- The state of playing PlayStation 3's free online is in an interesting situation these days. You've got games that are completely broken, or they require alternate accounts, maybe the online pass still hasn't been disabled.. these lingering issues are making it difficult to jump in. But on the flip side, you've got restoration groups bringing older titles back online and making it easier than ever to reconnect. Here's our updated look at the console in this wonderful 2023 year! And shout out to Melissa, her intro came out better than the lame scripted one I came up with.

@@diamondarrow4567 Why? These companies make more money in one day to keep those servers online for hundreds of years. So because they lose a decimal of a fraction of a percent of their profit it's understandable that it would be shut down. I don't find that justifiable at all.
@@danbooke2001 its not just losing money its mostly security issues as time goes on u dnt want to be at the end of a lawsuit because you failed to maintain an old service while ur focusing on the new and either way not every company is making enough money to keep servers up… not every game dev or publisher is triple A like Activision and such

The situation with Skate 3 was a rare occasion where the servers were shutdown but then brought back in 2019 because Skate fans are very persuasive I guess

Actually, on that note, I’ve had that issue in the past with Zombies, where people would either quit multiple times like that or just not ready up at all.
Been sick with covid the past weekend and took my PS3 with me in isolation. Had an absolute blast playing some classics and browsing the old store.
I had a PS3 and my brother had a 360 back in the day. Honestly, I always felt the online gaming experience on the 360, even compared to today, was top tier. The notifications, the party invities, it always felt you were just a click away from a thriving online community. I don't get that from the Xseries or the PS5.

@@Moli05 or even plays online anymore. I used to play my Xbox and my 360 online all the time. Now I won't touch an online game if you paid me. I only play the single player modes, campaign, or story. Haven't touched anything but single player experiences for almost 15 to 20 years now.
I feel this especially with the golden days of halo 3. There was just so much for the community to give with that game always fun stuff to do and there’s just not many sandbox games like that anymore or maybe as a hindsight the big sandbox games were a era/phase of games that our generation really loved and it’s different to what the new generation (majority of gamers) love
@@joesmo8086 Halo was so much more fun back then. The community was more creative and the content was awesome. Now multiplayer games are just about leveling up battle passes.

The biggest strength of PS3 over 360 on regards to online was that IT WAS FREE!
Simple as that. Xbox did an economically great decision by forcing online to a subscription.
But we the consumers have suffered for 3 console generations and PS users for 2.
Your last PS3 video inspired me to try and repair my PS3 which to my surprise I was able to do. Now I've started collecting and playing games I missed out on, but now I'm completely hyped with all these servers coming back online that I might be able to get the 10k kills trophy on Resistance 2 and finally get the Platinum for it.
I don't think the Res 2 servers are online anymore, are they? Let me know if they are. That might motivate me to plug the ol' PS3 back in too and plat that game :')
You should be warned that PSNprofiles do not accept trophies from custom created servers
@@thomasnielsen5580 that's pretty stupid it's not like these are modded servers that you can cheat the trophy in, but I guess they can't really differentiate between a private server for cheating and one being used legitimately to unlock a once unobtainable trophy.
I have two dead PS3s. One died because of an electrical storm, the other YLOD'd after a few years. I wanna repair them, especially my YLOD'd one because ot was my second system that I had most of my trophy data on. Dunno if they're still fixable after all these years

I think a huge part of the problem is that temporary password BS. It discourages people from wanting to go through the trouble just to play online which shrinks the number of potential players
If it was functional enough it wouldn't be a problem. What I do is I enter the new code into the PS3 dictionary so that I can just copy and paste it if it for some reason disappeared from the saved login. The website it relies on is terrible, contradictory and buggy. All my codes stand as Unused although they are very much in use, and the temporary password things for 2FA is just confusing. You can throw them away immediately since they have nothing to do with PS login, just the account login and there you're better off with SMS. And from many tries and many failures, it seems that you need sms verification to be able to log in on a PS Vita despite that it shouldn't be so. Another thing that shouldn't be so is their statement that "you just need to login once with this device code, then you can log in with your normal PS password". That is absolute falsehood because it hasn't worked a single time on any of my devices.

- The Vita won't let me in despite correct code and generating new ones over and over. The only thing that works is to accept sms verification, after which even the last code that failed suddenly gets accepted.
- On the subpage for active devices, it just says "My PS3 system", which you can rename. But if you deactivate it, activate another console somewhere (which then gets the "My PS3 system" tag) for a while, deactivate it and come home to activate your standard PS3 again, the label you entered previously is gone and the only way to keep track of them is to rename the console immediately after activation. They don't even save MAC addresses or anything else unique so that you may keep track of it.
- All codes stand as "unused" although they are in use.
- "After you have used the device password once, you may log in using your ordinary PSN password". Again, falsehood. That has never ever worked.
And so on. There are numerous ways they can make the website better, but I believe merely reminding them of it and what needs to be done triggers the knee-jerk reaction that they find the whole console and infrastructure ancient (which is partly true) and that they would rather shut it down than let one engineer spend three working days on getting it fixed.
PS3 is such a nostalgic console for me. So many incredible IP’s were born on that system. It was the Golden Age of COD. The countless gaming memories made on it will last with me forever. It’s really sad seeing the ghost town the online is now especially when thinking about it at its peak. Crazy and scary to think we’re only a short few years shy of the 20th anniversary of the PS3 launch.
I'll never stop playing on my ps3 honestly. It's eternal. Games like MW2 GTAIV, Black ops2 all are very special and still fun. Not to mention i still play PS1 and PS2 games on it.

@@BUPMY1 My CECHA00 (Japanese 60GB PS3) with full PS2 hardware is still going strong but to be fair, it's probably because the previous owner made it dust free and did the whole delidding process like Ryan has shown in one of his previous vids that helps keep the temps down for the launch models.

Technically all PS3s are backward compatible. I download the games from the digital store. Mine is a slim model.
Love going back to PS3 games. I am currently replaying the Resistance games. They haven't aged all that well but man, it's just so fun. Currently close to finishing the second. Can't wait to jump back into the third. Gaming on PS3 reminds me of the simpler times, nostalgia overload whatever game I pop in.
Played through them all last year and was a blast. I am cureebtly playing infamous and I can say, I had more fun with resistance and the graphics and mechanics aged better in resistance games as well imo.
It's a pet peeve of mine when people say that something doesn't "age well." If it's still fun, it's still fun.

Most games are going strong depending on the time. Sadly though the modders have killed alot of games, they are a discgrace.
Its sad to see the online pass is finally killing games and allot of the online community are leaving on most games.
These games have a special place in my heart. One day they will all be gone and that hurts to think about.

@@LAGator-qu7tc Really? They ruin multiplayer and push people off the game. No one want to play with cheaters and people using aimbot. It kills the player count of a game. Than once its dead the modders get bored as there no one to mess with and cheat on, than they go to another game and kill that one. People who play on old consoles might not have money for a new one. So they play what they can afford or they just want to have fun. They cant do that with cheaters. Those games player counts will never recover as no one wants to bother trying as its brobably filled with cheaters or its dead because of them

@@LAGator-qu7tc No hacking is different than modding. Modding is modifying a games funtion, like using in game assets and code for exploiting a game. Hence it being called a mod menu, not a hack menu. Hacking is ddos attacks, ip pulling ect. Wich is also an issue.

It's likely. Online restoration is currently being brought back to several consoles such as the PS2, DC, GC, Wii, Wii U, classic Xbox and PS3. The 360's version of Live is too difficult but the Vita has a chance as long as someone is interested since I doubt it's too different from the PS3.
Though starting with the PS4 and Xbox One, I doubt we will see PSN/Live emulation in our lifetime lol.

Ryan I absolutely love that you do these videos. Your 2021 version of this video made me go out and buy a PS3 after selling mine years back. I upgraded it to a higher storage SSD and games load slightly faster. The PS3 is associated with some of the best parts of my life and I love to see that there’s still people playing these systems

There is a guy who has been working on reviving ps home. Look it up. I think he has gotten as far as getting people online in a sorta alpha phase. Think Ryan covered it but also it’s easy to find info about it.

Same, original Uncharted 3 Multiplayer I probably put about 2,000 hours in, and I’d love to play the first Motorstorm online again! Favorite off-roading game by far.

Recently I gave been more active with my PlayStation 3 again and have been thoroughly enjoying LittleBigPlanet 2. This video has rekindled my interest in some games such as the Mass Effect 3 multi-player, Need for Speed Rivals, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift and SOCOM: Confrontation. Will definitely be playing some of those in the next few weeks!

Mass Effect 3 has a pretty dedicated online fanbase. A lot of people were dissappointed with a lack of ME3 Multi in the Legendary Edition.
I cant believe people are still playing ME3 online coop! I am going to try to play it on PC.

I bought a sealed copy of metal gear solid collection on PS3 last month and the code for MGS1 worked. I think its date was sometime in 2015. I also had a copy of God of War collection work so I could claim Chains of Olympus/Ghost of Sparta. They do sometimes happen in 2023

I acquired an old code for a ps4 dynamic theme and it’s expired. There is a reason why they don’t care about the ps3 in any way, it was an embarrassment financially and the security is abysmal.
Are the GoW games the Vita versions? I have an original (bought new) disc of GoW 1&2 Collection but I never saw a code for the other games.
@@kimchi_b psp versions but converted to ps3 and vita for ghost of sparta and chains of olympus ps3 versions would be god of war 1,2,3I had the codes for the gow collection for the ghost of sparta and chains of olympus. But mine was pre owned. So they didnt work when i use em. So i purchase those two seperately on the ps3. Not gonna lie tho i played ghost of sparta on the psp back then i had a hard time dodging enemy attacks with my big fingers. I may have better luck on the ps 3 controller lol

I absolutely love these videos, 30mins flew by. Was playing some PS3 myself the other night while a done an update on PS5, so this is good timing.
Back in the Days Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 2 and TLOU multiplayer had for the last 3 or 5 months all multiplayer dlcs for free, before the servers got closed
The PS3 was the first console I ever owned and I still have one today. I finally managed to get a PSN account recently and I’m going to try out some online modes on games like Call of Duty and things by EA 👍 It’s sad that some of the games are dying but it’s great that there are people who want to restore them. Keep making great videos like this 😀

I’ve noticed this issue too of loading into ps3 games where it might crash all the time in some games. Go offline, load into the game. If it works, try to create a local/private game, then when you load in, sign back in then leave and now you can enjoy multiplayer

@@gorepunk He usually did them at the beginning of the year though. He had a track record of releasing the PS3 Online videos around late January to early February, with this one being the exception in mid March. At the time I thought he cancelled the series since up to that point he was releasing the videos in that time frame, when he released this one I was relieved. Also the fact that in 2023 he didn't do a PS Vita video at all, when at that point he was releasing them in late March to early April. He may or may not do one this year (I don't know) but even if he doesn't, we have channels like MAWK3 so we still have people making videos on this niche part of gaming.

I did try dayz on xbox game pass I played it for awhile but I don't play it anymore I don't know why maybe because I don't have internet. I go to my nephews house because he has faster internet then me but I don't think I'll play dayz anymore tbh maybe I will start to play it again someday.

Man so many hours of RDR online. Love how it threw you right into the stand off , was such a great way to start a team game fun exciting and different every game. Sad the standoff didnt make a return in the sequel. Skate and the CODs brought back memories too
Been waiting for this years edition for a while. I still play PS3 online to this day and it’s pretty interesting seeing others react to the online community.
What games are still active online that you have?
@jid GTA 4, Black Ops 1 2 and 3 Modern Warfare 1 2 and 3 and Battlefield 1-4 PVZ:GW, Minecraft, Xenoverse, Red Dead Redemption. Those are just a few I have but for the past month I haven't really been active since I have exams so this could have changed.

I still play online from time to time and i still do enjoy games like (BF Bad Company, BF3, CoD4, MW2, Killzone 2, MotorStorm and etc.)
I miss the open voice chat lobbies that used to be more standard on ps3. It's also ironic that PS3 had more shooters than Ps4 and Ps5
It felt so much more lively than ps4 and ps5 that required you to add people and create voice chats for most games.
They could've gave users the option to disable lobby voice chat as an option to address any users that got annoyed with it
That Arkham Origins discussion is actually one of my friends. We took a few weeks and a bunch of us did the Origins online trophies. Was not fun in the long run to sit through the 40+ minute wait time. Multiplayer is still fun though, even if it was trophy oriented for us!
So he just had to wait 10 more minutes…
@@manukau5271 Possibly! I know we had a few instances where it was around 30 and a few where it may have gone into 50+. It’s a very finicky system. Even so, there’s almost no one there to actually play. As Mystic said in the video, it’s mainly for cleaning up those online trophies

I played some World at war yesterday. Actually never had any issues finding a lobby (EU).
What timing just got in my fat 80gb backward compatible ps3 yesterday. Haven't had time to really test it out, but I do have Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 06, and COD Black Ops. Gonna see if I can get in some online black ops zombies games tonight.

For arkham origins, you have to leave it on the error message for the 40 ish minutes instead of the "press start" screen. Should automatically pop up an autosave page then load you in. Love the videos!

Awesome video man socom series has a diehard following and I think it’s awesome to hop on confrontation on the weekends and green up and enjoy late 40s a little better
It's kinda funny watching Mystic tried to convince strangers to play with him 😆. Anyway, i'm still playing my PS3 but only for PS1 & PS2 classics and a couple of backlog. I tried to played COD Black Ops 1 TDM but it has plenty of hackers. Sadly the bluray drive is broken 😔
So sad to see how many hackers are ruining bo2. Miss the days when cod was actually fun

3:30-4:00 reminds me so much playing AC3 multiplayer on PS3 a year ago trying to get the online-trophies 😅 I spend more time in the lobby than actually playing the game but eventually I got it all done 💪 Pure determination and patience!

I wish Sony would make more ps3 titles backwards compatible I want to play dead space 1,2,3 socom, army of two resistance and other titles. Where can I get a ok ps3 headset. I like the skate 3 dude he was having me 😂😂 I am glad to see people playing online on the ps3 hopefully another decade more will see players online. This is amazing what “Ps re wired “ is doing, I didn’t know we can play ps2-3 games still online like that. I’ve been playing a lot on my ps3 lately ( not online) just games i never got around to playing like killzone and resistance franchises
SOCOM: Confrontation was the first real competitive multiplayer game I ever got into. Still feel that it has one of the most competitive/strategic atmospheres to it. What a throwback. Anyone who remembers that community, ya boy was the TILLY expert on the team. 😤
I’ve been playing a lot more PS3 games online lately due to how much a lot of games player bases have declined. Going for rare online trophies and enjoying nostalgic games before the eventual end for the PS3. After the changes and rumors with the PS Store and online features, figured it’s now or never with a lot of these games

Really cool to see this! Although I do notice alot more people use mics on PS3 then Xbox 360.
Going back to some of my PS3 backlog, since having it fixed and getting an adapter to use Dualshock 4 on it, with full Sixaxis and Vibration functionality.
Replaying Castlevania LoS, MK9, Dead Space, Puppeteer, Deadly Premonition, Silent Hill Origins, and MGS4.
I think I lost my PSN account to hackers. I think they set up 2FA, rip lost free psn play on PS3 & lost all digital games on PS3, Vita, PSP, & PS4. The dangers of a digital only world. Not to mention Trophies & everything.
Is being like 2 months since i turn on my ps3, but not to long ago i beat all ratchet and clank games for the ps3 and what a gem they are, they still look gorgeous in my opinion, i also beat Jak and daxter 1 and half way on Jak 2

There is a detail that k3rber0s didn't mention and it's that for the most part, people on the PS3 and Rpcs3 (the emulator) are able to play together. There can be some games that just do not play well with the emulator and those can be an issue.
I gotta say one of my most loved revival groups have been for the online portion of mgs4 and although it is full of some hard-core players it's still fun
I enjoy watching these that way I know what game's still have server's going
