Everything Hosts do to speak on the Internet - Part 1 - Networking Fundamentals - Lesson 3

  • Module 1 of the Networking Fundamentals course will illustrate the core of networking: How data moves through the Internet. In this lesson, we'll explore Internet commuication from the host's perspective. We'll illustrate EVERYTHING a host does when speaking with other hosts on the Internet.
We'll do this with two illustrations:
First, we'll look at everything that occurs for two hosts which are directly connected to each other do to communicate.
Second, we'll look at everything that occurs for two hosts to speak which are on opposite sides of a Router.
Remember, Hosts don't know what they are connected to. Our first illustration also applies when hosts are connected through Switches and Hubs. And our second illustration also applies when hosts are connected through multiple Routers.
These two illustrations will cover 100% of the scenarios that hosts use today to send data through the Internet.

I came across your channel by sheer chance and I won’t let go.
With your smashing narration and presentation, I have already understood basic concepts I had never, EVER, taken the trouble to look into.
Bad for me and shame on me… but it’s never too late.
Question as a true novice (still, extremely curious and it just popped naturally as a question): does this (seemingly ?) innocent, initial ARP broadcast present any sort of potential security liability for the host who makes it?
    Thanks and cheers.

      @PracticalNetworking  Před 2 lety +2

Hi again, happy to hear you're loving this series =). Please keep going w/ the rest of the videos!
Great question! And good instincts... the issue is ARP is "everyone" on the network gets it, and "any" answer is accepted. Which leaves the door open for a malicious host providing the wrong ARP mapping. This can lead to "ARP Man In The Middle (MITM)" attacks.

It is the most useful channel where I have ever subscribed, so many thanks for the free education opportunity! But I would have a question. Why only the last 4 numbers of the MAC-address are populated? Or did I missed something? Thank you in advance for the responses!

      You're very welcome, Attila!
MAC addresses are normally 12 hex digits. But I was only using 4 to make it easier/shorter for the slides (I mentioned this in the OSI model video).

does the ARP cache hold that info forever or is there a set time limit before it is cleared?

*Full Course Status: Wait and See.*
Hopefully you've come to realize that I put _a lot_ of effort into the content I create. I'm not a course creator that will simply turn on the screen recording and ramble, then call that teaching. I meticulously plan _every_ module and lesson to _maximize the learning and value_ for the student.
To that end, it takes me a while to put together courses. If I'm going to dedicate the time, resources, and energy to putting this full course together, I need to know that there is enough interest in the full course. I'm rating that by how wide a reach this series achieves.
*If you are interested in seeing the full course developed, then the best way to bring that to fruition is to spread the word about this content* . By itself it already conveys _a lot_ of value. So sharing even just the 7 lessons (13 videos) in this series will surely help whoever you share it with.
Plus ... many online communities would greatly benefit from these videos. Think of all the Internet points you could acquire if you shared this series (karma, likes, follows, etc.) 😉

Excellent video explanation. So clear and so easy to understand. Looking forward to the rest of the video course. My question is not later to this lesson or course but I am interested to know if you'll be doing similar courses on cyber security. Many thanks and keep up the excellent work.
