What's interesting is that while Buster goes in ostensibly asking for a drink, he leaves without taking one, which makes us wonder about his motivations here. Notice how he escalates the situation so that it has to become violent and how cheerful he is about the fact. Buster Scruggs is portrayed as the good guy both through his narrative, white clothes and the comic dust but the reality is something different. He's a merciless killer who takes joy in provoking violence, which he is expertly able to inflict.

I actually love the little foreshadowing in this scene. The first and most obvious is that he kills the first guy by shooting him in the head just like what happens to him later.
The second one though is when he talks about the last person crawling out of the bar. We just think it is funny how he'll leave him to the dessert critters but he mentions it being sloppy shooting on his part. Hinting at maybe he isn't as good as he used to be and there is room for someone to overtake him. This was such a good story and character.

@@jadedandbitter I hadn't thought of that! I think that's one reason why Buster Scruggs is such a complex and interesting character. He is labelled a misanthrope and seems to sell us this idea that he does have a very low opinion of humanity all together since they all seem brutish and violent. But for Buster, I think that equally he tries to live by his own moral code and honor - he surrenders his pistols even though he could have kept the concealed ones and never kills anyone who isn't threatening to kill him first. Yet, his gleeful abandon at taking delight in such encounters doesn't put him quite at "honorable" imo.

Buster Scruggs is the cheerful, singing, aw-garsh cowboy we've all come to know growing up. He positively becomes a Tex Avery character when he pats himself off. I think Buster Scruggs is more Chaotic Order than lawful anything. He went into the bar, disrupting; ordering the chaos in line. He was disrespected. So he murdered just about everyone with smile, opening the door letting the guy get away. Broke the 4th wall. Didnt even get his whiskey, that he asked for because he killed the bartender. Despite that there was also whiskey on the table of the guys he gunned down. It was a structure to his chaos.

It would be overkill. We know how he lived and how he died. Anything else after the original short film would just be a contrived money grab and would ultimately be incredibly disappointing. Don't get me wrong I love this character and if they had of made a full length film about him it probably would have been incredible. But part of this short films appeal is that he is such a BIG, OVER THE TOP character and you only get a little time with him. It is overwhelming in almost every aspect but it's complete. Any of the questions you could really ask about him are more or less answered by his actions. He wouldn't seek settling down with a wife because he loves the gunslinger/singer lifestyle, he is honorable at least by his code which he won't break, he is fair, he is clearly not a pushover, he is actually happy with his life and lifestyle, he wants to be the best or to die with honor in pursuit of being the best. After seeing this I would hate seeing some buster Scruggs "mismatched/forced partnership that starts rocky but then they become best friends" buddy cop crap or some pointless origin story or, ugggh, a buster Scruggs romcom......🤮
