Fun fact: The wheelchair guy (Franklin Hardesty) was "in character" for the most of the movie and especially off-screen and the cast got so annoyed by him that the guy playing Leatherface couldn't wait for the part where he died to happen.

"If I have any more fun today, I don't think I'm gonna be able to take it!"
Fun Fact: According to John Larroquette, his payment for doing the opening narration was a marijuana joint.
Historical Fact: The film is fictional and based loosely on the life of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein, who was a sick puppy. There's plenty on the guy, just search his name.
Professional Actor Fact: Tobe Hooper allowed Gunnar Hansen to develop Leatherface as he saw fit, under his supervision. Hansen decided that Leatherface was mentally handicapped and never learned to talk properly, so he went to a school for the mentally handicapped and watched how they moved and listened to them talk to get a feel for the character. He also tried his best to make his portrayal as non-offensive as he could. Many fans including those who are mentally handicapped, say he succeeded.
MPAA Hacks Fact: Surprisingly, this film is one of the least bloody horror films of all time. This is because Tobe Hooper intended to make the movie for a "PG" rating, by keeping violence moderate, language mild, excluding nudity entirely, and having most of the horror implied off-screen rather than shown in great detail onscreen. However, this plan had actually backfired, and made the film even more horrifying. Because despite cutting and repeated submissions, the Ratings Board insisted on an "X" rating, and it wasn't until the film received the "R" rating when Hooper gave up and released it. Hooper had a similar ratings problem with the sequel.

Leather face is a direct inspiration from a real life serial killer named Ed Gein. He was a cannibal and made furnitures of dead people. Plus made a skin mask like Leather Face did.
He also became an inspiration of Norman Bates, where Ed in real life also had a crazy religious mother who said women are evil. Buffalo Bill from Silence Of The Lambs, where dresses up like a woman. Just like Ed Gein.

Considering the incredibly long, tough, arduous conditions of the shoot I was always impressed with the actors (among those who granted interviews) restraint from Diva- like complaint toward Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel (chief creators, Hooper directed). They were honest and forthcoming but never self righteous. Like good soldiers, they never made it personal. Rather, the thing that left a bitter taste in their mouths was their robbery by the distributor Lou Peraino of Bryanston Co. which was a mafia front company created to launder proceeds from the huge adult hit Deep Throat. Bryanston had other hit films including Chainsaw and grew notorious for falsifying playdate and box office reports. As the cast's payments were dependent on points participation this meant they were cheated by enormous amounts over several years. Eventually when Bryanston went under distribution rights for Chainsaw went to New Line cinema and the actors finally got some recompense but the big opening hype about the film had come and gone by then.

For horror audiences, this was #3. In 1967, there was NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with 'gore' being cannibalism ideals (scrambling over innards). There were tons of low-budget horrors before that but none reached national distribution. Then, shedding the low-budget constraints, 1973 brought THE EXORCIST to much the same audience and everyone's idea of what horror and fright - and disgusting scenes - were mixed together. Audiences did battle over LIVING DEAD vs. EXORCIST, but EXORCIST generally won some debates - after all, LIVING DEAD has some comic relief - EXORCIST had zero. And then, here comes TEXAS CHAINSAW where at the implication of gore was beyond LIVIND DEAD and the relentless of the villains (The Demon vs. Chainsaw family vs. Zombies Everywhere) kept the debate going. As 1975 rolled forward, Horror Audiences waved goodbye to Hammer Horror and were funneled into sequel-city... and knock-off copies (THE OMEN and THE HILLS HAVE EYES.)

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 It is in a very loose sense. Ed Gein in Wisconsin did rob graves to make furnishings from human parts, and killed a couple people. But that's about it. The cannibal family and leatherface were never real and the attacks in the film never happened. Quite a few people think this movie was a play-by-play of a real event and..no lol. The films documentary framing and filming style definitely contributed to this before the 2000s when you could look stuff up online. Though there are very persistent folklore/myths in some parts of texas "oh yeah my uncle was a guard at the prison they kept leatherface in" kinda stuff. The cook is the oldest brother by a good amount and is basically in charge of the house so it's easy to get that impression. Although it matters in discussions of their family dynamics because it changes how to interpret him if he's an older brother or their father. Most of my knowledge comes from documentaries, commentary tracks and a couple books but I'd like to get ahold of the original script [which the video game draws from], it has a few more family members similar to the 2003 reboot (also great but goes a different direction and is sorta nastier).
