I tried studying 6 of Rella's lighting scenarios to better understand her techniques and to use it to fix my lighting problems. In Japanese there is actually a name for what you called dappled light: komorebi (木漏れ日), referring specifically to the sunlight filtered through trees. That's probably why it's such a common theme in a lot of japanese media and illustrations

Most of Rella's illustrations really have a good balance between the Japanese anime art and the Chinese style of semirealism! A lot of the lighting techniques she uses are shared amongst the biggest Chinese artists, and I'd be really interested in seeing you try to break down some of the techniques from chinese artists as well

Having the technical knowledge but missing an understanding of fundamentals I think is something most of us struggle with. Seeing you improve throughout this video was beyond incredible! The Color and Light book is amazing! I've been studying it ever since I got it and I feel like I've been improving a lot. You've made a great point in this video. It's not just technique that's important, it's being able to look at the world and understand how light and shadows work. So many beginner artists end up not improving because they refuse to learn the basics and instead get stuck searching for the perfect brush or perfect program. Great video!

Your videos are always so awesome! It's amazing to see how you bring all your inspirations into your artwork and really go deep into the analysis of techniques. It's the kind of content we really need more of for anime style illustrations, there's plenty of books with theory out there, but your videos make it so much clearer on how to actually stylize it. Your rendering has improved a lot after each video as well, but I'd love to see you tackle more complex compositions in future videos to push your art to the next level!

The way you edit and explain stuff is what grabs me like no other youtuber, thank you so much!
After seeing Rella's work, I have no doubt, he uses gradient maps.
If I had to summarize his workflow it would be:
1. Color sketch with light source.
2. Sketch.
3. Lineart.
4. Flat color and 1 form shadow flat (Sometimes Rella doesn't use this shadow)
5. Soft airbrush light, this process is important because here Rella chooses a main point of light, for example if she chooses the face she gives a light touch of light with the airbrush).
NOTE: Always her shadows and highlights are in a warm tone.
6. Develop the light from point 5, the further away from the point the less light reaches the area (something that Rella is very good at is giving volume with the light).
6.5. Unconventional and small light shapes .
7. Gradient map warm tone for light.
8. Gradient map for shadow (and maybe use curves in case the gradient map gets weak).
9. Light particles and details to balance the image.
10. Composition (glow, blur, image clipping and noise).
PS: Although the background is important in his illustrations, it would not be unusual for him to work with a black background to make the lighting work easier.

hello! i have a few questions regarding your comment:
1) what is a shadow flat? just the shadow color in a multiply layer?
2) how to do the shadows and light in warm tone? what if the shadows and light are on layer settings like add or multiply, how do you make warm?
3) on the soft airbrush light, if the focus is the face, will the airbrush be all around the face? or gradient from chin fading to forehead, etcetera?
@@solandis0175 Hello, as an annotation they are only my perceptions, I don't have the truth and if I wrote a lot is because I drank a lot of coffee.
1. A flat shadow is simply a linear shadow (without gradient) and with a single value, as I said this step is optional and depends on the scene you are drawing (if in the composition "the light is the protagonist" there is no point in using this shadow, the best in this type of scenes is to use a layer to darken the whole image and in the following steps just draw the lights).
NOTE: Here let me make you a note, it's ok to use the blend modes of the layers but sometimes we make the mistake of focusing too much on them and use the black color in a layer with multiply blend mode, it's a good method but I would encourage you to stop using it because instead of familiarizing yourself with the color palette to find for example a dark red you go the easy way and just choose black and paint on a multiply layer (see the problem, you are not learning the value of the red color that should be used to give you a certain effect of shadow, light, etc).
2. If you study shadows and lighting theory you will know that even if there is a shadow it can have a warm or cold tone, the warm tone is more towards the red/orange/coffee colors and the cold blue/grey, one way to understand this is to see it like the white balance (wb) value in a camera where depending on the WB value will be the tone of the image to be taken. Now about how to apply this effect with a simple layer and a solid color with the desired tone and obviously controlling the opacity (can be 5% or 12%) you can make the effect, I personally use gradient maps in light mode and that serves me to change the tone of the image and an opacity of about 12-15%, for this same reason is that I say that Rella uses gradients map (to modify tones of flat lights, flat shadows, general composition and final composition).
3. About this point and the others above is complex, because everything depends on the composition that the artist is looking for, for example an image with a close up to the face you can use a fine brush for areas with more details (I think that in this type of compositions he does not use airbrush), in a wider or full body image you use airbrush because we don't need a fine light that has to define a shape like a cheek bone so if you want the light to fall on the face you use it on the WHOLE face and splash a little on the chest or arms, I commented that he uses airbrush because it allows you a soft gradient/diffuse control of the light on the edges (but it is so subtle that it doesn't create multiple light values at most 2).
Looking at it in perspective and as a conclusion if I had to define his lighting style it would be the following: "Rella works the light and shadows as if he was painting a grisaille, ONLY without grisaille which allows him to speed up his process and deliver a faster work at the same time that just shows that Rella had studies and lots and lots of practice with grisaille".
So my friend, if you want to be like him study light and shadow theory, Hue Saturation Value, grisaille shading, grisaille coloring. And then with years of practice you will be able to omit grisaille in your process and paint like Rella, on this subject I recommend you this artist who also uses grisaille and I encourage you to pay his fanbox to see his files (I'm raising money to do the same xD): "kionaoki".
Also as I said in point 3, everything is very subjective, as you can see that Rella makes corrections of shadows and highlights at each step, so I don't rule out the use of a curves layer to adjust even more shadows and highlights.
And if something is clear is that with artists there are no robotic steps or formulas, there are tools that they use and depending on the problem that presents the composition will be the tool used.

@@theELchiguiroactually, i have one more question, how do the gradient maps work for the shadow? i watched a speedpaint of the artist you mentioned, and when they used gradient maps, the place where shadow and light meets have a different color, and i am wondering how that was done. i use the program procreate, so i do not know if my gradient maps are different

It's very encouraging to see how people way above my level still have a lot to learn and these kinds of videos also help younger artists better learn from others' art themselves. Plus, the video itself is a great breakdown of a technique that counts as a tutorial itself. It's learning along with your teacher, bridging the gap between experienced and new artists!

I think what makes Rella's work so striking is their confidence in several art fundamentals, from composition to lighting and colour theory as well as the dimension added into their work, and it's really impressive how you also managed to see what aspects in your own test pieces weren't working (such as the night sky drawing coming off as a bit awkward due to a stiff pose). These breakdowns are really helpful and it's super enjoyable to both learn from them but also watch you grow as an artist from them
Though I think another thing which gives Rella's art that magic and completion is how they work with shapes. Their Miku pieces use her hair to create more shapes and dynamic movement, arms reaching out to add another layer to the composition, dancing -- maybe that could be another interesting thing to study!
Although his focus is more on western digital art, you might want to look into BoroCG's paint over series, which helped me identify flaws in my own art aswell (especially in terms of lighting and materials)
