I wanna mention a few things, Mainly the aquarium thing, Just cause it's common misinformation that I feel needs to be corrected (and just some other things that I feel need correcting) . Keeping them in aquariums should generally be avoided due to the lack of fresh air it provides and the usually low roof. Because of their habit of jumping straight up if they spook at something they can break their neck. While they are ONE of the smallest there are one or two other equally sized species. They also CAN be incredibly cuddly hands on pets when worked with correctly but it works better if you start out with chicks. Lifespan is 5-7, But it depends on genetics and your care. They CAN reach 10+ in some cases. There ARE morphs where the males do not have a bib (my pfp is an example). They also should NOT be dying just because they're on their own. If they do then something is wrong. They also aren't "super" social, In the wild they live in pairs however I agree they should not be kept on their own generally. Super social would be like parrots who live in flocks of several dozen to several hundred in the wild. They can be kept in mesh/wire cages, If they are getting stuck/hurt than the mesh is too big or the bars are too far apart. The only thing is they MUST have a sandbox and or wood ledges if in a mesh floor cage so they have something for their feet to rest/nails be worn down. In the case of the sandbox they can have a tub with a lid and a quail sized hole to prevent mess. Trios are perfectly fine, They usually work quite well. Exceptions if the 3rd is actively being picked on leading to injuries or if being plucked. While bedding can work many kinds are bad for the birds lungs, It's better to use safe sand or soil. (plus sand can be cleaned like cat litter so will last you WAY longer than any bedding). On average they should not need tons of supplemented calcium, If they do then their base diet is not properly formulated. They also shouldn't get sick from getting wet, Mine will literally bathe in the finches bathing dish (Although yes babies should have marbles but it's best just to get a quail chick waterer in the first place). Fake plants are nice but not an absolute requirement and some can be unsafe. Fighting the female is usually just a territorial/dominance thing which is why flocks need a bit of monitering as some males are aggressive towards females who aren't their mate.
This guide covers all basic info and I highly suggest reading it (especially if you're in the comments thinking about them as pets.) www.backyardchickens.com/articles/button-quail-care-guide.77178/
I’m thinking a cage like a reptibreeze would work well, or if you have to go with a glass tank for whatever reason, getting an exo terra or zoomed one with ventilation is just fine for air circulation. I’ve kept chameleons (which I would think are even more sensitive than quail) in them with no problem. If you wanna be extra careful you can either get an air pump for a fish tank and run the tube to the bottom so there’s always airflow through the ventilation. Or you can also get a computer fan and place it on the top screen to help pull air out. I did both at the same time just to make sure it was properly ventilated. Also the screen lids have enough give (they’re more like mesh attached to a plastic frame, not a straight up metal mesh) that I think they would be ok if they hit it, though they come in really big sizes so that might not be an issue all together if you get one that’s tall enough.
@@snakesonaframe2668 Another issue is that birds do not comprehend glass, so that just adds to the stress. If it’s an absolute emergency that is one thing, but in general it is not worth it to use glass enclosures.
@@chickensquailandbirds5650 Glass tanks are not okay. They cannot and do not provide adequate air supply and glass is stressful to them. Please don’t spread misinformation.
@@jlexoticbirds4134 Im not spreading misinformation yes glass tanks are probably not the best option but they are still an option. However wire bottom cages are not good at all it hurts and damages the birds feet and prevents them from doing natural behaviors that they love and it is cold and uncomfortable for them. Many quail owners (especially coturnix quail owners) think it is ok to keep them in wire floored cages but it is just cruel
@@chickensquailandbirds5650 Mesh cages are perfectly fine if they have places to rest their feet such as a dust bath and things to climb. Glass tanks lead to illness and early death due to the lack of airflow so yes it’s still spreading misinfo. I’ve kept these birds for 7 years and am very knowledgeable in their requirements etc.
I have had my button quail for 10 months now and found everything in your video to be great information for anyone wanting to get started with button quail.
Thank you so much!! (: Just make sure you get at least two quails!
I have two buttons one male and one female. She has hatched out four babies. She done good with the first two that hatched then two days later two more hatched. I seen her tossing the younger ones several times so I separated her from them and put her with her mate in a separate tank. Now all is calm again. Babies are growing fast. I will rehome them when fully grown.
Good luck with your little babies! They are so cute!
Quite a bit of the information in this video is false sadly.

I'm gonna turn my whole patio into a finch Aviary I think these guys would go good on the Ground clean up
Yeah that would be fantastic and super entertaining to watch. Did you ever end up doing it?
That would be nice!
Many thanks, I have been researching "what to feed coturnix quail" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (do a search on google ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my partner got cool results with it.
This was great, I've been looking for "keeping quail for eggs" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (do a google search ) ? It is a good one off product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
Brighter Days Aviary You’re really cool hope your channel passes 1 million subscribers I’ll be sticking around
I can't imagine anyone that would down thumb your video. I've cancelled one out with my thumbs up! I am here doing my research before I even consider setting up a home for button quail. Your video was very informative, it gave me at the very least the basics that I need to know as well as the pros and cons. Thank you! Your babies are adorable.
Thanks so much!! And youre very welcome! I am glad I could help you!
Can you please tell me where you got your quai@@BrighterDaysAviary
I'll be building an aviary this summer (for my 2 budgies) and I'm planning to get a few quails in there as well. This video was really helpful!
Thank you! And that sounds like a great idea (:
I've been obsessed with birds for awhile and the first bird I ever wanted to own as pets were chickens. Sadly, my landlord doesn't allow me to place a chicken coop outdoors. I've always had my love for these types of birds and I'm glad I found one suitable for me. The care guide is very appreciated.
Youre welcome! Thanks for watching!
I had the same problem with the landlord, did you get your buttons in the end?
@@SobrietyandSolace I didn't, although I would love a button quail eventually I ended up choosing a different animal. A rabbit, he's my favorite thing on the planet! I still am planning on getting some, just in a few years.
Good info. I based my decision on rather i was going to get them or not. I think Im going to go for it
Thank you! (:Have fun with your new friends!
You deffintly should
Calcium sand works good for them and they like it for dust baths as well.
Good suggestion!
Thank you so much. Literally best video I think I’ve ever seen in my life. No joke.
Youre so kind!
The issue with pine shavings bothering the respiratory system is also an issue with hamsters. That’s why I personally recommend getting Carefresh bedding. It’s soft, doesn’t irritate your pet’s lungs, and you can also get them in really fun themed colors like confetti, Christmas, and ocean-themed. It works excellent for rodents and rabbits, so I’d imagine it would work well with these little dinosaurs too.
Im building an aviary out of a big gazebo and i'm planning on keeping some button quails and budgies in it and this was really helpful
Be careful about Budgies, They are generally aggressive towards smaller birds. Also if your quails have access to seed, you need to figure out a way to keep the Budgies away because Budgies should be getting pellets and fresh veg as the main part of their diet.
Thanks for this video, subbed to your channel and planning on bingeing all your videos, lol. I’ve wanted to get into birds for a while and I especially love game birds. I went to a butterfly conservatory yesterday and they had button quail running around the greenhouse and I absolutely fell in love. I started researching them immediately and am so happy to hear they can be kept in condos or apartments. I am moving soon and when I have more space I hope to have some little quails share my home with me. Thank you so much for all the info!!
You're welcome! (:
Hi kid your doing a great job with your Button Quails. I suggest you give them Nape Cabbage whole leaves , the leafs will stay crisp a long time and they can pull off pieces to eat. They need some greens and I dry spinach is good to. It's easy to dry the spinach.
Thanks for the suggestion! And my name is Maha not kid LOL Thanks for watching!
Brighter Days Aviary Good post, kid.
I use a rabbit or small animal water bottle. They peck the silver ball and has clean water all day.
Thanks I wasn't sure whether that was okay or not.
I do that too xx
Great idea!
Late comments, but I have a couple o' questions:
1. Are quails recommended to be kept in pairs? Are they social to the point where they need another quail or they get depressed like rabbits do?
2. Would it be okay to keep my quail in my room? I'm afraid of them getting scared and jumping when I make sudden movements while I'm sleeping/come back home.
3. Do they need constant light or is it going dark okay once in awhile?
4. Since I'm busy with school, etc. am I able to leave them for a long time (about 8 hours) alone?
Sorry for the boat load of questions, but I just need to make sure I can handle taking care of the little o's.
Hello there!
1. Quails should never everrrr be kept alone like ever lol. They need a conpanion at all times! If you have one be ready to make everyone in your house go crazy because they will crow no stop, morning, noon, in the middle of the night etc and there crows are pretty loud for a tiny bird.
2. You can keep them in your room, just make sure your tank has a lid so if they get scared and fly they wont get out. They can get lost pretty quickly since they are so small.
3. They should have light during the day and total darkness at night.
4. Yes they can be left alone, just make the food, water is changed every day etc etc and make sure the two quails you selected get along well because if they get into fights while your gone you might come home to a died/dying quail.
I recommend watching my whole video as I go into much details on all these topics. (:
Alrighty thank you!
Hi yang lady, I'm from the City, NY City Bronx, just trying to be fancy with this "City" staff lol😅
Anyway I started my first ever incubator on a 08/02 with 18 Quiral eggs (probably not button) I got my eggs from the supermarket down the block lol, CZcams sold me a dream lmao, I am 50y old guy who was born in Russia, just saying, I promise it's not a threat 😂, today is 08/16 meaning it's day 14 for my eggs, but to be honest I'm not convince anything hatching 😅😅😅
I really like the way you present your information, it's most definitely my type of way and this little Buttons you got is 2 cute, I guess I'm trying to get some eggs if it's possible.
Thank you
Right after she tells us to always get even number of quails, she says she has 5 quails in the tank…and that its a perfect number. But otherwise very helpful details and information!
Doesn't help that the community is divided over whether to have multiple hens to one roo in colonies or to keep them in monogamous pairs. I have a bonded male pair at the moment and am wanting to introduce two hens out of the next lot of eggs incubating, but I think you're lowkey kinda gay for eachother so might have to just keep them as a pair!
Even numbers is not generally a needed rule. I have a breeding trio and have bred in trios for years.
Excellent video and very informative. Congrats on your little female brooding her own eggs. I've only seen one other person so far here on CZcams who has been able to create a comfortable enough environment for quail to raise their own eggs. It seems to be a matter of recreating a more natural habitat. Such as the plants and a more natural substrate. So that they are happy and feel like it is safe enough to hatch chicks. The average male to female ratio that the majority of breeders are suggesting is 1 male for up to 5 females, depending on the number of quail someone wants. I personally was looking at quail for eggs and meat as opposed to having chickens because of the rapid growth rate of the Coturnix Quail. The eggs nutritionally are far superior to the egg of a chicken. I'd imagine there are people in your area who would love to buy the unfertilized eggs. ;)
Thank you so much!
I did a 55 gallon button setup with plenty of levels, obstacles, and places to hide. Had my oldest female hatch a brood of 10!
this was so helpful oh my gosh! this is the most detailed video i have found and I literally have a huge list of notes after watching this! i have recently incubated Quails for my neighbor but I really didnt know much about them at all. they hatched about three days ago so Ive really been learning as much as I can over the past few weeks. I'm a die-hard animal lover and I've dedicated all my time to the three little babies that I have hatched. since you seem to love and adore your Quails 100x more than the farmers Ive seen raising quail on youtube, I thought you would be the best person to ask when it comes to giving the babies the best nutritional diet. would the babies eat the crickets and meal worms too? what are some other great protein and calcium packed foods? or would you just stick to the ground up game bird crumble? once again THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! i can see you love your Quails very very much! :)
Sorry for the late reply! The babies will eat the meal worms but I introduced crickets to them when they became adults. For calcium cuttlebones are great, also egg shells grounded up are a good source of calcium as well. And thank you for the kind comment!
Brighter Days Aviary no worries! Thank you for getting back to me though 😇 my little quails are all grown up now and are super healthy, handleable and friendly thanks to your video, best lil birds ever! Thanks again for your help! 😁
@@charyaya. Aww that is so good to hear! And youre welcome!! (:
"if you dont have a big home dont get a bird"
, keeps them in fish tank lol
The tank is actually pretty large for a tiny quail (:
Brighter Days Aviary Yes, that's why it's so low maintenance.
@@BrighterDaysAviary Even Petco recommends: "The habitat should be rectangular and at least 8 cubic feet".
@@benrozon7901 8 cubic feet is such a bad way to gauge area space. You can get 8 cubic feet in a 2 x 2 x 2 cage. That is equivalent to using Papa Johns large pizza boxes to make a cage.
@@daze8410 Extra deep dish maybe. Either way doesn't seem like much of a life.
I have button quails and I hatched 3 out of my 7 button quails
We hatched a few first but only one ended up hatching so when he was put into his home we put a mirror in the tank only a small one though and after about a week we bought 4 other button quails around about his age and he finally had some friends then we tried hatching again and two hatched one female one male then when they where all old enough we put them out side and in the same tank and they got along great
I have two males and am trying to hatch them some girlfriends. I am glad you managed to introduce different birds from different hatches at different ages and they all get along but I'll still be really careful of course
I have one male quail. I got him for $7.00 at this store that sells quails. I had no idea that quails are very social animals, so I only got one male. I put him in this cage that I got for my guinea pigs but it was way to small for them so I put my quail instead. I have had him for 5 - 10 months by now. I have had no problem with him what so ever. I let my quail run around my apartment, and he does not fly as high because I cut his wings. I also have this dog that he follows around my apartment, and I think that gives him company. P.S. sorry if my grammar or spelling is not spelt right English is not my first language Spanish is :)
Your next priority is to get him a friend! But keep up the good work, sound like a good quail mom.
How funny, English is my mother toung, and Spanish is my second language
why the fuck would you cut his wings?? that's animal abuse, gross and inconsiderate. it's like someone chopping off your fingers so you can't use them.
@@Vile They mean they cut the tip of their flight feathers off. That is exactly the same as you cutting your fingernails or hair, but you have to be careful to do it right and not stress the bird out whilst you’re doing it.
Thank you so much for allowing us to know everything about them! Thank you so much love 💕 😉
Youre welcome (:
The second I saw this I knew it was made for my type of caring, none of those stacked cage hell holes that have a grate floor
When you was talking about cricket's its reminded me onse upon the time lmao whem i was fighting with my baby mama pajama drama and got very upset i guess, because i went to some Petco and got crickets, she had severed case of insects phobias 😂😂😂
P.S.All I did is hayd them in a bag inside the house it was enough😂
I have one quail and she's lives perfectly alone, shes not "died" ever since I hatched her and her siblings she would attack the others and pull at them. I have tried too introduce her too both male and females but she's happy alone, she enjoys snuggles with me and I'm fine with that ☺
Thank you for the information about button quails! I don't know yet if their legal in my country but it's nice to have the information!
Youre welcome!
@@BrighterDaysAviary I'm really sad to know that my mom(yes I still live with my parents I'm only 10) I can't get button quails but it's good information to know for the future 😊
I hope you end up getting button quails soon! (:
Hey. You were mentioing about having marbles and rocks in the water container while having chicks, this isn't to stop them from drinking less but to make sure that the little ones don't get wet as they can become sick. Just thought I would point this out for anyone wondering as I've learn this from experience.
Mikayla Green she said that lol
Thanks! (:
I really enjoyed this video. I found it quite helpful, though I don't necessarily agree with everything. I am planning on buying button quail in the future, so I am trying to do my research in order that I can give them the best life possible. I would love it if you could make more videos about button quail!
This is a great video! I was wondering where you can get quails?
Thank you so much! I bought them from a breeder!
I just hatched only one bby and ordered new eggs. But she has been eating top fin chichlid foods Because it has black solderfly larvae and she is doing good. It's just a high protein crumble
I agree with you that get as big cages as possible for your animals!
Yep!
Fish tanks really are not the best option for quail. There isnt much ventilation, it can stress them out, and it is hard to clean. Fish tanks are for fish not birds. I would recommend a large guinea pig cage and you could add some hiding sopts and pine shavings at the bottom. Also buttons dont really fight to the death I currently have 4 males together and they just chase each other sometimes for like 1 minute but most of the time they are fine I guess it depends on the quail and how much space they have.
I’m going to order like 4 of them, but I thought they could be handled and grabbed more, now I’m sad because they look so cute and cuddly.
If you train from from babies you can
You can feed them worms by hand to get them used to you
Eventually they will be calm enough to climb into your hand for a worm
They do look so cute!
If I wanna keep them as pets but don’t want them to breed should I get two females or two males for them to make the least amount of noise and to be happy or can I just get one I have a rabbit lol
Dont get two males, they might fight
Get two females! (:
There's no S. One quail is a quail. 10 quail are quail. This video is 6 years old. Why am i only now seeing this? Thanks for posting sorry for correcting. Amazing video!!
You may have mentioned this already, but how often do you change the bedding/shavings? Does it get expensive?
I did! And about once a week. (:
I noticed the white quail has a wound on its head. But you mention how social they are. I've had trouble keeping males together...and sometimes females too. I've had to split larger groups and was only able to successfully keep them in pairs or trios (m/f or m/f/f). The space didn't seem to matter. They just seemed to prefer certain cage mates.
Yes she was picked on by one of the aggressive males. Some males are more aggressive than others. And yes just like humans they prefer certain friends more than others lol!
I have two incredibly bonded males, maybe too bonded lol
Honestly I'm glad to know i can't just get one ♡
Thank you so much for this video! How often do you clean their cage, once a month, or once a week?
It depends on how many quails I have at the time. Right now I have two adults and three babies and I clean it every 1 1/2 weeks, it will be more often as the babies get older. And thank you!
thank you for claryfing that! i'm considering getting quails as soon as i move into my new apartment and have been looking more into it for the past week or so. i felt somewhat discourgaged by people saying the quails would basically smell too bad to keep indoors. i was suprised, since my parents kept parakeets when i was a kid and i can't remeber them ever smelling bad.. ( by now i figure you can't really compare the two species, but just saying) you seem to be doing fine though, especially considering you sleep in the same room as them!
alice hasenkohl omg, I’m sorry to say this but you can’t clean it on that basis!
It needs to be at least every 5-7 days please if you have your quails please get more professional info (I’m rlly sorry)
I do videos on quail but I don’t wanna sound like I’m being a Hippocrate,
But I feel sorry for your quails if you have been following her information
(I’m not hating!)
@@AliceHasenkohl The reason people think they smell bad is that they’re so lazy they think they can clean them out once a month. They’re tiny, FFS, you can clean out one little cage at least once a day. I skip mine out 4 times a day and top up fresh bedding once or twice a week and then they only require a full clean out once a month if you are regularly removing waste.
I do it as much as I can afford to do ... I love quails
I own.......ah....I mean I co-habitate with
23 parrots from parrokeets to African Greys, and Cockatoo's. They are my life.
I wish I never got started having parrots. It truly is a HUGE commitment/sacrifice.
It is!!
Love this video
Thanks!
13:00 ......loose crickets are no joke - i had just over 100-150 in a bin with a mesh lid... 2 days later my cat got involved - i love my Theo but he was grounded until he hunted them all... i'm in a basement apartment - sooo many hiding places - random chirping for weeks - never again
What is the temperature in your room? Do they need a heat lamp? How often you change the bedding? Sorry lots os questions. Thanks!!
Room temperature is universally accepted to be about 20 degrees Celsius. Yes they will need a heat lamp the first 4 weeks of their life if you hatch them. Clean them every. Single. Day. Don’t be lazy.
This is really ultimate guide

Hi, my name is Julie I live in Melbourne Australia.
I have button quails in my aviary. I love them.
Today six out of 20 hatched nice healthy little quails.
There was one that seemed to be stuck in it's shell.
I left it for an hour the mother was sitting beside it.
When I went back the sweet little thing was very cold it could not walk just lay there with it's eyes closed.
I now have it inside I have been trying to feed it egg meal with a syringe, it has been taking little sips.
It's 1am here I have fed it all through the day to keep it hydrated.
I'm having a problem keeping it warm I don't have a brooder, I have a warm water bottle inside a box a towel over the water bottle and another one lightly over the chick. I noticed it has started to move but can't walk yet.
Any tips
Cheers Julie
This comment is about three years late, but I'm considering getting a couple females and was wondering how to remove the infertile eggs from them when they're trying to incubate them. Great video by the way!
Thanks! & you can keep the eggs their until their interest goes away. If you keep taking them away, they might keep laying them.
You can take them away right after laying it's no issue.
You should set em up in a outdoor run in the summer dont need to I just think they'd like it.
They can pick up parasites and diseases from wild birds.
@@YSLRD well it's better than being cooped up in an tank all the time. I've put my quail in outdoor runs for the day. Its incredibly unlikely for them to pick up parasites. I think it's worth the risk because it greatly improves the quality of life and the risk is incredibly minimal. Look it up many do the same.
That would be an interesting idea with more research!
I have a 100 gallon tank and my quail are very happy, my question is cleaning the tank? It gets nasty and cleaning with them in there is impossible. I put them in a tote but it stresses them out
You would need to take them out and then clean! (:
My female button quail were laying eggs and then they stopped. Do you know how to get them started again? Love your tank setup by the way.🐤
I’m new to button quail I have a hen setting on eggs does she stop laying eggs and how long after they hatch does she start laying eggs
How do you prevent the tank from
Getting mold. We got the tank and not even a week later it smelled terrible and there was mold. How do we prevent that.
Normally where there is mold there is moisture, so regular cleaning and drying is key!
Is it okay to set up a “coop” outside like chickens or no?
5 quail fit in 40 gallon tank? How big of a tank would u recommend for 8 button quail
Can this also work for California Quail or Blue Scale Quail?
Hello! I am not sure to be honest as I am only familiar with the care requirements for button quails. Of course, the cage requirements/tank size would need to be bigger and there might be different dietary needs. But I am sure other than that the information I provided would be accurate for them!
How do you add a quail to another when starting? I mean, do you have to let them get used to each other or just whoosh, put them into a tank and see if they like each other? Are there fights between new quails when they're the first quails to be living in the tank (as in you're making a new group and not have one already and just adding new quail to it)?
One way to do it is to put the quails together at night when its dark so they don't see each other but still hear each other, then in the morning when they do see each other they may think the new quail has been their all along. Just make sure you watch them of course for the rest of the day to make sure there are no fights.
Thanks!
Hi, I’m looking into getting two quails, my house is around 3,000-3,500 sq ft. Is that large enough for two quails? Also, have any tips on where to get button quail chicks? Like at a pet store? Or a professional breeder? Any advice would mean a lot, thanks. Also, is clipping their wings so they can’t fly a good option? My parents don’t want them to fly so just asking, also how do you manage the poop/pee? Also, don’t worry about space, we have a tank that’s about 4 feet long and about 2 feet wide. It’s about 60 gallons. Also, how much calcium (crushed oyster shells) should I put in at once? (Im getting a male and a female) Also how do I know if an egg is fertile? I really don’t feel comfortable with accidentally cooking a potential quail. Also how much food should I give them and how frequently? Also how frequently should I clean the tank? Also when I do clean the tank, should I throw out the bedding? Also, sorry about so many questions.
Hi! Most of the questions that you asked I have answered in my video(: but for the others; I don’t recommend you clip their wings. You should put a netlike meshing over the top to keep then from escaping. You can tell if an egg is fertile by the candling method. I would give them as much food as they would eat. Just make sure you don’t underfeed them!
Brighter Days Aviary alright thanks, I’ll make sure to keep that in mind
My apartment is under 500 q ft, I can't even imagine a house that big and am incubating eggs right now
What if you clean it everyday and it still stinks? And what can you do if changing feed/substrate doesn't help?
Thank you for this great video! Could you tell me where you put your quail whilst you clean out their tank? Many thanks :-)
I have a smaller tank I put them in while I clean. (:
this is what made me realise my male "king" quail is a button quail
I heard that you can use a guinea pig water dispenser for them, would that be ok?
I think that would be okay, just no water bottles. (:
@@BrighterDaysAviary Thank you. :)
Thank you for the information. I was considering putting them in with the Cockatiel, but you convinced me NOT TO. They are cute, but I have to rethink the arrangement before getting any. There would be too much poop from the Teils or it to be a good environment for them to walk in. Thanks again for taking the time to educate me.
They can only live with tiels in an Aviary setting, Otherwise the quail are likely to get hurt. Tiels can also not have seed as a diet staple, It's too high fat. The tiels need pellets and fresh veggies. Quail can have seed but they also can get overweight from it so they should get gamebird or hen layer feed.
Based on what you said am going to assume two Quail in a 90'50'50cm or 36'19'19in is okay
Do they have to have a male for example if I want 4 female do they need a male?
Thanks so much
Youre welcome!

They actually aren't THAT loud and it isn't constant. Mine call maybe every few days like that.
What about pine pellets for bedding?
Would you please measure the tank? It looks bigger than 40 gallon..
The better ratio for these birds is either 3 females to a male or 2 females to a male. More than 3 females you need to add another male. Ive had 2 females to a male in a 20 gallon and they did fine. But now I’ve upgraded them to a 40 breeder. The higher protein is good when they are young. But once they become adults and start to lay eggs then you can lower the protein to around 16% to 19% but make sure the calcium is higher. I use a chicken layer crumble. Since that food has higher calcium in it already for the eggs I don’t always have to offer oyster shells. But I do on occasion to help them keep their beaks filed down. Otherwise I sometimes have to trim the beaks.
Thank you for sharing!
My dad has an empty aviary and i'm gonna ask him if i can plop some button quail hens in there so i can use their eggs for cooking :) You said in the video that kepping just 3 may result in an outcast, but what about 3 hens? or should i get either 2 or 4?
Even numbers are the best! Also there eggs are super tiny so I am sure you'll be getting much food from them lol!
Okay 🇲🇽
what do you do with the eggs?
Can i use hay or straw as substrate?
If you use a wide, shallow dog bowl with mesh on top of it under your water dish it would be harder for wood shavings to get in the water.
Thanks for the suggestion! (:
i only have 1 quail ;-; my parents wont let me get another one to make it non- lonley .-.
Tell your parents companionship is a basic quail need like food and water!
@@BrighterDaysAviary I know this is old but I really like how aggressive you are in enforcing their proper care! 😃😄😄
And as far as noise two wouldn't deafen the household but they do chat morning and night like our chickens did
Of course breeding them is fairly easy they make a decent flock In a short time but they do tend to spook themselves
Muito bonita sua criação mosa
You saying about getting a home as big as you can, my Japanese and Chinese painted quail, are in a 25 feet long by 4 feet wide outside aviary, with a 8x4 indoor shed, loads of logs and rocks to forage in they live it
How nice!
Getting another 38 at the end of the month
@@jamesdimmock521 Nice!
When you take the eggs out, does the quail try to attack you?
No she doesn't.
i was thinking your tank was too small for those quails you have ,
I'm laughing as your buttons are dust-bathing in the bedding while you're talking about them not breathing in the dust from the pine shavings. Lol. They actually like dust and should have sand to bathe in. Also, the dust from pine shavings isn't what's unsafe about it. It's the natural oils in the raw wood before it's heated and dried. All pine that is processed for animal bedding is kiln-dried and safe.
Yes, they have a dust bath where they bathe in. In that video I took the dust bath out. (: Thank you for that information!
Can I use pressed pine pellets for the substrate? What about shredded paper?
It's honestly a much better option to use soil/sand. This video sadly is not all correct.
I wander if there’s anyone who has tried a bioactive tank with these guys....
Actually, yeah! People have, a quick google search is all you need.
Yes (:
Great 👍
Can I use this for chucker partridges? I am raising them for my SAE and I am looking into what to feed them and how to set up their habitat. (I would build a chicken coop like thing rather that a glass tank though)
I am not sure what that is!
No, They have pretty different care requirements
how often do they make call?
Do you think you can use a big plastic bin with no top?
They would fly out.
Great video. Just a comment. Quail is plural. So you have many quail not quails. I learned a lot from you.
Thanks for watching!
Are their wings clipped?
Que hojazos mas bonitos tienes ,saludos desde españa.
Not sure why silkworms are bad. They looked like they had better stats than any of the other feeder insects.
Silkworms are quite large and a tiny button quail will have a hard time eating them.
@@BrighterDaysAviary ah, thanks! Didn't think of that
I have button quails in a caje witch tank I should get for the button quails?
a 40 gallon breeder at least!
Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome!
its actually hard to imagine that people EAT these cute adorable things
Its hard to imagine people eating any bird they are all so cute lol!
@@maritsastuart439 Of course people eat button quail. Meat is meat to a lot of people. If they breed them they cull the males and eat them.
@@BrighterDaysAviary People dont eat buttons they are wat too small but some people eat coturnix quail but I still dont agree with that
My parrots make such a mess I'll just have these free range around my house like a roomba
Lol!
would 2 female quails and 1 male be ok for a 30 gallon tank and would they get along due to the odd number
Maybe. You would have to observe them. I would put them in a 50 gallon thought.
Where did you get your Quails
Great video, is an exo terra sized 18” x 18” x 18” big enough for 2 button quails?
- ( I was curious ,because the exo terra sized 18” x 18” x 18” is 25 gallons)
I'm familiar with exo terras but aren't those with the doors? Button quails need air circulation. Also I am not sure the one you are talking about has enough floorspace. It would need to be the same as a 20 gallon long.
Brighter Days Aviary ok ,I was wondering , thanks for info.
36x24 inches is minimum floor space for a pair
