  • This video gives a brief introduction to Trio Mandili in 40 seconds. Therefore, do not expect details, the video is more suitable to be used in presentations. If there is a mistake, for example in a year, please comment. The video has no commercial intentions, even if CZcams should place ads, none of this benefits me.

I will write some here because I know somewhat two of the girls who created Trio Mandili and a third who played and singed in the 2016 version of the Trio. The original trio formed comprised Shorena Tsiskarauli, Ana (Ani / Anuki) Chincharauli and Lela Eremashvili Kavkazka. The name Mandili was an idea of Shorena's mother Diana who had dreamed that this name would bring them luck and fame. Tatia (Tatuli) Mgeladze who already sang by herself was later taken on as replacement for Lela, about the time when they registered their famous road video Apareka. That was the beginning of their real fame when, within a few days, they got more than a million views on CZcams from several countries around the world, on 5 continents. What triggered the most curiosity is the fact that they looked Europeans, yet nobody had no clue as to which language they were speaking, which sounded strange and incomprehensible to most anybody, including Georgians themselves, since they were actually singing, as the story goes, in Khevsuri, a Georgian Kavkaz dialect spoken only in a very little mysterious and little known country hidden within the high peaks and deep valleys of Georgian Kavkaz, highest mountain range in Europe. So this rare language is understood only by those few thousands people living in or originating from this small country, name Khevsureto. Therefrom, the girls signed a contract with Slavian producer Rotislav Maslovitch, possibly Russian or Ukrainian, and his company / associates. They started to appear on television shows and travelled for concert tours in several European countries. By 2016, Anuki had to leave for personal reasons and was replaced by Elene Nareshemashvili, a Shorena good friend who could sing and was good panduri player. The group apparently broke up by the end of 2016. Several tentative explanations were put forward to make up for this separation, although it is difficult to tell the real truth from the pure hypothesis. I tell you what makes more sense to me. Some of the girls wanted more free time for their personal lives and to pursue their studies at higher level, which would give them other options in life, but at the same time the producer wanted to increase the pace of shows and concert tours, so it probably became difficult to negotiate a working compromise. For more than two years, the three girls had spent a lot of time together, like 6 to 12 hours a day, most every day of the week. That was probably not always easy and we may understand that some small disagreements may have happened now and then and made it more difficult to keep on with good harmony like a united group. Some time after the split up, Tatuli, who probably agreed more with the ambitions of the producer to make it big time, decided to resume the trio activities. Some say that she wanted a leading role in the group, which then came natural since she was now alone. That is when they then hired Tako Tsiklauri and Irina Midelauri. Irina left somewhere in 2017, shen she was pregnant and gave birth to her first baby. She was replaced by Mariam / Mari / Maria Qurasbediani, but came back at least once to substitute Tatuli who was then unable to perform for some reason. Without their leader, the three girls made it to give very good shows. I must say I like all girls very much. They all sing well. Tatia speaks more and acts as animator and presentator in their shows and videos. Tako sings well, is cute and very comic. Mariam is a good panduri player and extraordinarily beautiful. However, nobody can understand Mandili story without first aknowledging the predominant role played by Shorena and Anuki. Shorena is the soul and real founder of the trio with Anuki. You can get to know them since they resumed singing as a trio with a different name: Trio Lavdila. Shorena is expressive, very emotional and comic, extremely sympathic person in real life. Anuki is a splendid artist, a dreamer, very talented and inspiring person, but clearly more introvert than Shorena. Their new trio is completed by Elene Nareshemashvili who was in Mandili, in 2016. I could say that Elene is the ''head'' of the trio, keeping them together and taking care of down to earth chores like the CZcams chain, concerts organisation, etc... So to have a complete vision and understanding of their history, you must look for old videos from 2013 to 2016, when they were Shorena, Anuki and Lela, then with Tatuli, later with Elene. For instance, you may look for ''Old Mandili'' videos. The old Mandili girls are really wonderful persons and I am so happy that I got to meet them and know them better. They have changed my life for the best and probably did still more on a few occasions.

Hello Mr Laurent, would you agree to that, although the role of Elene Nareshemashvili isn’t recognised here?
The Trio Mandili was formed in August 2014, when 19-year-old Tatuli Mgeladze sang the song "Apareka" during a walk with panduri accompaniment while on vacation with two friends and recorded it with her cell phone. The panduri is a three-stringed Georgian long-necked lute, i.e. a kind of mandolin. Tatuli then uploaded the rather shaky recording to CZcams on the channel she set up in June 2012. At first, little happened, but after a few days the song went "viral," reaching the million-song mark in less than two weeks. Friends Ana Chincharauli, Tatuli Mgeladze and Shorena Tsiskarauli were subsequently invited to appear on radio and television shows and performed in concerts in Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Shorena's mother found a catchy name for the newly formed group in a dream: "Trio Mandili". As of 2015, the group were represented by the Russian manager Rostislav Maslovich and released a first CD "With love".
In late summer 2016, after a tour to Russia, the trio split up: Tatuli Mgeladze stayed behind with the rights to Trio Mandili, while Ana and Shorena took up studies in Tbilisi and a year later founded the group "Trio Lavdila". For Shorena came Tako Tsiklauri and for Ana Irina Midelauri. With the song "Ai Dunia," the new Trio also immediately scored a real hit: to date, the video has been viewed more than 15 million times.
And with this momentum, the Trio Mandili applied to participate as a Georgian group in the European Song Contest at the beginning of 2017 with the specially composed song "Me da shen" in the national Georgian selection process. The 12th place out of 25 participants was disappointing, with the group doing very well with the professional jury but miserably in the television audience poll. To this day, there are excited debates among fans as to whether the Trio had competed with the incorrectly arranged song, were "taken for a ride" or were unfortunate losers to the strong national competition with the public.
Subsequently, the group devoted more time to the creation of CZcams videos, went to concerts several times a year in a total of ten different European countries, and in 2017 released their second CD "Enguro". There was another upheaval in 2018, when Irina Midelauri left the trio due to pregnancy and child rearing. In her place came the talented young Panduri player Mariam Kurasbediani in the summer of 2018.
With the outbreak of the Corona pandemic in early 2020, the group's concert activities ended almost completely, except for a short trip to a folklore music festival in Corsica in the summer of 2021 and a short concert at the PIN Music Conference in Skopje (northern Macedonia) in November 2021. During this time, the group was enormously productive musically. Thus, the third CD "Sakartvelo" was released in December 2021. The Trio also released a new song on CZcams almost every weekend, including the song "Kakhuri“ in April 2021, which was played up and down for weeks in countries like Bangladesh and Nepal. The reward was a multiplication of subscribers: At the beginning of September 2021, the Trio Mandili had more than 1 million global subscribers on CZcams for the first time.

@@rubengopro Wow ! Congratulations Mr. Ruben, you did a good job here and while I cannot now check every date, detail and fact, most of it sounds pretty accurate. If your sources are trustworthy, it must be so. To the best of my knowledge, the first Trio's name was Mandili BEFORE Tatuli joined them, BUT I should check again with the girls to be really sure and totally positive in that respect. I have just one objection here: Why don't you want to acknowledge Elene's participation in the trio's activities for about one whole year? Elene is a great personality and artist and her contribution deserves recognition. Another comment. It is not completely surprising that the girls got low in popular vote for their try at Eurovision participation. I explain. In Georgia, there are a lot of very deft artists in traditional Georgian folk music, professional musicians with great vocal ability and excellent playing technique on music instruments. So Georgians have a tendency to be picky eclectic in their appreciation of Trio Mandili and Trio Lavdila performances, always looking down because they compare them to the very best which is a fundamental injustice, because those girls started as teenagers, singing and playing panduri for fun and without any prior formal musical education. I will add that as a fan, I consider that real popular traditional folk music is the music of everyday, singed and played by everyone, spontaneously, by the ordinary people and NOT by professionally trained, educated musicians rehearsing for long hours every day and performing on big stages for the last 30 or 40 years. But the girls are very poipular OUTSIDE Georgia, abroad, all over the world and on 5 continents. They contributed more to share Georgian traditional songs and spread them across the world than all of the professional Georgian folk musicians. They contributed more to make their country and its original powerful culture being known outside than most any other Georgian alive.

@@yoseflaurent3376 Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I totally agree about your comment concerning how the girls entered into the music scene as non-professional trained everyday teenagers. I think part of their worldwide success is their ability to use modern communication technology like CZcams. Regarding Elene‘s role I simply don’t know much. I‘ve seen on CZcams an old video from August 2014 (a month before „Apareka“) about a very small concert with maybe 20 or 30 audience in a very rural Georgian valley. The cast was already Ana, Shorena and Tatuli. I‘m not aware what the name of the group was then. So I think that Elene must have left even earlier. But maybe the group’s creation was not straightforward but somehow chaotic so it was sometime Tatuli and another time Elene. The beginnings of the group are poorly documented. And even today the Trio avoids the public. Meanwhile, it is also clear to me why. There are topics the Trio better not talk about if they don't want to turn a part of their fans against them.

@@rubengopro Yes, it was my pleasure to help whatever I can do. I forgot to write that their public, from the very start had liked the fact that they were simple girls having fun, unpretentious, doing their music as it came to them, spontaneously, the public liked their freshness, their being so young and beautiful and funny, and cute, different from whatever we had ever seen before. They invented their own way of shooting videos outside, walking as they sing and play panduri. As for Elene, I could provide you with several old Mandili videos where you will see her. @@rubengopro I will add that I think that presently, all six girls (New Mandili and Lavdila) are really somewhat scared and disturbed by what is going on in Ukraine. Russians and Ukrainians have been good public for them from the beginning and they gave shows in both countries so this fighting between brothers is womewhat uncanny. Mariupol is just 800 km from Tbilissi and Georgia's neighbour to the north is Russia AND Georgia had known a short war with Russia in 2008 with some bombing getting close to capital city Tbilissi, when the girls were barely 10 to 12 years old, yet mature enough to perfectly understand those were no fireworks. Happily, this war lasted but a few days and a ceasefire was concluded and holds on up to this day, but the present fighting in Ukraine brings back bad memories and triggers new fears. Let's pray that all of this ends pretty soon.
