The building is breathtaking - when you walk in - there is something in the air - hard to describe. Tall ceilings - crisp, fresh air - at 2am on a Friday - there are young people laughing in the lobby. The hallways feel upscale - there are no cooking smells from neighboring units and the floors are solid when you walk down so that you don't hear neighbors walking past your door. Thank you for the Atlas Tour - If you can maybe consider adding "Atlas" to the title I see you've got it in the description - maybe that is good enough? I'm no YT expert - just a viewer.

The walk to Bart and to the Lake is like a video game esp for walking class ppl...def some characters and not worth the price/risk. You sound like a desperate land developer trying to save your illusion/ buidling that didnt successfully genetrify the heart of downtown oakland/ the new detroit.

Excellent review with the Pro's and Con's of living in Downtown Oakland. Very Clear Voice and speed. I'm Retired and considering moving to Downtown Oakland when My Niece's Husband passed away leaving her with a 11 and 13 year old to raise last year. Been looking at Broadway Apartments and Yours. Would like Your feed back on what it's like around the Broadway Apartments - same - better or worse than around Yours?

Astoundingly beautiful complex. I'm a Manhattan exile now living in San Francisco, but I work in Oakland. I'm not certain why you feel Oakland is so challenging -- I lived in the Village, Upper West Side, Harlem, Washington Heights in Manhattan ( I took my degrees at Columbia University during the 1990s, when Manhattan was very rough and ready to shootout), and mon vieux, "dirty streets," "strange homeless people," "gunshots," along with great wealth pretty much defined my Manhattan and still does. And as a New Yorker, you're going to complain about expensive rents for tiny spaces? Monsieur, PU-LEEZE.
Don't get me started on Brooklyn....But the grit goes along with the glam, and that's what makes great cities. Or have you not read the likes of Dickens and Balzac and their main characters, London and Paris? So, while I work in San Francisco -- no stranger to "strange homeless," "dirty streets," "gunshots," "expensive spaces"--I have come to love Oakland's lively downtown: its multicultural art/performance galleries, jazzy bars, rakish restaurants, raffish coffee houses; the beautiful lakeside neighborhoods around Lake Merritt, and hillside nabes with their architecturally unique, beautiful mansions, estates, as well as subtle woodsy retreats, all in vertiginous, often forested landscapes. I wish you well, but, nah, I'll take Oakland ANY day over the suburban "Get Out!" to which you strive.

@@rubenponders : Indeed, mon vieux. I'm a Northern English-Latinx biracial, and I have lived and worked on both coasts, in Britain (of course), and France, the most consequential Latin country in the world, for better or worse. It's the cities that have given my education, my work, and my place and identity, as cities since antiquity -- we're talking Hellenic, Roman, African, Asian --have ALWAYS been multicultural and, well, complex.
Oakland is a great city, one that exerts influence far beyond its size, and the one California city that reminds me most of NYC -- in that, I think we can agree: like NYC, it is diverse, complex, wealthy, gritty, beautiful, ragged, cosmopolitan, "bougie," down-and-out, charmed, edgy: a set of contradictions. I wish you well and much success in your search for home. And I thank you for the intimate view of your very beautiful high rise complex: I know it well, as it's right across the street from the Tribune Restaurant, a wonderful bistro. The nabe has such a very Manhattan vibe -- expensive housing, sophisticated nightlife, "dirty streets," "strange" and "homeless," as well as sophisticated, cultured citizens such as, well, YOU. Abide, monsieur: I'll dig on Oakland, as its contradictions are that which mirror my own: home, at last!

@@trixie9867 : Nope. The racist cliche that all of Oakland is under a hail of bullets belongs to White people circa 1965 -2005. The gentleman in question finds downtown Oakland "challenging," and I can respect his personal views, as he lives in a beautiful space in a busy downtown, which has crime events as does any other downtown in any major city in the world.
But one can live almost entirely free of "gunshots" in such Oakland neighborhoods as Montclair, Oakmore, Rockridge, Sequoyah, Crocker Highlands, etc, etc., and those neighborhoods feature large homes (and quite a few mansions and gated estates), with large yard spaces.
So what that these neighborhoods are exceptionally expensive; so is downtown/"Uptown" Oakland.
The point stands: your implicit extolling of White suburbs, themselves a literal construct of American racism dating back to the late nineteenth century, is based on the aforementioned falsehood, and however civilly you might advance your false thesis, its very falseness is quite uncivilized, unhelpful, and rightfully unappreciated.

@@montymason1647 i'm sorry. I sense so much anger in you. Ruben just wants a peaceful place to lay his head and a place he feels safe to have a wife and kids. He mentioned his dog is even uneasy. I never said 'all of Oakland... bullets.' Ruben mentioned somebody shot in the building and somebody shot across the street. What you said is false though. There are some downtown areas in the world that have less crime. Also neither Ruben nor I suggested suburbs was the answer.

I live in SF and paying $3400 for an apt in Oakland is laughable these landlords are so greedy, not even cause Oakland is always like Gotham city with multiple killings a week, people getting robbed in broad daylight and the mayor just got arrested last week. these landlords charge crazy rent! I was raised in a pretty gritty neighborhood in SF & not scared to go out to any of the unpredictable streets of SF but Oakland f no I will not go. I have seen multiple shootings on the freeway, elderly people getting mugged for their money & jewelry, there’s like no line where these people won’t cross. It’s disgusting and the landlords turn a blind eye charging $2800 for a 1 bedroom, why because they themselves would never live in Oakland. It’s outrageous! not worth risking your life for a place you can’t even feel safe to walk outside

The only ‘hate’ I’ll give you is for saying ‘that building’ is the tallest in Oakland - turns out, it’s not. The tallest building in Oakland is actually the Ordway building, a whole foot taller at 404 feet than the building you used to live in, which is 403 feet tall. 😊 I happen to know this because I am in part responsible for maintaining that particular Wikipedia page which chronicles the tallest buildings in Oakland. Everything else I completely agree with - I used to live in that same building on a different floor than you did and moved out about the same time you did. It’s very sad that neighborhood was such a difficult place to feel safe in. I don’t have much hope things will improve there as far as safety is concerned, and since I moved away I have found it continues to have very serious problems with all the things you mentioned in your video. I hope you’re enjoying your new home; I am far happier where I landed as well.
