    They are one of my favourite bands.The word "Eluveitie" was an inscription on an antique pottery found at an archeological site in Mantua (northern Italy). Mantua was an Etruskian city and the inscription possibly means, that this pot belonged or was crafted by a Helvetian person, because "Eluveitie" in the Etruskian language means something like "The Helvetian". The Latin name for Switzerland is "Confoederatio Helvetica".
    Their main theme is Celtic history and culture from the antiquity. The Celts lived all over Europe and were a pretty dominant culture until they were subdued by the Romans who almost eradicated all Celtic culture on the european continent. Eluveitie mostly sing of the Celtic tribe of the Helvetii who lived in the area of todays Switzerland, southern Germany and western Austria and was the first tribe that came under pressure when the Roman Empire started its expansion north and when the Gallic Wars (around 60-54 B.C.) started.
    In the founding year 2002 the band was meant to be a studio project first and as the founder Christian "Chrigel" Glanzmann is from Winterthur in Switzerland he chose the inscription as the name for the project. He didn't expect that his style of music (Celtic Folk mixed with Death Metal) would be received by the audience so well. After the first successful single releases he got requests for live performances and decided to ask the musicians who joined him for this project to form a "real" band. Since the beginning there were a lot of line-up changes though. Most of the band members are still Swiss and the only members of the current line-up that are not from Switzerland are Nicole Ansperger (violin, she is from Germany) and Michalina Malisz (hurdy gurdy, she is from Poland). The most impactful line-up change happened in 2016, when the previous female vocalist/hurdy gurdist Anna Murphy, drummer Merlin Sutter and guitarist Ivo Henzi left the band and founded their new band "Cellar Darling" (check them out).
    Some songs from Eluveitie you could react to are:
    "King" (captions availiable), "Tegernako" (live at Summerbreeze 2008), "Thousandfold", "A Rose for Epona", or "Quoth the Raven" with the previous line-up (pre 2016) or
    "Rebirth", "The Slumber", "Worship", "Deathwalker" (live at Wacken 2019), "Breathe", "Ambiramus", "Ategnatos" with the current line-up.
    They have two pure acoustic folk albums too. Some of their acoustic songs I would recommend are "Omnos", "Brictom", "Desumiis Luge" (a curse of Helvetic women against some Roman leaders) from the album Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion (pre 2016) and "Lugus" (god of Trade and craftsmanship), "Caturix" (god of war), "Artio" (bear goddess) or "Epona" from the album Evocation II: Pantheon. For "Epona" someone added Gaulish and English lyrics to the official video and at the end of this video there is a little explanation who Epona was. On these two albums the songs are sung in Gaulish, the extinct (since 500 AD) language of the continental Celts that could be reconstructed by using inscripions found at archeological sites from all over Europe and parts (grammar, pronounciation) of languages that are of Celtic origin that are still spoken today, like Gaelic, Welsh or Breton.

      Dude. This comment should be pinned. Your summarization of both European history, and the history of the band is on point, and about as efficient of an infodump as you can get. From one Eluveitie fan to another, I salute thee!

    It's pronounced EL VAY TEE. Glad you enjoyed it! They're my favorite band! They are primarily Swiss folk metal. They combine metal instruments with traditional Celtic folk instruments (like fiddle, harp, hurdy gurdy, tin whistle, bagpipes, and mandola, but not always at the same time). In a lot of their songs, they actually sing in Gaulish, which is a dead language. They are AMAZING to see live. They are the MASTERS when it comes to combining metal with folk. You need to look up more of their music! Welcome to the Eluveitie Family! 🤣☺️

      Don't tell an Irishman that Gaulish doesn't exist anymore. They have to learn that in school and in some areas you can get further with it than with English. However, the Gaulish folk texts date back to the Middle Ages and even today's Irish have trouble understanding them.

    • @daniellehurrell6620
      @daniellehurrell6620 Před 2 lety

      @@Mischnikvideos I thought they speak Gaelic in Ireland, not Gaulish.

    • @Mischnikvideos
      @Mischnikvideos Před 2 lety

      @@daniellehurrell6620 The Celtic area was not a unified empire. There was never a Gaulish language because Gaul only came into existence after the Romans invaded. The Celts in today's southern Germany are Germanic for them (and Germanic is also an invention of theirs). In Roman times, the Celts from southern Germany would probably have had problems understanding the Celts from Ireland. The dialects may have been very far apart because there was no standardization. But there is still "Gaelic", the Breton in French Brittany. Like Gallic, this is also threatened with extinction. There is little everyday use for either. Trade runs in English or French, as does science. If tourists come, you have to communicate with them in these languages. Like everywhere else in the world, such small languages will also die out in Europe.

      Anyone who knows Krokus is too old on the one hand and Swiss on the other. Outside of Switzerland, the "AC/DC copy" has little success.
