  • In this video we visit the Reykjavik zoo and family park (Fjölskyldu- og húsdýragarðurinn in Icelandic). We see some of the Icelandic Animals including seals, Icelandic horses, and reindeer. They also have a large play area - perfect place to spend the day for families visiting Reykjavik!
In my opinion this is one of the best places in Reykjavik, Iceland for tourists & travelers because there is so much fun to be had - make sure to add this to your itinerary, come sun or snow!

Calling it a Zoo is a bit of an overstatement. The actual Icelandic name for it is more realistic: The Family and domestic animal garden!
No rare or exotic animals (no Lions, Elephants or Rhinos!), only regular domestic and non-domestic animals to be found here. It certainly is good fun, especially for children raised in an urban environment devoid of traditional animal husbandry. I was born in 1950, my maternal grandfather was a traditional farmer and I got to fully experience that part of Icelandic culture. My children mostly missed that link. My youngest two girls, however, enjoyed a "hobby farmer" maternal grandfather (still going strong at 90-and-a-lot) that has a few sheep and Icelandic horses to enjoy. In hindsight, this connection to the past (and nature in general) is invaluable.

Wo der Feuerberg loht, Glutasche fällt,
    Sturmwogen die Ufer umschäumen,
Auf dir, du trotziges Ende der Welt,
    Die Winternacht wollen wir verträumen🥰❤‍🔥

I think families should vacation in Iceland. My parents took us all over Western Europe back in the day. Priceless.

Are there still no leaves on the trees at this time of year? When do the trees in Iceland start to bud?

I wonder if your infant son had a chance to interact directly with the shaggy Icelandic horses? You will not find more gentle creatures anywhere! They just love little ones!
And - for you 'Muricans out there: The stroller seen carrying her little son is one you would expect to see left outside the restaurant on a busy summer day - with the boy sleeping in it. This is a Nordic thing - our societies are SAFE!

Poor animals. Only concrete and gravel.. :( Too small enclosures with nothing for them to do. The cows are locked in a cage. so sad.. will never go there.
