2013 Nissan Altima vs Maxima 0-60 MPH Mashup Review

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The brand new 2013 Nissan Altima and the new 2013 Nissan Maxima are two family sedans cut from the same cloth. Of course the Maxima is Nissan's top of the line sedan while the Nissan Altima slots right below the Maxima in both price and performance...or at least so we thought until we tested both cars in another fun and informative TFLcar Mashup Review. There's of course no doubt that the Maxima is the more expensive of the two Nissan sedans. It also can be had with the more powerful V6 but what about size and performance and perhaps more importantly which car is the better driver. Check out this video comparison to find out which Nissan sedan is really the top dog.

I don't own either of these cars, but I know this is not a fair comparison. 90% of Altimas have the 4 cylinder option, and NONE of the same amenities as the Maxima. The Altima almost always has cloth seats, no heated steering wheel, no paddle shifters, etc. If you compare the everyday Altima to the everyday Maxima...the Maxima wins every time.

Actually the CVT doesn't hamper the acceleration of either car. However, having owned an 09 maxima I can say that there is a bit of an art to getting max performance. Simply flooring it gives slower times. Giving it about 3/4 throttle up to about 35 then fully applying the throttle is fastest. I have a video on my phone of my old maxima doing 0-60 in 5.5sec. These guys are doing it wrong

I'm not sure if you tried the manual gear shifting, but you can turn traction control off and rev the engine a lot more so you get to 60 in 3rd. By default, the car slows down the RPM to avoid wheel spin so that's why it's slower. :P It also tried to keep RPMs around 2-3k after first gear even if you floor it so you need traction control off and just shift up yourself for more fun.

These two are wrong on many things. The Maxima comes with paddle shifters in the S and SV model, as does the Altima. While the Maxima they tested here has a pretty plain exterior, the SV with the spoiler and upgraded 19" wheels is a lot nicer than the Altima. The difference between the exteriors is noticeable right away, regardless if you "know what to look for" or not. The Altima has a "cheap" and "cramped" feel to it.
The Maxima grips better and does accelerate faster. I'm not sure what type of moron would put a car in first gear and gas it until it hits 60, but if you were to accurately test these two cars 0-60 with proper shifting the Maxima would win.
The Maxima also comes with a 9 speaker Bose setup featuring 1 6.5" subwoofer in each door, 3 speakers in the dash and 2 speakers in the rear deck. CD, MP3, composite input, and a hard drive for saving CDs in included. The navigation package lets you play DVDs, but either option features the back up camera.
A fully loaded Maxima SV costs $39,000. There's nothing wrong with sport mode or the cvt. This is a "4 door sports car" as noted by the sticker in the rear windows and the transmission acts as it should for this type of vehicle. It is just as loud as any cvt, not better or worse.
As far as the comments saying a Maxima should sell in the high $20s-low $30s, you are the typical person that has no idea what a Maxima is capable of until you drive it. You think for $30,000 you can get a 3 series BMW? They start at $32,750. Have fun with a rear wheel drive, 180hp turbo charged 4 cylinder, "8 speed shiftable automatic". Which is also smaller in length, width and height and will have no premium options at that base level.
The Nissan Maxima is the best car you can buy for under $40,000 as far as luxury and performance. Any other car is going to compromise somewhere.

I thought this was a pretty fair review, right up until the end. I've had my 2013 3.5 SL for 3 weeks now, and I drive to work in Chicago traffic. It's already been through all types of weather, speeds, and traffic conditions, and I have had NO issues with the handling on this car. Neither did the reviewers from Edmunds, Car and Driver, and Road and Track. They all listed the handling as good to very good, and so do I. Maybe the reviewer is used to driving sports cars, who knows.

I have a 2012 maxima and I have beat a v6 altima older and the brand new. Raced a challenger r/t off the line all the way to 80mph and beat it off the line. Also have raced a 2012 V6 Camaro on the highway 55 in idaho from about 50 up to 120 mph and my max was faster ...I over took him on every straight. Raced a V6 mustang and won Raced a Pontiac gxp solstice and won. new maximas are dead even from 60 mph up to 135 with WRX sti. I raced one the first month I had my max and the guy in the wrx gave me a thumbs up at 130 ish. I paid 36k for my maxima brand new with all options in 2013. The ones that cost 40k should have a trunk spoiler and paddle shifters 19 inch wheels or the premium model with the double sunroof (this ugly red one as tested was way over priced) SV Sport is 38 to 41k. these guys suck at testing and pricing cars.

another odd thing: the heated steering wheel heats unevenly: nothing at the usual 3 and 9 oclock position, a lot at 4 and 8 (where no one put their hands), with only little heat at 2 and 10. Heated seats are too weak for the butt, and too strong for the back! Kinda useless since in winter, i usually wear a winter coat, but no winter pants. Its better than nothing but how hard is it to place heating devices at the rigth place?
