  • This project was a challenge!!
    Welcome to the longest video edit and biggest upload I've created.
    Everyday that I wake up I'm sooo freakn thankful I get to do this. Restoring vintage furniture and bringing clients ideas to life all the while living and playing in New Zealand is a dream.
    Doing it from my home in Turangi is the icing on the cake.
    This restoration took alot out of me. It was in pretty bad shape, the deeper I went the more problems I found and needed to rectify.
    It was hot and nearly xmas, so my motivation and energy was also tested.
    But here we are ..... DONE ....
    Check it out and don't hesitate to let me know what you think.

    You are part architect, part artist, part engineer, part tailor, and your work is impressive. I wish i had watched this before i tried to reupholster a chair! It was a fail, miserably, but when i feelbrave enough again ill review this video....for which i thank you!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    Looks great. I would have chosen a deco inspired fabric if it were mine, but you did a fabulous job on it.

    I’m an interior designer and have had many projects done by upholders over the years, sometimes re styling when appropriate. Quality work like yours includes new foam and Dacron as well as fabric and your magic on putting it all together for another go at 15 to 20 years of life. I find that reupholstering costs pretty close to 80% of the cost of a comparable replacement, but often the quality of construction is not as good as the original. Choosing to give this Art Deco love seat a new life would definitely be something I would suggest doing if a client doubted the value in doing so.
    That old expression always holds true “no one ever regrets buying quality”.

      Typo error… first line should be ‘upholsterers’

    • @DMWinterburn
      @DMWinterburn  Před 4 měsíci +11

      Hello there fellow pro. Yes I absolutely agree, if I had it my way I would always replace and restore to the highest level. As you well know this is where the clients budget comes in to play. At the same time I am happy to keep foam in place if its in great condition and has had very little use. Save the planet - hug a tree. D

      @nickadamson6053 Před 4 měsíci +3

      Most new stuff is not worth anywhere close to what it costs and there is insane margins in furniture (at least it is the case in the US). You have to spend a lot of money to get close to the quality of pieces like this. The junk I have seen behind the dust cloth... *shudders*

    • @DMWinterburn
      @DMWinterburn  Před 4 měsíci +3

      @@nickadamson6053 I absolutely agree. The amount of fantastic high quality vintage furniture out there boggles my mind. The only hurdle is access to raw materials and the skills to work them. All can be learned! D

    Foam was popular 30/ 40 years ago it doesn’t age well and can go dusty and develops a smell , patience is so important when stripping down a frame . Screws should be used to attach the base , it’s a pleasure to see your beautiful workmanship

    i was in the boat that i would have chosen a different fabric, but then i heard you say it was for a client and i understand haha. i was a bit confused first seeing the upholstery, i thought maybe you were fitting the pattern until i saw you start officially securing it down. you did a good job on it all, not a lot of people out here now with slower style reno videos either !

    my x years ago found that a mouse had gotten into the couch so couldn't get it out so started tearing it apart, right down to the frame. Never fuond the mouse so guess it escaped before the destruction. I just sat on a chair and watched because he was mad and I didn't want to get into that mess. Eventually he went to a friend who built and upholstered furniture for a living. He made what x wanted, not my idea at all. Friend made a bright green velvet three piece sectional. It was ugly!! X and I split later on and I ended up with the main piece of ugly couch. No idea where it is now, probably at the town dump. Years ago. But, you are a craftsperson and I did watch and enjoy. Thanks.

    What a huge project but accomplished magnificently. Art Deco is recognised instantly. Perhaps you should wear a mask when stripping off the old yucky wadding!

      Crazy hot, dusty, scratchy project. Thank you for acknowledging. Yes I agree with you, I don't wear my mask enough. Especially when removing old dusty upholstery. D

    I really enjoyed this. I’m a first-time viewer. For me, since my taste in music is different to yours, I’d appreciate just the shop sounds and slowed down content of you doing it all, even the boring bits!! But that’s just my opinion. I really enjoyed it, thank you.

    That heart chevron fabric reminds me of the late 1940s, it looks like something you'd see on I love Lucy... I can't believe they had you upholstered in beige fabric, such bad taste. Your work looks great, I just can't understand why so many people have zero taste. :)

    • @DMWinterburn
      @DMWinterburn  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I face this decision quite alot with clients. Some are brave and have fun with the fabric and some play it safe. D

      @@DMWinterburn To bad she didn’t pick a good safe color like a French gray or a pale blue, or even ivory white. Patterns on upholstery are better than plain colors since they hide stains bette but having it in only one color certainly looks more fancy. Having your couch be solid taupe or beige are crimes against humanity on a good day. :)
