I have used Azola and Duckweed for many years here in Australia, for clearing excess nutrients from small water bodies like garden ponds or rain water holding containers. I also dry excess material and mix with other ingredients to make an organic frozen fish / turtle food for ornamental aquarium fish or for aquaponics.
I agree its also great for composting and mulching. So many uses for this resource

In Hawaii I’ve put in many small ponds and the azolla grows so easily. It’s all that you say, Jack, and more. Do grow this wonder plant. Glad you featured this goody in a video.

@Jack Spirko I was racking my head in to remember the name of this! I am following a fella in Spain who has a traditional farm with pigs and trees. He's doing all sorts of interesting things there. He has ponds that don't hold water for year round, in particular because of evaporation. This would mitigage that quite effetively, wouldn't you say? I am listening as I write this and it sounds like my hunch was correct.

Hi enjoyed this video. I’m in Oregon. We have a mostly natural pond about an acre with bass and bluegill. We are next to the Willamette River and the water elevation goes up/down with the river as the pond is feed underground. I would guess our pond depth around 14ft.
This year the entire pond surface in this Azolla. Was looking to kill it and now after learning its benefits I want to use it for gardening.
My concern is that it will depopulate the bass and bluegill?
I would love to hear your opinion.
    Thank you!

Does the Azolla need aerating or can I just fill my old kids pool with rain water, set some Azolla free and wait gor it to thrive?

It doesn't need O2 BUT, something to consider is mosquitoes. If you use BT in the water that will handle it. Or you can use a simple pump and put in some mosquito fish or gold fish. Either way in such a small depth keep it in a place with morning sun but full shade in the afternoon, this time of year it will flat cook in all day sun and die quickly on you. • @survivalpodcasting

That is a big it depends, if you look at its native range the answer is yes. If you look at my results in container ponds the answer is no. I just sick a few handfuls in a 10 gallon aquarium every fall and have seed crop for spring.

Years ago I was trying to research this. I may have it confused with duckweed when it comes to protein content. I seem to remember 40% protein. We can eat it if we can CLEAN it. I believe that was the key.

@@herelieskittythomas3726 Its ussually 22-26 percent it contains high amounts of polyphenols so id suggest small amounts around 100 g freshweight, its actually beneficial as its high in vitamin b9 and b12.
Its been suggested for use in space in small portions to boost vitamin content of the overall diet.

Add Wolffia with the Azolla. They benefit from each other and will keep the algae away or down. Wolffia is even better than Azolla. so they say.
