Aside from the Death Korp or Krieg I can't say I know know imperial guard units that I'm more proud of...however the steel Legion are definitely one of them.
Late answer: He doesn't want it. He was actually offered retirement multiple times, even offered effectively a paradise world to command over. He refused because of his hatred of Orks. He would not stop until Gazgull was dead, and at this point, he's practically immortal (he's around 125 years old, but is physically less than 60). He's the unofficial Ork God of Death and Fear.

Thats the reason that Gork and Mork keep having Orks go back there- as well as why it was the center of their empire and why they are not able to reach theit Beast level threat again. After their planet was taken, the imperium wanted to destroy it but the mechanicus squirelled it away- assuming that the orks would not have any way of finding it because orks. It is the homeworld, and that is why, for example, three whole legions including the Lunar Wolves needed the Emperor himself to save them. All orks on ullanor are naturally more deadly. Imagine a planet of Orks- where the snotlings are actually stronger and smarter than your average ork. The orks of that planet will be even bigger and... As ironic as it may seem.... Smarter. At least tactically. To a level that can rival Horus.

That was the Battle of Gorro, rather than the Ullanor Crusade; Emps was being choked and Horus hacked the offending Ork's arm off. I'm not sure if the Emperor actually saw ground combat on Ullanor, if I'm being totally honest, but there's definitely no mention of him needing saving.
