My mom met James Karen on the subway, the "F" train, in NYC back in the '70s. She immediately recognized him as 'the Pathmark guy', and he smiled back at her. Nice guy! ;-)
A&P is celebrating their 150th Anniversary this year, so they must be doing something right. Pathmark and Shop-Rite were both part of the same company way back in the 70's. They split apart some 30 years ago.
I remember PathMark, and I still remember the commercials. And speaking of PathMark, I heard the sad news is that James Karen, the spokesperson for the PathMark commercials has died today. He was 94 years old. He has been appeared in all of PathMark commercials for so many years. I hope we will be joining the "MTN Gang" in future episodes. RIP: James Karen 😰
Up until recently, one of the stores near me still had "You're the one who's number 1" painted on the wall in the room in the back near the bathrooms but it was painted over about a month ago. At least we still have some trailers that say "SHOP SMART" that haven't been repainted.
@@Mato1970 One movie he played Frank. He worked at a morgue or something like that. Then he play another character that had a different name but basically the same guy.
this was my family's supermarket in south hempstead ny until they recently closed and are replacing it with a returning key food supermarket so many memories of going to pathmark growing up great store
Wow I haven't seen this commercial since I was four years old but I always remembered it so vividly! Pathmark was a great supermarket once. Now, in my area, they're getting massacred by a new Walmart that just went up earlier this year. There are three Pathmarks within short driving distance of me and none of them are doing well. A real shame.
I heard that! They talked about the time he guest starred on the Jeffersons as the racist guy who Sherman Haelmsley had to give mouth to mouth resuscitation. The classic line was when Karen's character upon finding out a black man saves his life..."you should have let me die". LOL
Does that mean that Pathmark supermarkets are haunted? Well there are 3 former Pathmark stores in Northern New Jersey that are still empty meaning that no other supermarket chain so far are not interested in these 3 Northern New Jersey former Pathmark locations. And they are 2 in Hackensack,NJ one on Hackensack Avenue and the other one on Route 17. The 3rd location still closed & empty is on Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn,NJ
I missed those super coupon bonanzas from the late 80s. I am glad to see that under A&P the Pathmark sav-a-center rebrand is bringing back store coupons in the circular, in the super saver booklet, and in the Simply Savings magazine. Pathmark has always been a great store, but they have been a bit mismanaged. It has always been my supermarket of choice for its prices. Seeing how well they did with the Waldbaums chain, I am betting that A&P will take a while, but eventually they will pull it off.
@tbyrne706 It was only around 2008 when all of the Pathmarks in my area stopped being open 24 hours a day. I once had to go into Pathmark at 1 AM after arriving home from a really late flight.
@RETROGEMS The "F" train has West 9th Street at Smith in Brooklyn as one of the stops, just a block or two from the PathMark there at the Gowanus Canal.
i saw the he recieved hate mail by people telling him they'd never shop pathmark again because of how he treated the freelings from poltergeist. and some folks actually wrote to Sherwood Schwartz asking him why no one was trying to rescue the castaways on the island. never underestimate the stupidity of some folks.
@@JediPeaceFrog Democrats are not that stupid--the only stupid ones voted for Trump. In Orson Welles War of the Worlds Republicans were the ones who thought the world was coming to an end and the world was being invaded by aliens from out of space. That is how believable that 1938 radio show was.
Mr. Teague was unaware that poltergeists were gonna unearth their physical earthly bodies into Pathmark Stores nationwide. THEY MOVED THE MILK AND EGGS, BUT THEY LEFT THE BODIES!!!! WHYYYYYYYY?????
Well working in a store doesn't really give you a proper perspective of the corporate structure. A&P saved Pathmark from bankruptcy and is giving it some cool rebranding.
He was also in Return of the Living Dead. We used to laugh at work that the guy from Pathmark was in that movie and I would get a reply that some of the employees of Pathmark were the Return of the Living Dead.
@smartbunny no i am not 10 years old...but i have years of experience in the supermarket industry...both as an insider and as an investor...and the acquistion of Pathmark by A&P was a very sad event...Pathmark was an industry leader...even Shop-Rite shuddered when Pathmark broke a big sales circular...as far as A&P rebranding...they are currently rebranding A&P stores in Pennsylvania...to the name Pathmark...the one guy who might have pushed A&P forward was Mike Larkin...he died too young
A&P / Pathmark keep saying how they are bringing back a lot of things from years ago. How about they bring back this guy? That would be awesome!! What's that boycott about? I never heard of that. Great guy, and great supermarkets.
Recently A & P Bought Pathmark. Believe it or not Pathmark went Chapter 11.I guess too much competition. If you go to Pathmark today, they have the America's Choice Brand which is sold at A & P.
I remember this guy. I see now his name is James Karen. But what ever happened to the woman who used to do the ads with him at first? I think her name was Ruth Kovell. Not sure on the spelling.
I recall seeing PathMark ads on WNJU/WXTV also, *en español,* of course. The announcer in those ads looked like Mr. Karen as well. "PathMark... La Bodega Grande." Anyone have the ads in Spanish, please? *Gracias.*
I'm sorry to disagree with you ddoggs2008 but any Shop Rite I've ever walked into has been a filthy and disorganized mess. I've never seen a clean floor in the place. In my mind if the floors are filthy it doesn't say much for the cleanliness of the produce etc. or dedication of the employees.
I saw James Karen walking on Broadway but I wasn't sure it was him and then a fan ran up to him and I heard that familiar voice and realized that it was him and I said, Hello Mr. Pathmark and he said ;" My name is MR. JAMES KAREN TO YOU YOUNG MAN!"I pissed him off....To me he'll always be Mr. Pathmark..
A&P...does not know how to run a business...they are not competent...and hire the worst managers...i have been in the supermarket business for many years...ps...how many more Pathmarks will A&P shutdown...
@alloutoftime this is the reason why ObAMA MUST BE IMPEACHED and or voted out of office in 2012 WE NEED Ssweeping social reform now. the proliferation of these derelicts must be tackled on. I hope the tea party wins throughout America send a message to these derelicts their days of free loading are over!
I am from the future. Obama was never impeached despite having Republican majorities in both houses of Congress. His successor however was twice impeached. You'll have to figure that one out for yourself who he was. LOL
Rest in peace James Karen...you were a great familiar face in these commercials during my childhood.
I know right...
My mom met James Karen on the subway, the "F" train, in NYC back in the '70s. She immediately recognized him as 'the Pathmark guy', and he smiled back at her. Nice guy! ;-)
RIP to the PathMark man, James Karen

I met him one night while walking down the street in NYC. He was very cool.
R.I.P. Mr. Karen. A great actor, and fellow antique radio collector
I remember these commercials when I was a kid visiting my aunt and uncle in New Jersey. Here's to the Garden State!

RIP James Karen, gonna watch Return of The Living Dead, 1 and 2 in your honor. :(
He was in those movies? Who did he play? How did I miss that?
James Armato He was one of the leading actors in both those films.
James Karen as his character mr. -"Bill" Pathmark is recognizable in the commercials

As mentioned by cbsfm101 this man is James Karen. He co-starred in 1985 film 'Return Of The Living Dead' as 'Frank'.
How cool would that be if Pathmark used him again. I wish they would. Great voice, Great guy, and GREAT SUPERMARKET!!!
to the Pathmark in the sky.... and in my heart SOBBBBB he was my favorite RIP

That was a fun movie and great opening scenes with James Karen.
Rest in peace, James Karen.
The great James Karen. What an entertaining guy. How can you not love the guy
RIP! Great actor.
The Pathmark gig put "Cousin Jimmy" on the map; no one could have done it any better.
The rest of the family called him "Tinch." We did not.
Rest In Peace Legend. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓 We'll never forget you.
That's James Karen. Just met him on the TCM Classic Cruise. Great guy. Super funny.
this was when commercials were good
I miss the Pathmark on Staten Island on Hylan Boulevard miss those times
James Karen just recently showed up on Gilbert Gottfried's podcast. Great interview.

Hey look it's the shady real Estate guy from Poltergeist...he forgot to move the bodies. They only moved the HEADSTONES!
all pathmarks are built on old cemeteries.

I used to look at the grocery ads in the Sunday NY Daily News every weekend, pretend I was a grown-up and create my very own grocery shopping list ☺️
To those not familiar, James Karen was one of the zombies in Return of the Living Dead part 1 and 2! He was AWESOME!!
I see the price of boxed OJ hasn't changed much.
They turned the Pathmark by me to an Ocean StateJob Lot. Pathmark was fun to shop at, my grandparents aleays bought the Pathmark Assortement Cookies
Love these prices.

Interesting, I wasn't around in 1978, so thanks.
For a while, Beatrice owned so many things.. their tag line on commercials was a female voice saying “we’re Beatrice”... funny the stuff you remember
Beatrice used to own Tropicana until it got sold to Pepsi in the 90s
Oh yeah---I remember that!!
Its not a bad question Burt
Whats a beatrice Tropicana?
Which A&P's are they closing?
is the actor in these pathmark comm,s the newscaster known as John Chancellor?
No, it's James Karen. Look him up on IMDB, you've seen him in tons of films.
No but funny you say that because he could pass as John's brother.
James Karen..was in Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster...yeck...that was dreck...
