Thank you so much for this! I always have a hard time with darker complexions which makes me sad because it's really pretty when you do it right and not only have you don't it perfectly you taught us how to :D
Same this was the reason why I only draw white skins bc I was scared that I could offend people If I didn't get it right and now I will try the tip to mix my ocs bc it honistly is boring with blue, Grey, purple and white skin
artist here, the trick is to mix hard and soft edges and to know where each of them belongs, you can even use the airbrush if u know how and when. if u want skin to pop, add a subtle highlight with an airbrush at the very edges, this will give off the illusion of reflecting light everything u do is good as long as u dont shade with black
Hello, here to share a tip! Don't zoom in too much while painting and don't obsess over every pixel. Painting with no zoom is in most cases better because when the painting is complete, the observer won't even notice the fine details that stressed you.
@Tartaglia The 11th Second this; zooming right in and obsessing over small details does more harm than good. I'll also add not to get too caught up in getting things 'perfect'; perfection doesn't really exist in art, so its better to be bold and make mistakes than being timid from a fear of failure. 👍
Don’t zoom in so much, the viewer sees the big picture and not the fine details. I understand wanting to fill in all the white pixels but don’t go overboard
I'm so happy that you showed how to do darker skin too!!! As a black person I don't really find many people talk about it (I probably would if I looked it up tho lol)
Another important thing to remember when drawing darker skin is that Darker skin is more reflective. instead of of Only using a lighter color use ambient colors! If your character is outside and the sky is clear make the highlights cooler and more blue-ish:D
I'd reccomend using the gaussian blur filter, it's still not perfect but it can give a smoother blend. Or if you want a more rough blend use the watercolour or oil pen and set the colour mix really high and opacity lower (
My dad had me make pallets when I first got into digital art and it’s probably the best shortcut ever. Not only does it make your coloring recognizable but everything is harmonious because you’ve put everything together already! I highly recommend making your own color pallets, it’s seriously underrated.
could you ever do a tutorial on blending one day please? i’ve always had difficulties on blending it out and if there’s like a direction or specific way i should do it. but overall, these tutorials have been extremely helpful, thank you !
Istg they are the only person I’ve actually learned something from that I will and do now use that actually works even my actual art teacher didn’t teach me this well
I usally use a really red blush, no matter what the character is, and I still use that for the shading. I feel like it makes my art unique when I have really warm-toned shadows.
holy cow this actually helps so much ive struggled coloring skin for as long as i can remember, and seeing someone just do it as simply as this really just helps. thanks so much!
I think this is a really good starter tip but it's good to keep in mind that darker skin gets more reflective. You can do a lot of beautiful highlights with that.
As an artist who learnt to shade skin this way, when I started cosplaying I ended up using the exact same techniques for contouring my makeup. I just think it's really cool the same technique is used across mediums like that
I'm so happy that you used both like and dark complexions because I'll the examples that I was shown in art classes were of light complexions and I had to try and figure out dark complexions on my own.
Thank you so much for this! I got a drawing tablet and I’ve been having so much trouble trying to figure out how I should color my characters and I just get stumped. This totally helps!!

I recommend a soft watercolor brush :D it works better at lower opacities
i use the basic mix brush and sometimes the blur brush. they can blend really well, u just gotta learn how to use them, same with other blending tools
