Thank you for this video, it is very thorough. I've never been a big fan of drawing with graphite or charcoal pencils, but I want to give the oil based pencils a try. Thanks again for all the info. and examples.
My pleasure! Happy to share my favorite stuff with you.
Oh man I love these videos that you make!! I remember I subbed to your channel a long time ago because the first vid I watched was whats inside you pen case vid. We had NO JOKE exactly the same suff in a Smart Fit Lihit lab pencil case, minus the watercolor lol. Literally made me laugh out loud because of how true it was and that we've came to almost the SAME set up on our own research. And lemme tell you I nerd out hard and put A LOT of research in my pens and art supplies. 😅🤣
Right now I still only use my Ahab pens (I know your not a big fan of them) but I roll with 1 Noodlers brush pen, 3 Noodler Ahabs (Black, Sepia, Lexington Grey) and 2 Noodler Creepers (Black and Red) for writing. I keep them in a 6in RickShaw pouch because I use a womens ponytail band to wrap it on my Midori Passport. Its a siccc set up if I dont say so myself. 😊
Im inspired to try that grey Canson!! Thanks for the recommendation! I think you can find it at like Hobby Lobby or Michaels? I think its the ones that are sold almost as poster board size? I might have seen them before there.
Also thank you for going into detail about the Strathmore toned paper!! I know its used for graphite but I use ink on it aswell and I was wondering if other artist would look down upon this or perhaps have a better recommendation for toned paper with ink. Im actually impressed how well your sketchbook held up considering the amount of work you put in it with your graphic novel.
Sorry for the long comment here. Love your work! Have a great day!
Thanks. Great minds think alike. :)
Most of these supplies are pretty well known, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you find either at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. I use pen and ink in those toned paper sketchbooks all the time, since the paper is nice and smooth.
Great video, thanks Mark! A serious graphite/ watercolour sketcher, I have been inspired by your channel already to get my first fountain pen + ink recently (TWSBI ECO + Lexington Grey), and I continue to learn about new materials- now through this video I learnt about conte/ oil based drawing pencils! I am very excited to try conte as a drawing tool and will be looking in to a bunch of your recommendations. Please keep up the great work, you're a wealth of knowledge!

My pleasure! I'm glad that this video, which is a bit of an outlier in my content, was useful to you. I'll be making more videos on dry drawing media, how to use them and combine them, shortly. Fountain pens are great, but if I want to expand my viewership, I need to expand my repertoire!
Tombow Mono Plastic erasers, work WAY better for erasing graphite, as also the Faber Castell 187120 Dust Free, works a bit better with Chalk/oil pencils. Then LYRA makes THE best kneadable eraser and as most of you know, the Tombow Mono Zero 2.3mm is another must have for details!!
Great video as always Marc, keep up the good work!!
That's the wonderful thing about art supplies: no matter how many you try, there's always more out there. Thanks for the recommendations! I will have to try those and make some comparisons.
Thank you for linking to all of the supplies!
You’re welcome!
Hi Marc, as always another detailed and very helpful video! Thank you for posting. Can I request a video sorting through the myriad of papers one could use for pen and ink? … sketchbooks, drawing papers, printmaking papers… I’d like to try some new ones but am baffled where to start. Thanks!
Thank you Sharon. I will be doing a video on papers for pen and ink soon.
@@mkompan Looking forward to it!
You pronounced Rötel petty well. 85% there.
When you roll the R like that it sounds ‘southern’. Nice ö.
85% is not bad. For some reason I forgot that the r’s are not rolled in German.
1. I like to line draw with charcoal, but it is just too messy for me. I'm going to give that FC Pitt Oil Base a try.
2. IMO graphite is useless for a finished drawing unless you can make good, purposeful use of its shininess.
3. Off Topic: I vastly prefer using lead holders (2.1 & 5.6) over wooden pencils, as I don't need a precise point, and they eliminate sharpening altogether. Why does the art community frown upon them? Convince me that they are superior in any way, and I'll happily switch (back) to wood.
4. Great video, thanks.
1. Also try Wolff's carbon, since it's more "charcoal like" but doesn't smear nearly as much.
2. A lot of good sketches have been done in graphite, with Constable's landscape sketches and the portrait drawings of Ingres coming to mind. In both cases the work is fast and light, and I agree, I don't see the point in creating fully rendered drawings in graphite.
3. I use 2mm clutches for graphite. If these materials came in 2mm sticks I would move away from wood, but most of them are too brittle to be that thin. The thicker lead holders are too girthy and clunky for my taste.
4. Thank you kindly!
What's your favorite paper for ink? both sketchbook and finished drawings?
For sketchbook I really like the Talens Art creations sketchbooks, which take pen and ink and other wet media well, and come in a variety of formats. For finished work the Canson Editions, Stonehenge legion, and Arches hot press watercolor paper are excellent.
Canson Editions Wheat color doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Do you have another recommendation for that yellowish Old Masters look?
@@EPeltzer You can also look for Stonehenge Legion paper in the cream color. I love working on it, and it's very similar.
