Documentary entry representing Iowa at the 2015 high school National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
Teacher: Chris Green
Student: Alex Bare
School: North Scott High School (Eldridge, IA)
Division: Senior individual documentary
Ranking: Finalist, 14th in the nation
Some of the original music used in this video comes from a CD produced by the Meskwaki Nation called "From the Lodges of the Meskwaki Nation." It is available for purchase at the Meskwaki Nation's museum.
In retrospect, looking at the video in 2019, I would change the title. While the Meskwaki are the last federally recognized tribe based in Iowa, they are certainly not the only ones with land claims and deep heritage in this state (especially the Ioway people, for whom the state was named).
If you have any urgent corrections to add, feel free to contact me via Instagram / alexbaretv and I will happily note them here. I was 18 when I made this documentary and I know that my research was not complete and may contain inaccuracies.
Many thanks to the interviewees and others who helped me along the way, especially those at the Meskwaki Tribal Museum!
I am a mutt, I am half Navajo and half Meskwaki. I am also a descendant of Pushetonequa. It was recently discovered he was my grandmother's grandfather. As a result, I am 1/16 French. I know where my fight and drive for independence comes from.
@@soxmonki, I was born and raised in the Phoenix area. I'm officially registered as a Navajo and my mother is Meskwaki. The demeanor of my brothers and sister is very different than the local Native population. I've fallen victim to violence, accidents and survived cancer twice, with the last occurrence in my lower left lung. At the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, they noticed I had a lot of fight and unwillingness to give up when undergoing cancer treatments. I attribute my Meskwaki heritage for that fight in all situations. Yeah, that is enlightening on this brief history lesson on the Meskwaki.
@@shawnbegay4966 can you tell me about shapeshifters
@@lultay3xyamsayin302, unfortunately, I can't without research. I was born and raised in Phoenix and was pretty much detached from my parents' cultures. I have a background in the aerospace and semiconductor industries, but have some knowledge of my cultural ancestry.
@@lultay3xyamsayin302 we just don't talk about them in general. It's a sin basically, or evilway teachings, don't think about it or talk about it. Certain ways you can prevent certain monsters from creeping in
All and all, they took your land.. and no it’s (“our land”) 🇺🇸🙃
I am descended from black hawk and related to Jim Thorpe. My Grandpa was born in Marshaltown . He was very proud of the meskwaki. Love you Tama, and people of the red earth 🌎
Oh wow me too!😁😃
@@Xavierlikespanthers22 hi cousin
@@miko3895 Hello 👋 😁
Cousin. 💯
Courage and perseverance finally resulted in a little bit of justice for the Meskwaki people.
And this at a time when the State of California paid bounties for indian scalps!
All Meskwaki should gather and live again in Iowa.
I’m glad he mentioned that. I didn’t know. I’m proud to be an Iowan, not a Californian.
im from Dubuque Iowa and have helped restore parts of the native prairies, we still have native sites along in the Mines of Spain and Swiss valley national parks, thank you for the history lesson, i needed it
I love Dubuque
I never knew this until today! Thank you so much for the lesson.
Love the video. Very educational.
Excellent video! Well researched and conceived.
Peamushka’s portrait by George Catlin (seen in video) is on display at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis.

Thank you so very much for this video.this is another reason for " CRT " to be taught for the benefit of us all.
Makes me cry.the battle for credit island. Long live black hawk
The iowa governor at the time let them buy their old land back. The federal government told the iowa government to kick them out but the governor refused. It's why the meskwaki settlement was able to stay.
Where can I get a copy of the Map @ 7

Thanks for the history lesson, Meskwaki from abroad.

It’s from the album “From the Lodges of the Meskwaki Nation” by the Meskwaki Language Department, I’m not sure exactly which song it is.
What is the Native American music used in this video
I am interested in this tribe and would like to go sightseeing in Iowa.
Let me spoil it.. corn.
@@falkorhd6669 can't forget the wonderful smell of pig shit
I was born next to the Fox River in Illinois. I am white. When I was small I used to ask where our native peoples went they told me "many did not survive, some went to Iowa." It made me cry.
You are not native! $5 fake Natives! Research Dawes Rolls!
I think she meant the native people of that area
@@rodneydavies9604 She clearly explained she was not a Native American. You should delete this.
Crikey. Didn't there used to be a message function on CZcams? I wish to know what some of the researchers in these threads' interest in Blackhawk is. Is it strictly historical? Or, do some wish to research and establish a blood line/quantum?
Black hawk was a great leader, my relative. He tried hard to save his people, it was desperate, running around hiding. And fighting for their lives. It was probably the last native American war. They ended up being forced onto a reservation. But some hid out , and stayed in the old hunting grounds. Eventually, some tribal family bought some land in Iowa. Now we have about 8,000 acres of private property in Tama!
The thread replying is probably Facebook
We represent the lost tribe members, who went into hiding in northern Mexico..
Go back to Iowa!
You should come back home. It might not be very recognizable to the former descriptions of the once beautiful state; but there are still some parts untouched
Not a Native American, but I live in the Quad Cities where the energy of this history is palpable. Nothing but great admiration and pure respect for the hell you gave the whites
I bet ye wish the killed all your ancestors as well no doubt😉
Nasty
What the F…
Bro u have a video of me dancing when I was 6😭💀
I hope things are good were your at Alva -- i will never forget that you taught me how to loom bead an tann hides better so may we meet again in the happy hunting grounds.
yup its a settlement not a rez!!!!
They purchased the land. They took ownership.
Pretty crazy they were from michigan ended up in iowa. Might aswell be another planet
I'm curious about Keokuk!
Is he respected among his tribe and/or other Natives for negotiating land?
Did the negotiations benefit the Natives in any way?
Wasn’t he the guy who didn’t have the right background to negotiate? He did it anyway?
Back them there was probably little choice but the Mesakwi leaders who bought land in Iowa were amazing. What a wonderful history lesson for Iowa and the nation.
@@seaglasssparkles6910 He was the chief of his tribe, alongside Blackhawk's tribe
I would imagine being chief is credential enough, what else would a native posses?
Or was he making negotiations that impacted far more tribes than his own?
And he was curious about you too. He would have loved to have looked at you through his magnifying glass and laughed
@@warriorhudson2594 I'll do it right back if that's what up

Race cars dad has me ...
Good knowledge, I have yet to go see the Pow Wow in Iowa :(
I cut out full and brightly colored photos from the Des Moines Register back when I first started teaching in the early 80s. I found them cleaning up. I had moved to Arizona but always thought about Tama. I’ve been to Pow Wows here but not in Iowa. Maybe someday I will.
Crimes against humanity, my tribe Black Hawk was sold by missionaries into slavery! The only thing left are family stories.
Sdann
yo what about the ioway
The Iowa are separate. They are related to the Ponca, OTO, Omaha, Pawnee, Lakota, nichisitia, Shoshone and all the other siouan people at the State Fair.
My grandpas mom was poweskiek
Poweshiek
I'm from the sac and fox tribe
if you see this again dad I just want to say I LOVE YOU AND I MISS YOU!!!!!! AND YOUR GRANDKIDS WANT TO SEE YOU!!!!!
a settlement sounds like:
I come and kick you the F out your house in the winter you there assed out and finally I hear you knocking at the front door of the house I stole from you fair and square and then cut a deal that I'll let you rent maybe stay in one of the rooms in the house and give some of your shit back but only on conditions
Is that better than a Rez?? I guess depends who you ask, most of the youngsters nowadays don't really seem to give a shit cause they busy smoked out and "hit" from drugs and or drunk off their ass startin' drama or they gangbanging n shit
But yet at the Pow Wow eating up all the mf'n Fry Bread and trying too get phone numbers from chicks and taking selfies n shit
It's not always like that though bro I'm just venting low key 💯🌽
Some of your language is inappropriate. I think I understand what you are saying but this tribe should still be proud of what their chief did back in the 1800s. And it’s good to keep their culture and language alive. It’s too bad casinos have to be a part but I hope the tribe is able to improve lives of the Native people living in Tama. I hope the students take advantage of the opportunities they are given. The way you describe young people is nationwide. Probably worldwide. I know most make good decisions and pray it continues.
@@seaglasssparkles6910 apologies for the inappropriate language.
yeah I hope that they care cause the way it's looking on the front line it sure don't look like it's headed that way.
Non original tribes are like mesquakie claiming land that wasn't theres they hid and in turn turned on Iowans non native
For ONCE...A GREAT ending of an American Indian story!! Cool high school prom clip.
🦊
I dont see any individualism between the modern tribes weather it's the dress, dance, song, and even drumming it all seems vary similar. When we know each tribe was vary distinctly unique to one another and the environments they live from.
I see what you mean. It’s important for tribes to keep their individual identities.
To this day the true stories are the living survivors of Sioux mesquakie anti American tribes..unbelievable govt hid them slaughtering taking hostage and other horrors in Iowa ..may peace come to all who suffered including the peoples forced to live under chiefs of insane evils towards their peoples and to reveal the lies of their ancestors
Why humans do what they do
Because they’re humans and can’t help themselves, they’re helpless because they’ve developed a reliance on Government Commods and powdered eggs.
Chief white cloud was my ancestor
We don't need your Sun. We are people of the Darkness.
whats the music at 2:18?
