Thank you for such a nice explanation. I am a loving wife who is trying to understand what my 48 year old husband will be going through next week. He has a PSA count of 10.7. It was 7.99 3 weeks prior. 3 years ago, it was 2 something. His doctor did a DRE yesterday and said that no nodules were felt, but there was a hardening on one side of his prostate. I am hoping that all is okay and he just has an infection of some sort. For now, I'm comforted that his biopsy should be easier than expected.

Excellent for the patient to understand both choices, especially how many biopsies should be taken & the reason for an antibiotic to be given before or at the very least afterwards.

My husband is having a biopsy in 2 weeks and he asked no questions. Told me it was like a colonoscopy. I am not sure what will happen as he didn't ask those questions. i am going to have him look at this very helpful video. Thank you!

Had biopsy done 8 weeks ago. Will never have it done again. Severe pain when they inserted probe for photos, not too bad after that. Blood everywhere after it was done. Came close to fainting as I left the hospital. Severe pain after I got home took Tylenol which helped a lot. Blood in urine, stool for a couple of days. Blood in semen for 6 weeks. Had no cancer which is good, but, procedure was not a piece of cake which my doctor said it would be. Never again!

Excellent video. I am going for the biopsy in two day and found your video very informative. I will be asking the physician how many samples/needles he is going to use. Everything expressed in your video is exactly what the physician's office has told me so far. Thanks!

Man, 15 years ago and it is still helping men understand this disease. You had said in your video, "It is known that many men have prostate cancer cells and will never have a problem throughout their life without diagnosis or treatment"
Would this pertain to men with a psa reading of 4?

I recently had the procedure done...took an antibiotic approximately 1 hr. before the procedure...the doctor inserted the probe ...took pictures of the prostate...and then took 12 needle biopsies...must have taken 15-20 minutes....no problems...very little pain...it was like getting stung with a rubber band...doctor stated I might pass blood in my urine and feces that day and perhaps a little the next day...told me to take it easy when I got home....no problems at all....

I have gotten at least 4 prostate biopsy procedures at the Tucson VA medical center and have not found much except the 1st time. I optioned to go for a radiation theory but the DR/Ph.D. did not carry on. Then I have found they really look in the haystack as the ultrasonic method cannot find problems in the prostate. Now they use MRI to see the problem area. I am scheduling a CT scan AND back in the Salisbury, VA VA, they have the urinary robot-guided water jet to help me with my BPH. Which I have. That seems to be my everyday pain in my lower region.

I am not sure who this physician is, however, I would like to have him for my biopsy. He explained everything in a CLEAR and simple manner. Docots who are that clear and precise in EXPLAINING things are usually just as good at what they do. It seemed to be a fair assessment of what one may expect from the procedure. A cautionary note: a recent (Sept/2011) article describes an increase in complications: i.e. hospitalization rates due infections; the guess: increased resistance to antibiotics.

My biopsy experience did include some initial sharp pain after the numbing injection. Then it gradually lessened but then it felt like being shot in prostate with a pellet gun. I don’t think my urologist waited long enough for the numbing medication to take effect. Can you imagine your dentist giving you numbing injections and then immediately start drilling?

I recently underwent this procedure. I took an antibiotic called Levaquin about an hour before the biopsy. A local anesthetic was administered and 12 tissue samples were taken. The procedure was more annoying than painful. The entire visit took about an hour. I experienced a bit of discomfort over the next several hours which was greatly eased by taking Tylenol. I slept well that night and there was no pain the following day.

@PhilStellar ask your doctor about taking medication to improve your urination for a month such as flomax and then repeat in one month, if still this high a biopsy is needed but make sure the doctor give you an injection of novacaine to minimize or eliminate the discomfort

Sadly, there is a wide range of the practice of medicine. I always gave a lot of detail about how it will be done and what to expect but not everyone does that. One key question to ask is what kind of anesthesia will be used. You want a local injection to reduce the pain and you want an antibiotic given 20-30 minutes before the biopsy.

@ZAPDUNGAA Several questions- First do you know for sure you have a scar because if the symptoms are from a large prostate medication may help you and also lower your PSA. If you do have a scar, that can be treated with a minor procedure and it also could be causing your PSA to rise. Otherwise I think every 3-6 months to check the PSA.

I had a ultrasound biopsy of prostate today - basically my 'fear' of unknown was much worse than actual procedure, not a big deal, like a finger that stays in there a while and pinches occasionally. NOT a big deal, a little burning when peeing day of and after but no big deal .....and I do not have high pain threshold...

@gchodak1 I'll be 32 in a few months. My urine has been visibly red for the past 3 years.Nothing was found with even a cystoscopy. Not even signs of infection but I was given antibiotics anyway (cipro) twice before to no avail.I was told I have prostititis because Im always urinating and perhaps had a busted blood vessle down there that was to risky to repair. The problem is now because of this regular blood loss, I have bad anemia and have to take iron regularly but still always tired.

Dr. Chodak, before one is subjected to a Prostate Biopsy, does the Urologist discuss with the patient how the procedure is expected to go. Is it normal to have no discussion with the pt but a few instructions on 2 sheets of paper telling the pt to read the instructions with a schedule date. Would U have that Urologist do a Biopsy? The Dr. was asked what were his findings after the ultrasound & he says its 'big & hard.' No explanation; would U recommend for another Dr. to do the Biopsy?

This video is very informative, i recently had this procedure and it was pretty much as they desribe. I wouldn't say it was painless but i have had worse pain at the dentist. My procedure once they inserted the probe and took the first sample lasted maybe 4 minutes. Just before they start i suggest you ask to go the bathroom on last time just in case. And my test came back negative about 10 days later. Be prepared the first time you ejaculate after the procedure will be a bloody mess.

@gchodak1 I've seen a total of 7 doctors for this including 3 Urologist and 2 primary care physicians and 2 ER doctors and I have never received any solid answers for this. Most have simply said that I was "to young" to have prostate cancer. So biopsy was never mentioned. I do believe I have prostititis though because I have the symptoms except I have NO PAIN or burning during urination. And its red constantly throughout the whole stream. The blood loss is what really concerns me.

I was SCREAMING in pain on the table after 20 pieces of my prostate were ripped out. HORRIBLE. My Gleason score was a 9 tho' so out came the prostate gland. I went the Robotic route for surgery. My doctor left his practice right after my surgery and moved to California. I'm only 48 yrs old too. And nerve sparing? Ha. NO feeling, erection, NOTHING. At least I'm alive.
