@@Daymickey Extremely. It was an internal government conflict, a rebellion against colonialism, a religious war, a terrorist insurgency and a political revolution beyond the aforementioned rebellion all wrapped up in one. It's a mess, even today, and it an extraordinarily complex topic to discuss.

If you were wondering where Grey has been for the last month, he spent all this time animating that flag falling down at 4:04 (and 2 days on research and drawing for the rest of the video ^^)
He doesn't do the animation, he had a compition a few years back.

This is hands down (or thrown on an island) my favourite CGP Grey video in that little bracket of being short but wholly educational. The animations, the sly comments, the delightful storytelling and information just washing all over. Gah, it's brilliant.
Love the hesitant approach to the troubles, definitely a touchy subject for both unionists and nationalists but to be fair he is impartial.

I like how the main take away in the comments is that Grey was able to very skillfully avoid angering people through word choices. Meanwhile I'm over here wondering about the tidbit about flag ratios and thinking "I wonder if anyone has a world flag diagram with proper to scale representations of each nations flag?". I have this sidetrack thought as a result of this video. Just don't have the drive to look up the answer. there are probably thousands of things like this traversing the neurons in my brain, never to be resolved. Keep making these videos, you may solve long standing brain itches that laziness prevents the viewers from scratching.

just some bonus info from you friendly neighborhood northern Irish person. The dude who cut of hand was called eogháin. So in Irish (as in the language) the county Tyrone, translates to "eogháin's country" But cuz Irish is weird. The literally, direct translation is "country of eogháin"
Lots of languages use that form of possessives instead of the English way. That is, they go " of ". That's not something that makes Irish weird, in my opinion.

I love the slight charm sound effect when the troubles glow subsides as he gets distracted. 3:42, it’s a very slight high ringing/singing sound.
I love the metaphor (that I think is reused in newer videos) of the forest of all knowledge. I doubt you could redo the joke of certain topics leading you down wrong paths, but it's a really good way of visualizing the research process.

Note it's always done height by width. CGP Grey made a mistake, Ireland is 1:2, while Netherlands (and most countries) are 2:3.

@@prim16 Actually it's always [expected larger number]:[expected smaller number] of whatever you're talking about, completely independant of which one is height, width, breadth, or any other factor. Since flags are typically horizontal in nature, CGP's measurements are indeed the correct ones of width, then height. Same for the aspect ratios of screens, but not for, say, piping. For some reason carpentry appears to be an exception to this, but it's the only one I know of.
I was in Northern Ireland for The Twelfth one year and I gotta say, for a place with no flag they sure love their flags...

Kinda-Republican chiming in - The video dances around the Troubles, and the kinda-iffy symbolism of the Lámh Dhearg Uladh - and with good reason. Grey could make a whole 3 hours-long documentary if that was the subject to cover. But for a super short video with a forest of asterisks - well done.

I have a personal gripe with the way we treat European powers as somehow uniquely colonial, when in truth the only thing special about Europe is that it got super lucky with geography and therefore had a head-start on everyone else. Consider what Japan did at the first sign of having significant power. I also think there's a problem with claiming colonisation as evil, when surely it's the war and bloodshed that's the problem rather than human migration (the former being performed by a government, and the latter by individuals).
The star in the centre is called the six points of fellowship, the main symbol used in the Orange Order.
