The Old Guard of the US Army Third Infantry is one of the United States oldest & most honorable units. They guard at Arlington Nat'l Cemetery & the Tombs of the Unknown. They've participated in every US war since the War of 1812 including units sent to Iraq. Sure, the honor America's history with the Fife & Drum Corps & the historic uniforms, but they are true soldiers who fight for America's freedom. Honoring our past does no dishonor tp our present or endangers our future. Get a clue.

Our band, the First Army New York Band AKA 26TH Army Band Staten, New York..had a routine established to march around Fort Wadsworth (oldest Army Post in America) at 1 PM 1300 hours unless that interfered with a job we had... Of course we were a lot younger than the members of THE Army Band in DC which tend to be career musicians. Marching more everyday served to keep us in fine shape. I would recommend getting THE Army Band out on the street a whole lot more..work on tightening up those lines. Member's of the Band look to be needing more street marching time..and why not? Good exercise!!

    I have a question.
Korea annually designates it as the day of the Armed Forces on October 1 and marches on a large scale like it does now.
I wonder if the US military is marching in the city when the president takes office.

The are wearing red because the British had a number of different uniforms, mainly the different color of the cuffs and the collar, those 2 parts together were called “facings” so each regiment had a different color facing, and each regiment had there own musicians, but the Color of there uniforms were opposite that the colors of the soldiers, so say the 10th regiment had red coats with yellow facings, there musicians had yellow coats with red facings, so the continental army did the same

    THE UNITED STATES ARMY BAND
Let martial note in triumph float
And liberty extend its mighty hand
A flag appears 'mid thunderous cheers,
The banner of the Western land.
The emblem of the brave and true
    Its folds protect no tyrant crew;
The red and white and starry blue
    Is freedom's shield and hope.
Other nations may deem their flags the best
And cheer them with fervid elation
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation.
Hurrah for the flag of the free!
May it wave as our standard forever,
The gem of the land and the sea,
    The banner of the right.
    Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray
That by their might and by their right
    It waves forever.
Let eagle shriek from lofty peak
    The never-ending watchword of our land;
Let summer breeze waft through the trees
The echo of the chorus grand.
Sing out for liberty and light,
Sing out for freedom and the right.
Sing out for Union and its might,
    O patriotic sons.
Other nations may deem their flags the best
" And cheer them with fervid elation,
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation"

The British heritage is obviously a large part of our history, but almost every nation can trace its roots to another nation, does that mean that they must acknowledge every nation that preceeds or influences them? As far as I can tell, we pay plenty of tribute to our friends and relatives: The United Kingdom.

+Dan Wood If you are referring the the bearskin caps, those were originally worn by the French, The Grenadier and Napoleon's Imperial guard to be exact... If you are referring to the red coats worn by the fife and drum corps, the blue lapel and red coat are the reverse of the infantryman's coat, which was standard of all European armies. British soldiers of the era, for example wore Red coats with white lapels, their musicians, wore white coats with red trimmings.... All armies of that era wore different variations of the same thing... And, those guidelines were initially set forth by Napoleon himself. So, if you want to be technical, we copied the French, via the British - more or less.
