No, he wanted whiskey. They started the confrontation. There are a number of reasons why he left without drinking, one of which is that taking the whiskey after shooting the barman dead would make him a thief. And Buster Scruggs is not a liar, coward, or thief.
@@jadedandbitter I hadn't thought of that! I think that's one reason why Buster Scruggs is such a complex and interesting character. He is labelled a misanthrope and seems to sell us this idea that he does have a very low opinion of humanity all together since they all seem brutish and violent. But for Buster, I think that equally he tries to live by his own moral code and honor - he surrenders his pistols even though he could have kept the concealed ones and never kills anyone who isn't threatening to kill him first. Yet, his gleeful abandon at taking delight in such encounters doesn't put him quite at "honorable" imo.
We're all talking about the scary grin he gives to the barkeep, but for me it's the look he gives the 4 other guys just before that. It's almost like it's a clean slate, "Hey there, fellas!"
It would appear the "they," are as ruthless and evil as the iron twirling, trigger pulling, death dealing "hero" and scoundrels -- who may or may not be worthy of a drink at a bar, or a shave and a hair cut, or the right to draw even one more breath, before some pencil lead catches up to them to air condition their hat with a little ketchup ...

Yes, the opening skit was by far the only worth watching. I tried making it through the rest of this movie and always struggled after this guy vanished...
When Buster walks through the saloon doors and pats the dust off, love how it forms the perfect shape of his outline before dissipating, Classic Coen Bros attention to their cinematic style. Such a strong and brilliantly performed character, they could easily devote a whole movie to Busters previous exploits and it would be a huge success!
Both the dust silhouette and the beam of light (through the gunshot wound) are perfect examples of VFX looney tune gags. Someone pointed out that buster Scruggs is pretty much bugs bunny, and now when I watch him in this short it makes sense.
What I like about this scene is how the Coen brothers show us our pop culture icons don't really work out. Buster Scruggs is the cheerful, singing, aw-garsh cowboy we've all come to know growing up. He positively becomes a Tex Avery character when he pats himself off. But, outside of the cartoon world, as the Coen brothers clearly demonstrate, a cheerful, white duds wearing, singing cowboy who has supernatural shooting abilities and isn't afraid to use them is actually positively horrifying.
@@ekkehard8 It probably has more to do with the nearly immoral glee he displays while killing the men. Especially that shit-eating grin he shoots the bartender right before he puts a hole in him.

The guy that he failed to kill that crawled out the door was some foreshadowing that Buster was losing his edge a bit which eventually led to his downfall. Like everyone else I believe we need a full Buster Scruggs movie. To let this character only be known in this short film is criminal though it leaves much to the imagination and any movie would no doubt fall short of expectations...but one can draem.
Well, it could be about a happy cowboy falling in love with a girl, only to get her killed in some kind of avoidable confrontation. And now there he is, getting into every confrontation, hoping someone better would outgun him, only to meet her. Screw me, I am bad at telling stories. 😣😣

I think Buster Scruggs is more Chaotic Order than lawful anything. He went into the bar, disrupting; ordering the chaos in line. He was disrespected. So he murdered just about everyone with smile, opening the door letting the guy get away. Broke the 4th wall. Didnt even get his whiskey, that he asked for because he killed the bartender. Despite that there was also whiskey on the table of the guys he gunned down. It was a structure to his chaos.
@@DirtCheapFU Fair enough .. however Buster follows his own set of rules. He did not just enter the saloon and gun everyone down (although I suspect that was his intention all along) He asks his opponent if he wants a count or not and he has a certain ritual that he follows before, during and after the killings.
I like how they specifically added a subtle visual effects where when he pats the dust off himself it leaves an impression. Adds to that cartoony effect of the character.
It would be overkill. We know how he lived and how he died. Anything else after the original short film would just be a contrived money grab and would ultimately be incredibly disappointing. Don't get me wrong I love this character and if they had of made a full length film about him it probably would have been incredible. But part of this short films appeal is that he is such a BIG, OVER THE TOP character and you only get a little time with him. It is overwhelming in almost every aspect but it's complete. Any of the questions you could really ask about him are more or less answered by his actions. He wouldn't seek settling down with a wife because he loves the gunslinger/singer lifestyle, he is honorable at least by his code which he won't break, he is fair, he is clearly not a pushover, he is actually happy with his life and lifestyle, he wants to be the best or to die with honor in pursuit of being the best. After seeing this I would hate seeing some buster Scruggs "mismatched/forced partnership that starts rocky but then they become best friends" buddy cop crap or some pointless origin story or, ugggh, a buster Scruggs romcom......🤮
I’d love to watch a full movie about Buster. He’d be one hell of an interesting antagonist, all cheery and wicked fast and often breaking the 4th wall.

"The coup de grâce I'll leave to the wolves and Gila monsters." Coup de grâce means: 'The death blow to end the suffering of one who is mortally wounded.' Buster Scruggs is spot-on with words too.
@@_Aieo more accurately, finishing off someone mortally wounded, ie: someone being shot by firing squad and the initial volley didn't kill you outright and the officer in charge of the firing squad takes a pistol and shoots you in the heart or back of the head to finish the guy off.
Would get old, I promise you that. The film's already stunning as an anthology, no need wishing for 2 hours of just buster which is guaranteed to overdose you with him.
How would they fill in several hours of a real life Bugs Bunny character into one cohesive plot? The Coen Brothers would have more success in just making some sort of modern, demented real life Looney Tunes with Buster Scruggs as the star.
I wish it was more about Buster, Tom Waits was great, the pan shot guy was funny, but I had no idea idea why I should keep watching the woman or that stump
What blows my mind is that of you hear the actor's natural accent you'd almost swear it was a different person. A very gifted performer who needs more work, but not until the strike is over.
Buster Scruggs MUST be made into a movie! 🙏🏻 The folksiness contrasted with rapid brutality is a stunning juxtaposition. (Not to mention his pleasant demeanour great smiling singing voice and white duds).
The Coen Brothers love mashing uo two genres. The Big Lebowski was like a 1940s Socal noir private eye movie, but with an affable, gently clueless stoner as a hero instead of Phillip Marlowe. Buster Scruggs drops the cheerful singing cowboy of Roy Rogers movies into bloodthirsty spaghetti western territory, and is totally awesome. I desperately want a full sequel.
Every bit of his performance is great. I think my favorite moment of all is when he insults everybody in the bar and indulges in a goofy little smile, as if to say, "What are you all gonna do about that, huh?"
In reality, this guy would be known across the west, and accordingly feared. The fact that even after recognizing him, they continue with their provocation is what adds to the absurdity of this bit. Love every minute of it.
Yep, he would be - a real life *Sam Brumm* - who, while fiction, was based on a real-life Virginia City thug having a somewhat similar name. (Mentioned in “The Big Bonanza,” by DeQuille.)
They spread "tall tales" about people back in the day. And most folk were "Simpler" back then. Any smelly old outlaw type takes a look at him and his clean-shaven face and fancy duds and see nothing but a well mannered, fancy-talking dandy type (I.E: Full of shite). What they didn't know is that he actually was everything the "tall tales" said about him, but worse. Because he was he was also a very brutal, ruthless and sociopathic killer that also happened to have an S-Tier level of skill at gunfighting.

His acting is so natural
I honestly we were but then he died lol

Yes it should have been a seprate movie😅
Wonderful touch, when leaves dust outline of himself at the beginning. An very talented underrated actor.
A masterclass of acting . He bounces and bobs about and that turn to face the bad guys. Check it out !
Love how he goes in asks for whiskey, shoots them all dead, and departs without ever having taken a drink; the whiskey was just the excuse he needed to initiate a confrontation.
Hahaha perfectly summed up.
No, he wanted whiskey. They started the confrontation. There are a number of reasons why he left without drinking, one of which is that taking the whiskey after shooting the barman dead would make him a thief. And Buster Scruggs is not a liar, coward, or thief.
@@jadedandbitter Nice.
One more reason, he opens the door for the dying, and that is sloppy work that a drinker does not earn
The fact that a light ray went through the gunshot wound of his last victim deserves an Oscar.
Lol wut, an Oscar for a stylistic choice?

I can't believe they set up this character, only to rip him away from me after a quarter of an hour. Gutted.

@@prodigiouspapi7639 yeah, well said.

Both the dust silhouette and the beam of light (through the gunshot wound) are perfect examples of VFX looney tune gags. Someone pointed out that buster Scruggs is pretty much bugs bunny, and now when I watch him in this short it makes sense.
Nothing to do with their style because it's not theirs. It's literally western cartoons.
"Here now! I'll get that for you partner"🤣 We definitely need more of Buster Scruggs!
My friend that is one of the most absolutely spot on synopsis of what the Coen brothers were going for here. Kudos.

When Lawful Evil looks like Lawful Good.
