Great video as always mate! I have to agree with every statement made, the only thing i would add.
My own personal experience, having done my DM course over the last 3 years is as a DM, your skills should be that of an OWSI or above.
You’re demonstrating the skills to a student or students who may have difficulty in understanding how to do it, so you need to have a couple of options available for skills, say a mask removal for example, the way that most agencies teach it is the same way. But say a student isn’t confident in getting their mask strap back on…
Technically if they remove the mask from their face and replace it back so the skirt seals against their face, they’ve done the mask removal and replacement all be it without taking the mask strap off / away from their face. They’ve done what’s asked of the mask removal so they’ve done the skill. It may not be the ‘conventional’ way of doing a mask removal, but the basic skill is there in my eyes.
Now I understand that the end of the day, the certifying instructor has the last say, and I’d always get the student to demonstrate the skill again to the instructor in question, but I think that a DM and the instructor have to be able to be quick thinking and adaptable to accommodate for different skill sets as such. Where as, Dave the OW diver or AOW / diver what ever they may be, might get comfy within themselves and not do a skill right after say X amount of time in the water. That would be where the review dive with a DM or higher would be beneficial. And the DM or above being up to date with the latest training techniques I.E if you can do the skill in neutral buoyancy you’ll get a better mark overall

      Hey Dave
Thanks for this detailed comment. A few things to unpack there.
My point on DM skills is just that at first DMs have just learned a new way and right out the gate they aren't as polished as they will become after some practice. Just a natural progression. But I agree there is no reason a DM would have inferior skills to an instructor. Just a way to name it. Perhaps I need to rephrase that.
I like the creative way to help someone progress their mask removal skills. I think it needs to be part of a tool set to get the diver to complete removal.
I would feel more confident certifying a diver who in the end can completely remove their mask. No matter the steps between. A diver who can't remove their mask probably needs a little more time to get comfortable with all things scuba. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable certifying someone who can't remove their mask in full. Passing a diver using a technicality might not prepare a diver for situations that may arise. I've had a tight hoodie that was making breathing uncomfortable. I took of my mask then the hoodie and put the mask back on. The skill has a purpose.
But I completely agree that a DM or instructor needs a toolbox of ways to get a diver comfortable and that's a great stepping stone.

      @@WaterlineShorts completely agree mate!
I didn’t mean for the to come across in a bad light so I apologize for any confusion!
We do make the student completely remove the mask buy the end of CW5 for example, as they need to do the skill to the standards set by the organization, and the instructor signs them off, I’ve just showed them another way of doing it so they can then progress to doing it the way the instructor has asked, it was something I was shown by an Assistant Instructor, who’s currently undergoing their IDC as we speak!
As stated though mate, a great video, and I look forward to the next one!

@@dive_with_matt Thanks Matt. I get that. I always have to be quite clear in what I say. This is a public forum and often typed messages loose something in their interpretation. I do try to follow up as best possible so other who read these messages have no doubt about the intentions from both sides.
Ive learned so much from people who share their experience. I really appreciate you sharing yours.

Hey! I didn't know you were a scuba diver too! I watch your cave diving horror stories on your other channel. You're a great story teller with these different incidences.
The Jacob's Well stories are horrifying. I wanna visit there, as I live in Texas.

I disagree about the Divemaster level. It should be as polished as an Instructor. They should have already gathered as you call it a number of trick shots.
Remember the skills taught to Openwater students is the very minimum level of skills. After certifying they be practicing these skill so they become second nature. So by the time the take Adv. OW. There skills are done well. And are ready to add new skills.
I think divers are rushed to the next level to quickly. A minimum of 25 dives should be required to take open water.
