Great video Dan!! I have always had a hatchet as part of my gear. As a kid I got a hold of a purse from my mom that looked like a mtn man possible pouch and I just had to have it!! I had seen pictures of men like Boone and Crockett and I just had to have one and since the bag I got from her was identical to that, it became my woods tramping bag lol. Anyway, I would load it up with my old Case XX hatchet and my Barlow pocket knife, an old canteen I picked up from some where, I don't remember where, I would throw in some matches and a couple of tomato biscuits and would be in the woods all day exploring like the mtn men or so I thought, to a kids young mind lol!!

That's awesome! I really appreciate you sharing that. Reminded me of when I was young, I absolutely had to have a buckskin jacket with fringes like Fess Parker wore in Daniel Boone. And since my name was Daniel, I pretended to be him. Wore that jacket everywhere, hot or cold ,lol! Thanks for the memory!

Another great video! I also carry and use the Gransfors Hand Hatchet, but I never thought of using it the way you do to make shavings. I have always just used it the same way I use my knife. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you! Depending on your budget, I highly recommend the Gransfors Bruk.

Another great video, Dan. It was nice to see a great demonstration on hatchet use, and a discussion of its benefits. Seems most every reviewer starts off beating their knife through a log of some size. I don’t baton myself, but I understand others doing it. Too much risk of knife damage, to me. But heck, your knife, do what you want. And I fully understand a reviewer demonstrating the skill for others. I also don’t strike spark from a ferro rod with my knife either… a real striker is small and generally works better. Again, just my choice, others should act as they wish.. always wondered how that hot spark affects the knife steel over time, if at all. I like your stuff sir…. Keep up the great job.

What kind of hatchet and how can I sharpen it .

I use the Gransfors Bruk Hand Hatchet. You can get it on Amazon.
To sharpen it I use the same sharpener as on my knives, the Spyderco Sharpmaker. The ceramic rods keep a razor sharp edge on the Hatchet, which is what I like.

I saw someone file the back of their hatchet to a 90 degree spine for use with a ferro rod
