  • Phil Read Elimination round 1 at Perth Motorplex, Jan 29th 2011. 1/4 mile.
    PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE so can do more of these.
    Supercharger blows off and yet another fireball in the second half of the pass.
    Update : 16 April 2020. This CoVid19 stuff is getting me down. You too, probably. I'll start adding Onboard DRAG RACING NITRO videos each day. But I need to get to 1000 subscribers and we're nearly there. If you like what you see, please Subscribe! so I can create some more clips from the archives. Check the one I did today!
    And watch this please : • One Weekend in Novembe...
    It's long, but it's super loud in the middle if you want to jump ahead : Heaps of super slow-mo nitromethane action, tyre-shake, engine explosions - really worth seeing if you like NITRO.
    By the way, Phil's next pass was more steady and much faster - 311mph (501kph) in a virtual dead heat with Phil Lamattina. 4.806 vs 4.808. Eliminated by two thousandths of a second.
    Thanks for watching everyone.

      Anders Kristensen F1 motors was _limited_ to 18krpm and before limitation rpms was like 18-20krmp. I think idle was and is around 4000-7000krpm. Next season fuel flow limitation maxes rpms to around 12-13krpm. Not 100% sure about the numbers, i'll stand corrected.

    When the throttle is floored, a switch is operated, starting the pre-set timers for everything. There is a multi-plate clutch, which is gradually engaged as the car runs, only locking up at about half to two-thirds track. The power output from the engine is controlled by varying the ignition timing and the amount of fuel fed to the engine, by diverting some back to the tank. We have the fuel pressure set to 50psi for the burnout, and it actually runs around 600psi.

  • @harley333man
    @harley333man Před 12 lety

    Yes, and more. At idle only the injectors just above and below the supercharger are used, and they work constantly. The lever is used to adjust the fuel pressure, to limit flow, and to avoid opening valves which allow fuel to the injectors in the cylinder heads. Excess fuel at idle cools the cylinders, and can lead to them not firing, hence cylinders going out early in the run. By running leaner, the cylinders stay hot. Pressure possibly the middle reading on the right hand side.

  • @lw216316
    @lw216316 Před 8 lety +22

    I had a bike that was rated 11.0 sec at 125.
    I never raced it but when I got on the gas
    it felt like I was going to fly off the end of the world
    and it was all I could do to not be pulled off the seat.
    Before this video I watched a go pro view on a dragster make a 6 sec run at just over 200.
    That seemed incredibly fast compared to my bike.
    Then I watched this video at 4.8 252 and it made the 6 sec 200 look slow.
    So it is beyond my imagination what a 4 sec 330 run would be like.
    I don't see how they can control the car.
    I guess that's why they get paid the big bucks.
    The first time you make a run like that it must seem like you are going to die
    because your brain is telling you there is no way you can stop before
    you get to the end of the track.

    Just before going into full stage, Phil pulls the fuel mixture from lean to rich. You can hear the engine note deepens and the revs drop a bit. I don't think it reflects on the dash. When fuel injectors are spraying as hard as garden hoses, it's hard to meter the fuel quantity precisely. But you don't want to risk flooding the cylinders and causing a hydraulic lock-up. I might be quite wrong, but that's why I understand they have a 'lean' setting up to the last possible second.

  • @duflar
    @duflar Před 12 lety

    Also the lever is set at half for the burnout, that’s plenty of power to spin the tires and get them sticky. The clutch is tuned to just pull the car when the you release the pedal and they hold it back with the hand break. They roll into the line and as soon as they stage that lever goes full on. As soon as the driver sees the yellow light up they mash the throttle pedal down and move from the hand break to the steering wheel and hold on. This is where the clutch man earns his pay.

  • @VoidSixx

    Noob question: Why don't top fuel dragsters build revs to launch like regular drag cars? Is it something to do with them using multiple clutch plates instead of transmission? (Or something like that, I can't remember exactly)

    • @minigungaming5915
      @minigungaming5915 Před 6 lety

      VoidSixx Because they would explode very, very quickly. They only use 1000 feet for top fuel since a full 1320 (1/4 mile) was too dangerous

    • @samuelbottger972
      @samuelbottger972 Před 5 lety +4

      no drive system on the planet could withstand a top fuel motor dumping all of its power in one go like a pro stock, and it would be pointless. at the start of the run every single clutch plate is slipping so only about 1/10th of the power is actually going to the rear wheels, (and even at that they still smoke the tires at launch regularly) plus you cant run a top fuel motor at full power for any length of time what-so-ever, the only reason they can do a burnout is because they are running half the fuel they would normally run in a pass, when you see him push that lever all the way forward to his left, thats him turning on the second fuel pump. you can actually hear the engine tone get deeper as it starts to run richer. any longer than 4 seconds and the engine is guaranteed to blow up. sometimes they let loose in less than 4 ;)

  • @grumpystu
    @grumpystu  Před 12 lety +1

    @RIPSTOPPA Engine explosion. Blew the supercharger off. At the end when Phil looks at the smoking remains of his motor, you can see the blower is askew. All good though. Couple of hours - good as new.

    • @stuartgreaves4539
      @stuartgreaves4539 Před 10 lety +6

      Hi Alex
      The lever one on the right is a handbrake. You pull back to stop the thing rolling. It 'drags' all the time, so to speak. On the left is mixture control - you use it to regulate idle, then pull back to full-rich just before launch. Otherwise the thing can 'fuel up' and flood, so to speak. The one on the far right is the parachute release. The throttle is a normal right foot pedal.

    • @sanfranciscobay

    Yes, but the way I understand it - electronics manage the gradual feeding of the power to the drivetrain through a series of clutches. These are often timer-based and pneumatically actuated. The art is in programming how progressively that power is delivered - based on changing weather and track condition. Note that the burnout is done with a throttle-stop in place - set at 10% throttle. More than enough to frighten the kiddies.

    Explosion from the motor behind Phil as the supercharger separates from the manifold. The flames do have a habit of going forward into the cockpit.
