DX Chogokin Jet Icarus! DX 超合金 ジェットイカロス!
Jetman is a favorite series of many people. It's easy to see why. The designs were great, the action was great, and there was a deep story. Bandai, however, didn't hold the series as dear to it's heart as they probably should have. Not many people realize this, but toy quality for Bandai dramatically tanked between 1989-1991. Rather than being a victim of design, the following toy was ruined by it's maker...
Jet Icarus is the resulting combination of five Jets. They are...
1. Jet Hawk
2. Jet Swan
3. Jet Owl
4. Jet Swallow
5. Jet Condor
1. ジェットホーク
2. ジェットスワン
3. ジェットオウル
4. ジェットスワロー
5. ジェットコンドル
They can be combined into an additional mode called Icarus Harken ( イカロスハーケン) using the command "Gattai! Jet Scram! (合体! ジェットスクラム!). In that mode, it can combine with the later mecha, Jet Garuda's (ジェットガルーダ) Bird Garuda ( バードガルーダ) mode, to become Hyper Harken (ハイパーハーケン) using the command "Gattai! Harken Scram! (合体! ハーケンスクラム!).
All five Jets can combine to form Jet Icarus (ジェットイカロス) using the command "Gattai! Scram Wing! (合体! スクラムウイング!)". Jet Icarus comes with the Birdonic Sabre (バードニックセイバー) sword as well as the Wing Shield (ウィングシールド). In addition to this, the underside of Jet Owl can be used as a cannon and the fists fire using a spring loaded mechanism. As a side item, a small puzzle of Jet Icarus was included with the toy.
So what's so bad about this toy? For starters...it's incredibly boxy. I mean, it was just coming off the 80s...but Bandai has made slick looking mecha prior to this. This toy was designed with a ruler and nothing else. The quality is tragic. It's hard to really see how flimsy it is through the video, but there is the constant risk of it breaking everytime you combine it. You can kinda see in the video how the shoulders droop down when it's combined as Jet Icarus. I'm fairly certain that's NOT supposed to happen. The stickers! So many of them! This is a on-going complaint I have about toys from this era. Oddly enough this isn't the worst offender, that'd be Dairenoh. I have one last complaint...
Chogokin??? Yeah right! There is hardly any metal on this toy AT ALL. This is the last Sentai Mecha since 1975 to carry the Chogokin label on it. A lot of people tend to think that Chogokin died with Zyuranger...they're wrong. This mecha is the death of Chogokin toys for Super Sentai. If you really want to consider this toy to be Chogokin...this is a sad, sad sendoff to an era of truly excellent mecha.
Imagine if Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers DID end up on American TV as planned using Jetman footage. That means Bandai America would've had a shot at making this mecha and even worse Megazord. Hahaa.
