Great intuitive video!!! I just bought the a7ii five days ago used and in great shape for $600 and I absolutely love this camera! I'm a still's shooter so it's perfect for me!
That's such a nice deal! What's your Instagram account then I can check your shots :)
Thinking about buying it for street photography, the sensor tempts me, since i have a Panasonic G7 and that sensor is way to small for when it get's dark.
i just got an a7ii. its full frame, has ibis (good for handheld low shutterspeed shots), has good hdr (way more flexible editing in lightroom), good in low light, has a alot of custom buttons. the autofocus sucks but you can just use the flexispot mode when in doubt. its good value.
You're going to have a great time with it! I didn't had issues with the autofocusing tho
@@GaryJahman ya i might be overreacting ill have to keep using it
@@michaelele5196 no worries! it slightly depends on the lens as well
Bought two of them new for about $895 or $995 when they had a deal on Adorama and B&H a few months ago. Spent the real money on Gmaster glass. To me it is a silly debate because they are just lightboxes. Good entry-level camera or a workhorse for real estate, landscape, stock. For weddings and video applications there is a good reason for upgrading.
So true! Thanks for the additional information on this video, really appreciate it
I’ve had the a7ii for over a year and for stills it works great! Only place it really struggles is in continuous af.
Yes it's a really great camera! I didn't had real issues with continuous autofocus actually. It's not the fastest but quite decent 😃
Gary Jahman I should clarify. The continuous af is decent. I’ve found that the continuous af is the only big downside with the camera from a stills shooting perspective.
Update your firmware.
Leuk filmpje! lijkt me een mooie camera voor portrait fotos!
Hey Sander, ja zeker!
Great video, really looking at this for my first full frame camera. Been looking at the canon Rp and the Nikon z5. Which one do you think would be the better buy
Thanks!
Personally, I think I would go with either the Canon or Nikon as both have a more modern feeling (touch screen, eye autofocus etc). And they have adapters so that you can also use there older DSLR lenses which can be cheaper than buying new Sony lenses.
But I would strongly advise you to hold all three of them in your hands to see which one feels better in your hands. This can be a very decisive factor sometimes 😉
Thank you for replying, was put off the canon by people slating the dynamic range and the Nikon seems to be great but unable to hold during the current restrictions over here. Many reviews say the Sony a7ii does more than the canon rp which is so confusing
@@andrew107 Yeah it really depends on what your purpose is. The flexibility of a Sony file is just truly great. But if your exposure is spot on with the Canon then you do have a great image. With high dynamic range images, the Sony is still the better option.
Straight out of camera though, the Canon is actually better than the Sony. JPEG files that is
@@GaryJahman I had given up on the Canon due to not having any lenses and also wanted IBS, have seen a used A7II in excellent condition for £749 for the body and the 28-70mm lens for £149 which is a saving of about £300 on a new one. It was between that and the Nikon Z5 ort Fuji X-T3 thank you
@@andrew107 well that is an excellent deal!
for real estate videography
how about handheld videos - will enough built-in stabilization (in camera + kit lens = double stabilization?)
or gimbal all the same necessary?
If you have really steady hands then yes it's good enough. But if you're really serious about real estate videography, then I'd suggest gimbal en a slider
I have this camera and love it, I also only have the kit lens but also have gotten really good sharp photos, as well as super blurry ones, my weakness is taking selfies with it since the screen doesn't flip around, any tips? that selfie pic you posted looked really sharp.
Hi there, thanks a lot for your comment! :)
You should try out this little cheap thing (I have it too and use it all the time): amzn.to/3kh3FXU
So now you can easily see yourself and make sure to have steady hands and shutter speed above 1/50th
ever heard of a thing called a tripod?
@Bart Levenson yes I have a few actually lol
Can you please recommend some good lenses that can be used with Sony a7 ii for taking travel photography? Thankyou
I just tested out one which is the Tamron 28-200mm. I was traveling to Paris in France and I can highly recommend that one for traveling. The review video will be coming later today 😃
Tamron 35mm 2.8 and the Viltrox 85mm 1.8
@@alonzofarmer3994 the viltrox might be a bit too big for traveling to be honest
@@alonzofarmer3994 I would recommend the Samyang 35mm f2.8 instead of the Tamron (nice results photo/video performance) however he might be home by now 😄
What would you recommend for fashion photography (stills) and occasional video content creating? Mostly in low light like with the city lights..I am thinking about buying this cause Sony is good with low light but I am used to Canon but I am not sure how Canon RP does in low light..
I would go with the Canon Eos RP. Because as you mentioned, you are already used to Canon. It will give you a much familiar experience.
Sony is a bit better when it comes to low light, but if you have a proper lens with the RP it will be just fine.
Also being able to do some video content the RP is just a tad better. 😊
@@GaryJahman Okay Thank you, this is really helpful and what lens would go good with the RP as far as in low light?
@@tatr5248 budget friendly wise the RF 35mm f1.8 is a great value option. You can also find it as a total kit 😉
Hello, tell me, I have the opportunity to buy either a sony alpha 2 camera or canon eos rp on Black Friday. what's better to take?
I would go with the Canon because it is more modern :)
Hey mati, top video!
Keep up the good work
Wow helemaal uit sranang! Thanks!
I bought the a7 ii with the lens for $999, was it worth the money for a camera that is 6 years old?
It depends what lens you got. There should be some black friday deals right?
Either way this camera is still relevant and in some fronts better than newer Canon Eos RP that also roughly costs the same
I have a difficult time deciding between a7ii and Canon RP. Second hand, I can get them for the exact same price. I currently shoot on canon, but it's an entry-level rebel series so I don't mind switching to sony or R mount. Any advice?
I would choose the Canon EOS RP in your case. You already have some Canon experience and the RP is a great value camera
@@GaryJahman I was thinking the same thing about the canon experience.
My main genres of photography are In-studio automotive photography and landscapes. Because of the landscapes, I was leaning towards the A7ii for its low light capabilities but I'm not sure.🙈
@@f2.8- The A7II and the RP would be both great for your needs. Not sure if the A7II is better in low light conditions, but I do know that Sony files have better dynamic range.
You should try both and see which one you like better.
@@GaryJahman I see, I will try some demo models out before I make my decision. Thanks so much for the tips and advice, I really appreciate it.
@@f2.8- no problem, happy to help you out!
Also I would go to a "real" camera store as they are usually willing to help out a lot as well.
Is this good for a first camera i am 13 years old and did al the rescearch and i think i am going to get the a7ii over the a7
For a first camera this might be a bit too much, but if you're willing to learn then by all means go ahead and get the A7II. You will be very happy with it!
Elias Van Goethem hey buddy I’m 16 and my first camera was a canon eos rebel T6 this is a great first camera its a DSLR that will treat you well you can get it in a nice kit with two lenses too
I'm twice as old and still went for the a7ii as my first camera. Been using it for 1.5yrs and have gotten great results. Not the best continuous af and the lack of eye af has always been on my mind as a reason to swap to the a7iii, but I bought the a7ii used at $650, which at that price was a no brainer.
Hi!
Im from Argentina, and i wanna get this camera to make pictures to the stars, and general nocturne pictures. ¿Is this camera, whit the lens 28mm f2, ok for that propouse?
Nice video!!
Hi Camilo! Wow all the way from Argentina!
I really love the steaks from your country haha!
This camera is sufficient for your needs. The 28mm f2 is actually quite good to start with.
Can you recommend a good camera for photographing kids that don’t sit still? I was looking at the Sony A7 ll and the Canon EOS RP
Preferably under $1,800
@@Sportsfan18 both will do the job well 👍📸
@@GaryJahman thanks so much!!
@@Sportsfan18 no problem 😊
It really comes down to which one you like when you first hold it in your hands 😉
Need it ! 😍🙃
😃🙃
@@GaryJahman what are you doing of it ?
@@marienparisse1144 I take photos with it :)
@@GaryJahman oh, because i'm searching one 🙃
I love that in 2020 1080p is considered just OK (7:12 -- 8:22 and 8:32). LOL!!!! I just find it fascinating how demanding we've become. It made me laugh.
Haha yes we are demanding creatures 😂
@@GaryJahman LOL! Great video.
I bought it new back then and still rocking it!
Great camera and if you can get a nice one used you have an amazing deal to get into full frame.
At the end buying a better lense will give you more value then just a new camera
And btw. I am still only using the one Batterie that came with it. Worked well for me (landscape photography)
Back then I bought it new only because of the sensor 5 axis stabilization which is really great
Yes 💯
This is still a very solid camera. I think even now in 2021 with even more e-mount lenses it is a very strong choice 👍
@@GaryJahman 100% and the Kit lense is better then people think ...
i did everything with it it term of landscape photography. Even photos of the milky way turned out great.
Of course it’s not perfect, but the beginner won’t miss anything
Actually I am just switching to a Loxia 21 and/or 16-35GM.
But used 😅
@@Casskario haha 🤣
The loxia is also on my wishlist 😃
@@GaryJahman haha, right now I am testing the Loxia 21- but I am not sure if I should get the 16-35GM instead.
It basically versatility against lightweight, high quality mechanical lense with great sunstars 😅
If you are thinking about the Loxia I can send you some RAW pictures so you can have a look at the quality 😇
Do you recommend this camera for an entry level persoj
Yes and with the right attitude in learning photography this can be a great camera for many years 👍👍
Would you say this is worth moving to from a Nikon D7500? Looking to jump to a mirrorless system now as I’ve not really invested in and good glass. So maybe thinking older body plus some good glass and upgrade body down the line. 👍
Just to add I don’t do video. So this is from a photography only perspective. I guess my budget would be the A7ii or possibly Nikon z5
@@andyconnolly83 Thanks for your question Andy. Well because you already have a Nikon camera and I assume some Nikon lenses as well. Then the logical step is indeed to go with the Z5. You can easily adapt the older lenses with an adapter and still have all the benefits of a mirrorless camera.
But honestly, if you already master the D7500 then it is only worth upgrading/switching if you really REALLY NEED the benefits of a mirrorless camera.
@@GaryJahman thank you very much for the reply. I have the Nikon 35mm 1.8, sigma 17-50 2.8 and Nikon 55-200 so I haven’t spent out on glass.
The back story is I used to shoot weddings and fashion on a canon 5D mark ii. But around 7 years ago I was in an accident and fractured my spine, I had to sell all of my gear to help finance the costs of being off work. Around 18 months ago I decided to buy a camera to try get back into it as a hobby and got a good deal on a D7500. But I really do miss the Full Frame cameras, unfortunately I can’t afford to go out and buy the setup I used to have. I have no fx glass so the FTZ adaptor isn’t really relevant I believe as the z5 will only proceed around 12mp in DX mode. (Not a deal breaker) but I may aswell start afresh whichever way I go. I’ve not used mirrorless before but it seems more logical to jump over even to an older body instead of going FF DSLR and changing again in a few years. I hope this makes sense haha
@@andyconnolly83 My bad, I misread and thought you had the D750.
Thanks for sharing the back story! So in this case if you just want to try it out then the Sony is a solid option. Lens options are plenty and some are actually quite affordable and pretty good (3rd party brands such as Viltrox, Samyang/Rokinon and Tamron).
It is quite a small camera compared to your Nikon and you might find it even uncomfortable 😌
But the results do speak for themself. Shoot in RAW and edit as you please. Of course with good lighting and composition you can get really good results. Have a good one Andy!
Bro I am in between going second hand very good shape 7ii for $1300 with the 24-70 lens or go all out and get the 7iii.
Mostly i want it for real estate video and to keep doing videography. What do you recommend. going 7iii it's an increase of around $1600 more overall.... ahh decisions.
If you want to do video than definitely go with the Sony A7III bro. Eventually you will earn your money back with real estate video 👍💯
@@GaryJahman The only thing is right now its hard for me to justify the cost of the Sony A7III. I will get the AII and as soon as is viable i will upgrade body's accordingly. it was very hard to make the decision but I am willing to start with the 7II. Right now i have an older Canon
@@joseeliasnemer that's also a good strategy. Good luck Jose!
Can this camera take some light rain for a few minutes?
Yeah, but I would recommend bringing some kind of protection just in case.
Hi, I'm interested on adquiring this Sony Alfa, I'm an amateur and now I would like to take a step further and get a mirrorless fullframe camera, I wanted to buy the Sony Alfa 7 but doing some research I find out that it doesn't manage image noise well on higher ISO levels, that's a problem for me 'cause I like taking pics of the milky way and I need to use higher ISO levels. Does somebody knows if the Sony Alfa II has the same problem? Has this camera improved in this feature?
Yeah this is definitely more suitable for your needs. The original A7 is okay and you can still get decent images in higher iso levels. But to reduce it all in post takes lots of work and time.
This A7II is better, easier and much quicker to get the desired results.
I try not to go higher then iso 3200 for astrophotography by the way
@@GaryJahman Thaks a lot, I was worried about that, I'll definitley get this camera soon then. Great video btw :)
@@deostomates no problem! What lens are you going to get by the way?
@@GaryJahman A Tamrom 17-28mm F2.8 would be nice for most of the landscape and milkyway pics that I usually take, I would also need a telephoto like 400mm for moon surface and animal pics. I'm also interested on adquiring the "one move one shot" star tracker in order to get longer exposures while doing astrophotography (like 1-2minutes) and get stars as dots instead of traces
Aah sounds cool! Where can I see your results if you have it?
which is better? A7ii or 6400 for Portrait?
I would prefer the A7II for portraits. Especially if you want that dreamy look with a f1.4 lens :)
But the A6400 combined with the Sigma 56mm F1.4 is a solid option as well.
My vote goes to the full frame look :)
what if i use cheap lens FE 1.8 50mm?
@@ryzenbiel4145 yes that would be absolutely fine for portraits
thanks... 😊
Only for shooting landscape? How dissapointing and I use a Sony a7ii
Of course not, I meant when compared to the A7III.
This is a very versatile camera and can be used for almost all types of photography 🙂
Damn you Autofocus! I think it likes the camera and my hands more than my face! :)

HellYeah. It's a great way to get into Sony's FF ecosystem. You can buy a Brand New Sony A7II with kit lens for $999.00. I traded in at my LCS my Sony A6000's and APS-C lenses, and paid the remainder balance of $250.00 for my Brand New Sony A7II body! You can buy the body only for $899.99. I wasn't going to jump on the Sony APS-C band wagon with all the new Sony APS-C cameras coming out. The only way I was going to upgrade was if it was to a Sony FF camera... Great video btw.
Wow thanks a lot for your comment! You got a great deal buddy. What lens(es) do you got with it?
@@GaryJahman I was using SLR lenses at first with Fotasy adapters. I had a Minolta Rokkor X 50mm 1.4 & 1.7, and a Rokkor (Canon FD mount) 28mm 2.8. But now use budget Sony FE 50mm 1.8, and Sony Kit 28-70mm lenses. To POOR for G lenses...

@@waylonparauti4805 well it depends on what kind of portraits you are willing to take 🤓
But for beginners:
One of the most affordable is the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm F1.8 for environmental portraits: amzn.to/353UmFi
And for headshots (from shoulder level and up) the Viltrox 85mm f1.8: amzn.to/357iGGp

Great review, you sound like Jokoy's uncle!
Also, how's the noise level in higher ISO against the a6100? Is the a7ii still better or has the a6100 with the modern apsc sensor caught up?
LOL
I have to give it to the A7II, on higher ISO levels the noise is much cleaner.
With the A6100 I wouldn't go above ISO 6400 but that's my own preference to reduce the noise level
@@GaryJahman thanks for the reply! Right now, I'm torn between buying a Rokinon 35mm 1.4 for my A7ii, or just sell my A7ii, buy a a6400/a6100 + sigma lenses. But I only do photos and no videos at all. Still thinking of which one is better for photos, my only concern about the aps-c lineup is the low light and dynamic range, and my gripe on a7ii is the slow focusing speed.
Thanks, Gary! You deserve more subscribers!
@@sarjialdana7098 Sarji Aldana no problem!
If you do only photos then I would go definitely for the A7II with the Rokinon 35mm f1.4
The reason for that is with A6400 or any other A6xxx you will never get the full frame look and also less noise in your image.
F1.4 on full frame is really dreamy, some would say that you cannot see the difference. But I don't agree with that because the feeling is totally different ;)
