
Got a 150 etec and now it work trill up full far enough to flip up trailering bracket..yes I used manual release and added fluid but still a issue not going up enough...never had troubles before..ya got a answer what to do to adjust
I am by no means a marine tech, but I think that there are adjustments for limits on how far it goes up. I would google it...I think its kinda like a plastic tab
Nice boat and a helpful video🖒🖒
Thank you so much
1Cast 1Fish what could be the issue if your tilt rim is continuously running “up”?
Saved me 350 bucks TY
Awesome...glad it helped
Great tip great video
Thank you
great info bro!!
Thank you
Nice video new to your channel stopping by to show some love
Thank you
Thank you, Sir. Very much.
You are most welcome
ours since new which we have to live with no technicians. Runs great but if you push it hard open it up the over heat alarm 🚨 tone goes off? Three thousand rpms happy go past that she not happy. Z118 ranger evinrude 150 h.o. Funky thing is does it then doesn’t do it even if you run hard? Been chasing our tails? If any body works on them what the heck? Is the thermo stat stuck or not opening all the way? Does she need a hotter thermo stat?
A buddy had a similar issue years ago and it was a T-Stat issue...when the alarm goes off it puts the motor in kind of a limp mode that limits RPM.
Thank you for the video! I have the same problem in my Evinrude 150. The thing is that sometimes its works ok and sometimes you have to spend ten minutes pushing de down botton to make it work. Do you think its also de relay? Thank you and cheers from Argentina
Very possible...mine was intermittent
Does this apply to the up trim as well?? Is there another relay somewhere for the up trim or is it the same one you did. I have A 200 Etec Ho. Thanks.
The relay does both the up and down function.
Very helpful video
Thank you
Never knew about tilting it manually like that (I don’t own a motor tho 🤣). Thanks for sharing, it’s a great tutorial! 👍
Yeah I am finding out that not many people know about the manual release
Hahahahaha EDwaeasq was
Good2 know indeed 👍🏼
Nice share.
🐺 🐾
Thank you
Awesome video
Thank you so much
Good heads up 👍
Thanks...sure it will help someone out there
Great video I changed my relay but still have the issue with my motor going up whenever it wants too, both buttons act the same way so highly doubt its the buttons, have a brand new relay same issue was wondering if anyone had the limit switch go out and give them similar problems.
I have seen the switches go bad on the throttle before or another switch at the bow (if equipped)
I found the problem my limit switch for the trim was bad
Glad you figured it out... always sucks chasing boat problems
What happened when yours went out? My ETEC randomly tilted itself all the way last night as I slept and then somehow drained the battery. When I recharged the battery and try the trim switch I can hear the motors working but there is no movement on the motor so is this a relay issue or a hydraulic issue??
I am by no means a professional on these motors, mine just would not tilt back up or down from any switch on the boat or motor.
Great video ain't had that issue but now I know an knowing is half the fishin lol
True....I did not know this stuff either at one time, and no YT videos on it, so I saw it as a opportunity to teach.
I KNOW IT'S AN OLDER VIDEO BUT I HAVE SAME MOTOR, DID YOU HAVE VIDEO OF REMOVING LOWER UNIT TO CHANGE RUBBER WATER PUMP IMPELLER? THANKS
I did, but had issues with the video...so probably in another 2 years when I replace it again I will try again.
Great video. I’m having a trim problem. I can’t trim up on the bow and at the motor. The down works everywhere. No problem at the throttle. And suggestions?
So mine had issues trimming up to start with...it would not trim from the motor, bow, or throttle. It eventually just stopped working period. For me I had no tilt/trim control from anywhere on the boat, which made it easier to track down to the relay. I would not be sure what your issue could be if you still have control at the throttle but not from others. Could be the relay still as mine was very intermittent at first and got worse, but I would not feel comfortable telling you 100% that is the problem.
Thanks for the reply. It’s more of an annoyance than a problem. It’s too coincidental to be the the switch with 2 doing the same thing. I don’t think it’s the relay because it works at the throttle. I’m stumped
Yeah, that id weird that it works on the throttle but the other 2 don't...wish I had a idea, but I am stumped by that one too
That is likely the trim limiting switch that stops the trim once it’s raised too high. Switch is under the top of the ram area.
Great tips
Thanks....I am hoping it will save someone else some time and money if they have the same issue
Hi. Why is it so critical to have all 4 of the power and ground ring terminals in order the way they came off the studs? I read this post after I had mine apart.
Not sure if it’s electrically critical, I just like to put things back the way they came off.
What year motor is that? I had a couple trim motors go out on my old 2006 150hp Yamaha VMAX HPDI (2 stroke). Due to motor problems, I bought a Mercury 150 FOURSTROKE for my boat
this year.
This was a 2013 ETEC...the tilt/trim has acted up for awhile, just very intermintent...it finally got worse and was due for a replacement...a few months out of warranty...lol.
@@1Cast1Fish that is what happened to me, 1 month out of the 5 year warranty and the trim motor went out. What do they have these things programed to break. LOL!
Yeah when I got the part it showed it as a "Fast Moving" part....so must be a common issue
good video I have my evinrude etec 90 hp that the trim is lowered only that it is failing
Hopefully you get it fixed and it works like new
Legend thank you
Thank You :)
My ETEC 150 trims up and stops just short of allowing the trailer bracket to drop into place. The motor operates up & down fine. Could this be a fluid issue?
So there are actually stop limits that ride on the cam they are can be moved by hand to limit up travel by the motor. Look up adjusting tilt trim limits and such. It’s very simple and straightforward once you see them.
I turned the hydraulic release the motor went down but wont go up. Do you know what would cause this?
The weight of the motor made it go down...now if your hydraulic tilt motor does not work you have to keep the release screw and lift the motor back up...then tighten the screw while it is up. If its a big motor it will be super heavy...so get some help.
First, the audio, video, and production value of this video is amazing. Really high quality and makes it easy to follow along. Now, does your trim down work intermittently or just not at all? Did you hear the relay click before you replaced it? I have a boat where the transducer mount location throws a lot of water *directly* at this trim switch. It seems like the switch is well corroded, but it does still work at times and I'm not sure why.
Do the relays just get unreliable before they go bad? Is there any way to test them? There's so many ghosts in this boat's electrical systems that I'm still chasing down so I'm wondering if it's not a voltage issues somehow. I'm replacing the switch because i could see the rust running out of it and honestly can't figure out how to get it back together in a waterproof package so right now it's naked metal tabs just on the outside (but working!) on the motor cover.
Appreciate your details right from the start. How to do an emergency fix to get home, safely working with power, reminding to label and take notes, and showing the detailed steps.
Glad the video help you out and was easy to follow. In my case the switch started working intermittently only. When it would not work it did not work from any switch and no noises at all from the relay. If your switch was very rusty I would definitely look at fixing that issue, but if possible does your motor trim from the other trim controls at the helm? If the trim on the helm throttle works, but the one on the motor does not, then it is likely just your motor switch.
@@1Cast1Fish Yeah when it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work from anywhere. Guess it might be the relay. I ordered a new switch and relay anyway. Hopefully it’s not another weird low voltage situation. 🤞
Sounds like it could be relay...hope it fixes it for you....chasing issues with these things is a pain.
Cool thank you for your help
I definitely hope this helps someone out there
Great a fairly easy DYI. Gets you up and running and no doubt saves you some serious cash not having the dealer do it for you.
Dealer prices are crazy...heck even the new part was crazy since they are a sealed unit now and not old style relays like on older motors.
Well done. If only all repairs were just as easy. lol
I know right...I just hope this one helps someone out there
Nice. Thanks.
How'd you figure the problem was with the relay and not a switch or wiring fault?
My 90 HP is running itself up. Killed the battery twice (did it after we left the boat), then ruined an outing when it became nearly continuous WHILE WE WERE OUT BOATING. Holding the throttle trim switch to "dn" countered the uncommanded up-running.
A bit diffrent than my issue, but I was able try trimming with 3 diffrent switches in my boat and none worked. These relays are one piece now and control both up and down. Sounds like yours could be stuck closed in the up position. Is your problem intermittent?
Yours coul also be a trim switch in the boat that is faulty
@@1Cast1Fish yeah. Mine is intermittent. My first thought was a switch... But which one!?!
@@737smartin you can check voltage at the switchs when it acts up. Mine did not continue to go in any direction...which is why I went the relay route.
Hey, Steve Martin... My 90HP E-Tec is doing the exact thing that you describe. What did you ultimately determine was the problem/cause?
Awesome! Thumbs Up!
Thank You
My trim/tilt works with switch on engine but not switch on throttle/shift. Any idea where I look? Thank you
I would venture to guess bad switch or wire issue from the throttle tilt/trim switch. In my issue none of the switches worked which led me to the relay
Professional!
Thank you so much...glad you liked it
nice video but how did u know it was the relay and not the switch? im having same problem but the outboard trims both ways up at the hand controllers
I had the same issue regardless of the control point to trim up and down. If you only have the issue from one switch, it might just be a bad switch.
@@1Cast1Fish yer cheers mate the switch on the out board now doesnt even click when u press the down button so yep say it was just the switch :) cheers for the help but :)
@@djhinormas959 should be a easy fix for you, just hope the part is available and not on back order.
Great video my friend. Sorry we have been on vacation in Texas. Back and catching up.

Thank you!!!
You are welcome
Thanks heaps for this video mate, mine is doing the same but won’t go up.

When I recharged the battery and try the trim switch I can hear the motors working but there is no movement on the motor so is this a relay issue or a hydraulic issue??
@@Lhewk It was the Trim/Tilt sensor, ,,disengaged the sensor as in cut the wires to it,all good now, it does trim up way more than before but all good no issues after that..
My trim/tilt works fine from the switch on my control box, but the switch on the motor does not work. Does this mean my relay is probably fine but the outboard switch is bad?
I would look at the switch, my issue nothing would work
Can anyone point me in the direction of where to order the relay. I just had my trim tilt overhauled costed 1200 bucks. Now I can save me some money by doing the relay on my own. Thanks friend this video very helpful.
I ordered mine through my local marina
thx good job.
Glad it helped...Thank you
