I was there, damn what a race..I lived a cross the highway from the race track on Southland Dr..I was 19, man this brings me back, Gr8 times..y'all have a blessed week.....
Waltrip's summary at the end sounds about right to me. I may be a bit biased as a Labonte fan but I dont think Terry meant to hit DW at all. Earnhardt threw a solid block and after Terry hit the wall the rest was basically just a result
Looked to me like Texas Terry came down on DW and just wasn't quite clear. DWs not obligated to lift for Labonte. Not on the last lap anyways. Feel bad for Labonte because it looks like he had the most car but those are three superstar drivers and he just got a little unlucky. What a great race!
It was till 1999 when the corners were narrowed slightly to make room for the larger pit road. Up until then Martinsville had 2 separate pit roads (1 on the frontstretch and 1 on the backstretch), when they combined the 2 it took up more room in the infield and they had to narrow the track.
That's about what I saw too. Sr didn't do anything wrong either. They're all trying to win a race they're all incredible drivers. What a treat to see all of them in their prime
Hasn't changed since 1950 except for the concrete on the bottom lane of the turns and the pits reconfigured in the late 90s that eliminated the backstretch pit. Sort of made the track look different.
@@mindofmyown333 The straightaways were narrowed a bit to widen the pits when a single pit road was designed. That also took away all that grass so the sightlines are different. This is the Martinsville I remember.
You should see old Richmond compared with today’s. I don’t think I ever saw the old configuration when a kid, but today’s is my stomping grounds. Will be going for the spring race , but my 1st 500 makes me giddy !!!
Back then, not all of the races were shown live. The ones that weren't were typically broadcast at some other time as an hour or so highlight program, like this.
Some examples of networks that did this were SETN and Mizlou. By the time 1987 rolled around, this practice was cut to maybe just a small handful of races a year, wiped out completely by 1989.

Agree 💯 these three are amazing racecar drivers. Great race. Nascar got it right I think
The in car cameras of Bodine a & Waltrip at the '87 Daytona 500 are amazing. Waltrip looks like just another day at the office.
The race that made Darrell a fan favorite 😆
Thanks NASCAR for the upload.

Back when NASCAR was in its’ glory days. Thanks for the upload.
Lol, what do you mean "glory days"
Back when NASCAR was still ascending from a regional to national/international sport; halcyon days, if you will.
good image quality. Thanks!
Wow; this vid is very crisp, and clear, to be 30+ years old. Fantastic.
Just imagine if they could bring these cars back and let the nascar drivers today do like a 50 lap shootout at these allstar races
Wont for safety reasons
It’s called I-racing …. Other wise these are not ANYWHERE as safe as new cup cars.
@Kharn The Betrayer I Racing isn't real its a video game and it wasn't meant to be taken literal
@Ryan For sure because this new car hasn't caused the most injures/ concussions in a single season
@@Allintn22 odd how it’s taking off and has produced a current cup driver….. But it’s not that big…..
Earnhardt started the whole thing by running Terry into the wall.
Need a nascar game with all the cars through out the years in it.

The tide has turned into a checkered 🏁
My hat is off for Dale sr.
I love this!! Reminds me of when I was a kid. Harry Gant and Richard Petty were my favorites back then.
You can see Waltrip got Terry sideways, then Terry over corrected and got Dale.
MARTINSVILLE looked so much wider for some reason
It was till 1999 when the corners were narrowed slightly to make room for the larger pit road. Up until then Martinsville had 2 separate pit roads (1 on the frontstretch and 1 on the backstretch), when they combined the 2 it took up more room in the infield and they had to narrow the track.
Don't forget too that the SAFER barrier has since narrowed up the track even further.
Different era before things make it thinner and focused on safety.
Ernie Irvan raced in two different cars this year in his rookie year #56 and #6. Way before the #4 car! My favorite Vintage driver.

I wish it was the Martinsville race from 2007 where Jimmie and Jeff fought for the win, but still Thx u Nascar for this Race.
That was a great race !!! But the one Tony won with that power move on the outside is always overlooked.
Nascar please bring back high HP cars
“We have to fix it just to get it on the truck”. How many times have the local short track guys had to say that?
Sr making the car extremely wide and then fenced Labonte off of turn 2. Labonte lost his cool and chopped down on Darrell. DW did nothing wrong.
Absolutely.

Just good hard 80s racing at Martinsville no story but a great race.
Old Martinsville is better imo
I guess fault could be given to all three to some degree. Overall good old fashioned racing on a short track
Wow never knew martinsville had grass
There used to be planters on the outside of the walls behind the fence. It was always dressed up.
I miss Eli Gold
Crimson Tide has him now.
Rubbin is racing folks.

Was Martinsville bigger back then? It looks huge
Hasn't changed since 1950 except for the concrete on the bottom lane of the turns and the pits reconfigured in the late 90s that eliminated the backstretch pit. Sort of made the track look different.
