    I relate to each and every point you have mentioned. After years of painting, it is only now that I have started to paint joyfully. I realise no painting works if there is no joy in it. Sometimes, my friends tell - please make me this type of painting, with a cow in it or two butterflies, etc, etc. I am so busy bending my mind, I end up totally messed up. - is tis what they wanted? Or is iit something else, haha. Now I paint, and put it out there. And it's all thanks to the confidence I gain from being in your group. Thankyou so much for the video.

    Trying to make a painting look generous is a rich hint for loosen up your mind while painting. As a life coach dealing enough with limiting beliefs and so on i can say that your reflections on mental backgrounds are as "hitting" as your practical tips. Compliments, Jochen

    I'm very burdened by the fact that every painting I do has to be very good,and then of course it's not.
    The next day I "fix" it (with a small brush😆)

    I do need to use a lighter touch, lighter on me, and one when I touch the canvas. You mention speeding up. Unfortunately, my problem is that I get in a hurry and don't think about what I am doing, which you mention earlier in the video. Every part of this video was something I need to rethink. Thanks for all your wisdom over my painting journey.

    A simple practice painting using a pre-set # of strokes is very helpful in building discipline.
    Example
    Paint a real apple (not a photo) in simple direct light in 25 strokes or less.
    Use all the time you need.

    That tutorial is so very helpful Malcolm, many thanks for uploading it Overworking is exactly, what I need to avoid doing when painting.
    Having 1 specific goal when you set out to work on a painting, is a fantastic idea.
    I just have a question, if I do get to a stage in a painting and I can't get it to work, is it better (in your opinion) to scrape it all or part of it off or just to wait a few days (clear the mind), & start a fresh painting on a new surface?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you. Letting the painting rest overnight so you have time to think can be very helpful. if necessary, scrape off what needs reworking. Personally I will usually paint on top of wet paint to correct something. But scraping off may be required in the worst case.

    • @theponderingpilgrim4342
      @theponderingpilgrim4342 Před 2 lety

      Ok so scraping off, is a last resort. Easier to paint over wet portion instead.
      Thanks Malcolm, for your guidance. It is much appreciated.

    Dear Mr.Dewey, One question. When you are blocking the darks with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna diluted with mineral spirits, DO YOU let it dry first before to continue with the mid-values?? Thank you so much. I love your loose technique!

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  Před 2 lety

      No I don't let it dry completely. However it is not very wet either. It is a very thin layer and will dry to an extent as I paint other areas like the lights and middle values.

    Hi there, just an update, my pottery didn't make it to the final round of judging. My painting didn't even get through the first round but seeing what has got through is a bit depressing. To my eye some of the weird stuff the judges liked is just unbelievable ,I know everyone has their own personal taste and maybe I'm just feeling a bit discouraged but it's difficult .

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  Před 2 lety +2

      Competitions are not always what they seem. Judges are often subjective. There are many variables that have no bearing on your arts quality. Best advice I know is to move on and work on your art and find your true fans. You will do great.

      @marinashaduri7836 Před 2 lety +1

      Hi, Alison. I understand your frustration. Let me confess that some highly praised (and priced) works seem ridiculous to me as well. However, I always remind myself that art is a form of interaction and communication. The latter requires two individuals, right? So the perception of particular piece of art depends upon the personality, background, character and emotions of a viewer at the moment of observation. I mean that some might be attracted by the painting that others perceive as uninteresting or even ugly. Coaches are humans too. They analyze fundamental rules and do not try to "feel" the emotion/idea/message or the author's personality. Moreover, people tend to believe that high price corresponds to the value of art-piece. Some coaches do not dare to go against the mainstream opinion when many authorities praise this or that work - even if there is only a line on a huge canvas. Malcolm is different - he follows the progress of each student praising each small achievement and emphasizes mostly positive moments. There is no competition in live community - we are trying to help and encourage each other or offer advices without harsh critic. Be optimistic, create for yourself and have fun. Someone (apart of you) will find your work beautiful after all. Happy painting!

    • @alisonmike2912
      @alisonmike2912 Před 2 lety +1

      Oh marina that's so lovely of you thank you . I have to confess I'm as much a critic of other people's work as they are of mine , maybe mine was just a bit too conventional for those judges and I don't want to be untrue to myself just to do well in a competition . My work is evolving every time I do a painting and feel I still haven't found my true style . I've got many paintings I'm really proud of . I don't think I'm trying to have a message in my paintings or get people to think about anything really deep, I just like to paint things that people might like to look at and enjoy and put in their homes . Some people do look down on decorative art and think if it doesn't have a message it's just fluff, well I'm ok with fluff . Thank you for your encouragement . I've now got to go to the prize giving in a few days as my three friends all got to the final , so I'll cheer them on .
