The first thing I think Disney should do as a company is often the hardest thing to do for any company and that is to admit defeat and fault in their own mistakes within the company and also admitting that some of the legitimate concerns surrounding the company were right. Also probably announcing the full on stop of the Disney live action remakes, even cancellation of some of their projects and the 100% full return of their iconic animation studio. That would be a huge step forward for the company.

I attended Disney’s Customer experience Summit a few years ago in Orlando. One of the executives there made a flippant comment of “at this point, Disney can charge whatever they want“. They laughed, and all I thought about was the lawyer from the first Jurassic Park movie.
As long as they have that attitude, they will continue to drive people away. Their greed is undermining everything.

My biggest issue with the theme park division is that they seem VERY afraid if committing to a new project, that they are always doing "BLUE SKY" things, so they are teasing the fan base and promising stuff that may never come. It's like the whole EPCOT fiasco scared them so much they don't want to commit to anything and cancel it in fear of what the fans may say. Yet by the constant teasing of new stuff is annoying fans MORE than if they announced a project and cancelled it. Like we know they want to overhaul Dinoland USA , but the whole teasing aspect is obnoxious. Just say "WE DOING THIS RIGHT NOW!".

I agree. I see a ton of potential with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the fact that they want the visitors feel like they just walked into a movie. But I feel like this concept is still in its basic stage; I feel like they should give the visitors missions in Galaxy’s Edge to further immerse them into that area. For example, they could have someone walking around the land, recruiting people to Rise with the Resistance and contact the Resistance via a Star Wars Themed walkie-talkie or headset that they’ve gathered enough recruits to join the Resistance. Disney could make minor changes to the ride itself as well to make it more immersive like the Storm Troopers who are standing in the expansive room before the visitors board their trackless vehicles could close in on them because one saw a visitor doing something funny and the recruiter could fend them off while the visitors escape. The last one may be a dumb idea, but I feel like the other ideas would help breathe life into Galaxy’s Edge immensely.

Disagree. That is a part. However, the biggest issue is the lack of imagineering(not engineering). Formula:
Step 1: What attraction is least popular, "problematic," or costly for maintenance?
Step 2: What existing IP can we inject as a replacement?
Step 3: What's the latest ride system we can force a story into?
      Walt's Magical Formula:
Step 1: What's the Land theme?
Step 2: What story are we telling?
Step 3: How do we create a system to tell this story?

We've owned Premium APs since 1995 without a single lapse, nobody knows more about Walt Disney and the parks like I do, we've visited 7 of the 12 Disney parks around the world and were planning to visit Tokyo Disneyland next year. We have been extremely disappointed with Disney in general for the past 3 years for many reasons and I know I speak for many people when I say that if Disney has managed to make me feel alienated, can you only imagine how the casual fan feels? It's almost like they want to fail. They are learning the hard way that even the most successful companies cannot rest on their laurels and I'm afraid that it will only get worse...

The issue with Iger (one I've had for over a decade now) is that he's been so focused on obtaining as many companies and ips as possible that he's ignored the most important aspect of the Disney company, the creativity. Disney would not exist today without the creative mindsets we had through Walt and Eisner, and if Iger continues to lead the company as he is, then Disney will not be around in 20 years.

No wonder Disney has lost its identity-as Jack said in this video, "Disney is trying to be more like other companies, instead of other companies trying to be like Disney."

I don't want to pay extra to ride a ride that I've already paid for in my admission ticket. I don't want to spend my time in the parks constantly using my cell phone to get food or attempt to get on a ride that has a hour long wait. Pay to park your car in a parking lot? Disney has become arrogant, greedy and blind to their fanbase for several years now. As an ex Disneyland, cast member and ex producer at what you would call Disney corporate, I can see exactly how things got to this point. Walt Disney Company places are heavy emphasis on what they call “initiatives“ across all the business units. A lot of the problems that I see For both film and television and the parks seem to stem from this Fifth Key Initiative. The focus on inclusion, above all else, has resulted in lackluster story writing, which feels like a sensitivity training seminar, educational film, instead of stories, that will grab you, and stay with you for the rest of your life, as older Disney stories do. In the parks, the inclusion key seems to be aimed at cast members. This is resulted in large numbers of cast members who would never have lasted a week in previous decades, or who would never have been hired at all. On our last visit to Disneyland, I saw Ride Leads standing around in the midway, hands in pockets, having a long personal conversations with no regard to Show at all. There were attraction, hosts, delivering boarding spiels in an undecipherable, rapid, fire, sing song, Six Flags manner. We even had one male host, sporting red carpet, ready, overdone, eyeshadow, blush and super glossy lipstick slowly up and down, checking lap bars, as if he were on some sort of alt-lifestyle catwalk.
Somewhere along the way, this hyperfocus on inclusion has caused Disney to forget that the primary goal across the entire company is to give people things they will enjoy, not to enrich the self image of its own employees, or to teach their customers a lesson. I don’t think they’re gonna turn this around until they get back to Disney basics.

I have lived in Florida since 1998. I got my annual pass and have had it every year since then. I even kept it through the pandemic. It expires in January of 2024 and for the first time ever....I'm thinking about letting it expire. I'm just losing the "fire" I have always had for the parks. I'm thinking about using that money to get my first Universal annual pass. Wow...this feels sooo strange for me to say but it's on my mind right now.

If you have the option of still getting another one after it expires then let it expire. I know during the pandemic if you let it expire you couldn't get a new one, but I think that's changed now. But before it does, make as much use of it as you can so you won't feel the need to go back to the parks as soon.
It's not a bad time to get a Universal pass with Epic Universe opening soon, even if you have to renew before it opens. It could become harder and maybe more expensive to get one after it opens. There will probably be a lot of people getting them for the first time starting around August so they still have them for the opening date.

I used to go to disney parks every year, sometimes even more than once. Last August i was in Disney World and i never felt so bad about being there, it felt like i had to pay for everything in addition to the holiday and park tickets... this genie+ felt like a right rip off... what's they point in paying the most expensive park ticket, when you then need to pay separatly for rides??? who came up with that idea??? so elitist and quite the opposite as to what the REAL disney values were. The place also feels so "Samey", so much investment into new super expensive hotels, but very little in the parks themselves. There were many other things i can mention but, that alone, was a massive put off and decided not to go back next year. such a let down and, as you said, this sentiment has been shared with many friends and family so... brand damage. Let alone the fact the kids are now more excited about going to universal than Disney. Why is it so hard to admit defeat, apoligise to the fans and rectify it? I may be only one but, i am not going back to disney anytime soon.

I agree, either get rid of the public "Blue Sky" teasing and hyping on what MIGHT happen--or at the very least, be HONEST about what it really is: A "Let's see if the fans react well to this idea" section. Let's be honest: This year's Blue Sky has gotten MUCH more positive feedback than the previous one, so they should stick with the Tropical Americas land in Animal Kingdom, and the Villain Land extension of Magic Kingdom, and DO IT. Same for the appealing idea of the Mary Poppins ride for Epcot's UK pavilion--JUST DO IT.

We just got back from our 5 day trip. We've went 2016 | 2018 | 2022 | 2023 and this past weeks trip was the least fun we've ever had.. From cast members to the guests the magic is absolutely gone with possibly the exception of Animal Kingdom.. that was the only park where the cast members didn't seem like they absolutely hated life and fellow guests seemed to really be enjoying themselves. It was also by far the most peaceful day as well where there weren't so many people you couldn't barely walk past each other. DHS & Epcot felt like an absolute waste, Frozen was 140 minutes basically the entire time and Epcot is still basically a construction wall/walk in a circle simulator. We think we're going to do a Disney Cruise next year and just skip the parks for a while. We've always not wanted to leave on our last day because we've had so much fun.. but this time we skipped our last day (that was just going to be a resort hop day) and went home so we could have a 3 day weekend before we went back to work. We'd literally rather sit around in our pajamas at home than spend another day down there. We're going to give the parks a break for a bit. The cost is not worth it as of right now to us. 3 member family - Mom | Dad | 2 year old

    @jheiden2 Před 7 měsíci +4

You have a lot to say here.
My biggest point would be to hammer out Disney's current mission statement, and how it MUST change.
Disney = "More of the same"
More sequels, less imagination for movies.
More IP, less imagination at the parks.
You can pretty much apply this thinking with most things Disney does. And by squashing ideas within that aren't sequels, etc, they just keep making it worse.
I get that they were tired of trying new things, to just see them fall down. Everyone wants a sure thing. Who doesn't? But eventually you wear put your welcome with "more of the same".
Some of the best things Disney did at the parks were new things. Look at EPCOT (now nicknamed Magic Kingdom II). EC had Horizons, Universe of Energy, Imagination, American Adventure and others. Each was NOT based on IP. People love to discover new things they were not expecting. Yes, it's not easy to promote, but it adds to long term satisfaction. I don't want to one day see The American Adventure According to Mickey, though.
And some think Disney should stop making films. And as long as they don't change, then I'm starting to agree with them. They make so few films beginning around 7 years ago that I could care less about.
I can actually say I should have realized what the turning point was. Shutting down Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures was doomsday. To reinforce this, they justified buying Fox because they needed to diversify. Just exactly the way Touchstone/Hollywood offered.
And yes, without the movie/TV production side, they will exhaust their IP in 12-15 years. Might just as well break the company up the way Ted Turner and others hoped to do years ago.
Oh, and as for D23, if I were them, they need to immediately stop the "blue sky" session. They need to do what Steve Jobs and Pixar recommended. Stop talking about "future projects" that they haven't even committed to yet. In fact, stop talking about projects until construction has actually already started. Fans get angry to hear about a "coming soon" attraction that won't start construction for 18 months, but gets cancelled before construction even starts on. Sure, some projects get canceled late in the development cycle. But how about limiting that to RARE situations, not a common occurrence. After a while Disney gets ignored anyway.
Stop talking about a third attraction at Galaxy's Edge when it will probably never happen. Same goes for another Avenger's attraction that will probably never happen.
In fact, stop pushing "phase 2" (or more) on projects.
Oh, an stop chopping out huge pieces on budgets. We hate being shown these amazing things, and the best parts never show up just to penny pinch. When a new attraction is expected to last ten years, stop watering it down. Bring the goods to the table, for day one. Stop "over promise, under deliver".
Mean what you say. Let's face it, Disney wasn't serious about the Mary Poppins attraction beyond just a way to get guests out of the heat so they stayed longer to eat more food and especially buy more merchandise.
And the whole Disney community thing is probably a mistake. Not because it's a bad idea, just because it's a quick money grab by putting their name on it. Another case of watering down the Disney name/brand.
Go back to around 2013-2015, the "good old days". Less IP, less nickel and diming, great movies you wanted to see.
While I'm not a fan of Disney+, I am glad they did not purchase Netflix. NF has too much low grade junk. Disney is better than that, inspite of evidence to the contrary. Marvel/Star Wars and the other IPs they own each need their own Kevin Feige's running them on D+. As you state, concentrate on making the best story/film you can. Stop worrying about interconnection. If they are good, they can be connected later on.
And stop burning bridges with the fans. Never try to increase your fan base whole angering (and losing) current fans. Why make Star Wars & Marvel films aimed at girls/women, then act surprised the boys/men aren't interested. Eventually you will have ZERO fans if you keep going down that path. I realize Disney thinks they can expand this way, but so far evidence doesn't support it.

One point I disagree with is when it comes to sequels. There have been a TON of original Disney/Pixar films in the last 5 or so years (Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Elemental, Raya, Encanto, Wish, etc.) I think a mix of sequels and originals is the best as it allows for new IP with the sequels giving fans something to be excited for + bigger box office to fund originals

We agree about the Disney Difference, and that they need to go back to that. That USED to be an actual thing. Back in the day, the Orlando Universal parks had some interesting attractions, but they were NEVER Disney. Disney focused on the imagineering, the immersion, the creativity and supremacy of the story was evident everywhere. The Disney movies had better animation. The Disney rides and attractions had thematic immersion that tied the whole experience of the attraction together into a cohesive whole. Each of the resorts also told a cohesive story where every theming detail added to the story. These days, the story is gone unless it now is, "let's see how generic we can make it."

I feel like this relates to the hiccup Star Wars had with Obi Wan and Boba Fett. There was so much hype for both shows and they both under achieved the expectations of the fans. The ideas on both shows were really good set ups for a plot, and I was honestly intrigued in the begging two or three episodes, but after that I just didn’t feel connected to the stories. I really wanted Omega to appear in Boba Fett, but I’m not exactly sure if Dave Filoni directed\wrote the script for that show, so maybe that’s why she didn’t appear. Obi wan on the other hand had the ENTIRE Fanbase excited, and I fell like the finale\end fight just didn’t have a climactic weight, and it needed two more episodes imo. This is the opposite of Andor, which had me on edge every episode for more and more, and I cannot wait for season two! The animated shows are a whole other can of worms, but I feel like with live action Star Wars shows, it could either be fantastic, or just let down some of its fans, but I will acknowledge that Obi Wan and Boba Fett series have their fans out there. It would be really nice if going forward, Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars would listen to their fans ahead of time and release pilots like you suggested

I think it’s sometimes okay to have at least two films from the same studio release in the same year but they need to be absolutely careful about that. Especially if say, Pixar takes a year off from a new film release, then Disney could very well release two of their animated films to help fill that gap but I wouldn’t go too often and too crazy with such a strategy. It’s better to let releases really breathe and ensure fans aren’t overwhelmed with content:

Also Disney has rethemed too many classic attractions because they have this weird theory that it HAS to be a new IP. Most of these rethemes are eventually realized to be downgrades as the newness wears off. The IP isn’t what originally made these classic rides popular. It was the creativity behind them that made them fun. Disney seems to be lost on this.

Lines on lines and now people are moving away from the brand because of this. You see it in there movies and merchandise. A toy jewelry box from wish costs 50$ in Canada. It’s insane. You really think their political ideology is the problem? I mean he literally points out line by line financial and business decisions as the issues... But yeah the problem is Disney's "new" political and ideological perspective... 🤡

Thanks for taking the time to lay this out, Jack. It's insane how cluttered the summer movie schedule was this year, and how it felt like an endless slog of sequels. No wonder Barbenheimer blew the lid off the box office. And Universal's tentpole strategy paid off beautifully compared to Disney torturing its schedule to squeeze in movies every 3 weeks. Haunted Mansion had no business getting a theatrical release - should have been direct to Disney+.

The problems start with the cadre in the executive suite - proven over the last 2 years with the internally created drama of Christine McCarthy, the HR division, and lethargy of the decision making process. Once those individuals are gone and replaced with people focused on quality, storytelling, creativity, and making happiness instead of their own personal agendas, only then can the Disney company return to greatness and win approval of not only their fans but the public at large.

Great Video! I believe there is only one solution to this very real problem. That is new, fresh leadership at the top levels of the company. However, realize that Disney is selling out their hard ticketed events at extremely high prices. Even when these events are very stale. I was at the MVMCP on Sunday and it was packed. I believe Epic Universe will be the seismic event needed to make the changes needed.

It’s ironic that CZcams vloggers (like Jack) know more about how to make Disney successful than the company executives.

I go to Disney World then Universal each vacation and I could always see 'the disney difference' when going there vs universal but honestly it has shifted over the last few years. I definitely get more value and quality at universal now a days and it's kinda sad

Universal is willing to learn from its own mistakes and from others' successes. Disney is too arrogant to do the same.
