Raise Button Quail: From Incubating Eggs, to Brooding Chicks, to Laying Adults

  • A complete how to get started guide in caring for Button Quail. From how to incubate them, to turning eggs, hatching them, temperatures to keep the chicks at, brood, cage enclosure you should use, their life cycle, when they start laying, waterer and food to use.

    I began feeding the ganbol quail by my house after my daughter died. There were several chicks this summer. These birds saved my life! The button quail chicks are wonderful.

      Someone gave my son some button quail eggs and he was incubating them. One has hatched and we dont know what to do with them after they all hatch. Youtubing what to do. Do we just keep them like pets?

    You need to change that cardboard after every hatch. I noticed it has poop on it, which can cause problems. Everything needs to be sterilized and clean at each set up.

      When they’re hatched by mom there is plenty of poop and zero sterile surfaces. How is this different?
      My chickens, ducks, and guineas all hatched happy, healthy clutches.

    Is the cage in the video their entire quarters? That’s in incredibly small for button quails. They need a much larger area and a lot of freedom to live a happy life.

      No that just where they were in the beginning. Agreed they need a lot of space especially when they become mating adults.

    I ordered a batch of 20 eggs from Etsy and they are currently in the incubator. I was going to let a male and female from the batch but my husband said they can’t because they are siblings. I’m not sure if they are. My eggs are different colors. Can they mate or do I need to order a new batch.

    how to teach the newly hatched quill to eat ,because i had experience hatching them using incubator but non of the survived because they didnt eat.

    How long do they need to be in an incubator or in a thermal-box after hatching?

      I think just till the leaves dry out. Maybe 5 hours. Just make sure they have traction in there so their legs don’t splay.

    Your button quails look way bigger than the ones I have. How much do your adult button quail weigh, and how much does a freshly laid egg weigh? I would like to compare to mine

    I was under the assumption you needed 30 percent protein game bird crumble to keep them healthy, have you had any issues with the chick starter?

      We always add in mealworms for extra protein.

    You should not turn the eggs around themselves they should be turned to a different position if the incubator is manual I lay them flat in my manual incubator and sweep them with my hand from right to left and vise versa.

    I've never seen anyone turn eggs by spinning them. Did they hatch? With all poultry and pea fowl we turn them by putting big end up , small end up, big end up, small end up. and we start doing that as soon as we gather the eggs to incubate them.

      Hmm yea most hatched. I kept looking into whether I turn them over or spin them and never got anything conclusive.

    One of the chick is developing splay legs. Hope just temporarily. Cute as a button!

      Make sure the floor you have them on is not too slippery. I’ve heard putting them in a narrow cup or something might help with the splaying.

      @@hannaparker5434 yea we had 8/10 hatch. Just make sure to stop turning 3 days before hatch, so around day 13/14.

    I keep the eggs with the parents and they raise them and even feed them with their beak mouth to mouth 😊 the love cucumber 🥒!!

      @@Famvestor yes !! I wish I can give you the video, but I am not sorry on CZcams on how to share videos. But the male and the female, both incubate their eggs, and also feed them. The place where I purchased them originally the sellers were saying it is not common for them to do that but I believe that they just bring it up so fast they don’t really care to nurture them. I had mine for four years! Eventually they kept on having babies and I had to sell them. I now have a new couple, and they did the same thing. They took care of their own babies and fed them.

      I’m not an expert but you can look at genirals and tell. Also males have the white beard.

      Yeah medicated feed is not good for button quail that small but that's for chickens so I think that's only about 18% protein button quail or smaller They need about 30% protein I use the game bird protein starter feed It's Purina . Though your feed should at least be 26%. I have 100% brooding rate and my first time hatching in an incubator I had 85% hatch rate also the incubation period is about 16 days not 20. Also it's extremely difficult to get a surrogate for button quail hatched in an incubator even if it's their own chick They will attack typically unless they incubated their own eggs recently and are brooding what they hatch themselves

    Guess you turn them yourself. Also you will find same aggressive behavior when you introduce them to the adults as they form flock families. You also need to build an appropriate outside coop.

    If you hatch them the parents won’t take care of them????? You have to let the female sit to hatch them to take care of them that was common sense
