  • If you thought McCarthyism was gone...well, no such luck. In this episode, we'll discuss the US' newest wave of reactionary, anti-communist rhetoric and legislation. As capitalism's popularity wanes among the American population and the economic system begins to show signs of impending collapse, we should expect more kneejerk measures like these to try to rally support around a failing system.

It just changes focus. The Soviets were an adequate boogeyman for nearly 5 decades. Then came Islamic Fundamentalism. Now that is also fading, so we are focussed once again on Communism. Never mind that China has an entirely Capitalist economy, that US corporations have helped build into a powerhouse. North Korea is communist AF, AND threatens to nuke the US. Somehow, we don’t pay any mind to Kim Jong.
ISIS is evil, yet the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia practices the exact same Sharia Law, has horrible human rights records, and regularly beheads people in public for drinking alcohol or being homosexual. So are they part of the axis of evil? Not at all. Every single US president is pictured hand in hand with the King. Are we waging covert war against Saudi Arabia, as we did in Syria, because of their treatment of their people? Not at all. In fact, we sell the Saudis weapons constantly.
They will literally say anything, to keep the military budget where it is, or increasing. It has NOTHING to do with Communism or Islamic Fundamentalism. It has everything to do with, “do business the way the US says to do business, or we will slander you in the global media, then invade”. Its really that simple.

@@Charles-472 Hi, here’s a foundational understanding of Marxs theory
      Central Economic Problem
Humans have UNLIMITED desires and only LIMITED resources in which to fulfill those desires. There will always be SOME level of scarcity and trade offs will NEED to be made. There is NO solution to this problem due to the laws of the physical universe, as far as we know the real world has X amount of X resource. This problem just leaves us with our best attempt to answer 3 questions.
      WHAT should be produced?
      HOW should it be produced?
WHO should it be produced for?
What Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels argued is that the factors of production which are Land, Labor, and Capital should be controlled through VARIOUS means of SOCIAL OWNERSHIP to best serve the interests of society. To best use our material reality for the benefit of ALL humans. This is why Communism is associated with Egalitarianism. The problem most people argue is that one form of Social ownership, which is state ownership, is a horrible way to control Capital, and it is. What they fail to understand is that, fundamentally, a government only represents society as long as it fights for democracy. What happens in a Capitalist society that becomes a plutocracy or a corporatocracy such as the United States? The same thing the Soviet Union suffered from, centralized power over Capital in the hands of a few, the only difference being Capitalists don’t even ATTEMPT to represent society, they’re MUCH less subject to scrutiny than the government even though they are often the same actors. What tends to happen in a Capitalist society is those with the power over Capital, Capitalists, make the state their puppet and use their control over the means of education to preserve their power. The best example of this is the history of the Red Scare in the US and the period of massive power in the hands of capitalists in America between the years 1870-1899 called the Gilded Age. This is why Karl Marx argues that the state is nothing but an oppressive tool to be used against society should Democracy fail to prevail in the face of Capitalist power, which it often does.

At most I had a humanities professor who seemed more a little more amenable to the idea of authoritarianism than democracy. When speaking in more private contexts they all definitely seemed left-leaning compared to my republican parents, because they'd support things like, you know... NSF grants. I think the most left-wing professor I had in college was my Russian history professor. I took 3 of his classes and it really made me look at the USSR through a more critical lense and it was really hard to reverse all the anti-communist brainwashing I went through in high school.
Also I can safely say I started leaning more left wing after I graduated, started working full-time as a teacher and fully experienced the ills of capitalism.

But if you mention the Scandinavian socialist Democracies they will say they are not socialists. And if you say well can we get universal healthcare like they do in Scandinavian countries they say no because that would is socialism. So which is it???
