How Kurdish Cuisine Found an Unlikely Home in Nashville

  • In addition to being the home of hot chicken and country music, Nashville is also home to the largest Kurdish population in North America. Just off of Nolensville Pike on the southern outskirts of Music City lies Little Kurdistan - a thriving community of Kurdish immigrants and new generations of Kurdish-Americans. Southern Foodways Alliance presents "Little Kurdistan."

Welcome to Nashville! Kurds are, in my view, among the most highly evolved people on earth and especially in the turbulent Middle East. They are a tolerant, spirited and very peaceful people, 35+ million strong, and any community would be blessed to have them. I have considered living in Nashville, and the fact that there are 15,000 Kurds there makes it all the more alluring to me. Cheers.

Wow, I never thought I might have to give a basic History lesson to the ignorant simply because of a food video.
Austin Chen is correct - the Kurds are a distinct Ethnic Group.
For Centuries, they have been oppressed and victimised from all sides.
By the Ottoman Empire/Turkey, Syria and Iraq - yet their culture and traditions have survived.
They are the most 'moderate' of 'moderate' Muslims.
They are the ONLY people fighting Daesh on the ground every single day.
And Women's Brigades fight alongside men.
So, might I suggest something to those who have posted ignorant, bigoted or downright racist comments here?
Try reading a History book every now and then.
Or if that's too much effort, educate yourself by simply Googling it... ;)

I wouldn't call kurds muslims, centuries of brainwashing and forced conversion is the result of them being muslim. kurds are kurds first and muslim second, modern kurds are disassociating themselves with islam since it is an arab religion that was forced on them and ISIS is helping kurds turn away from islam. If it wasn't for the arabs kurds probably would have become christian or zoroastrian.

It was a country but after ww1 in the sykes picot agreement, the british and french split up the kurdish nation into 4 different countries and now kurds are fighting to get it back.

It got split up after WW1, and the countries involved have all actively worked to keep the Kurds from getting their country back together due to the enormous amount of oil within.

they have an Autonomous region, the kurds were supposed to have a country which stretches from turkey to iran. the Turks backstabbed the kurds during ww1 treaty when they were laying down country lines so they never got a country of their own. Kurds are not gypsies, they are the oldest people still living in their homeland in the middle east. people are spreading lies about them being gypsies mostly turks and arabs.

I just heard from a well known Kurdish Reporter that the current Turkish Government treats the Kurds well in Turkey. Other than bombing the PKK, Turks have treated them well. They still have somethings to work on though.

Have you seen videos of chefs like Gordon Ramsey? They all cut with their fingers just behind the knife.

Not at the fingertips, though. Chefs like Gordon Ramsay advocate for curling your fingers when cutting so as to avoid accidentally cutting one's fingers.
It's a bit troubling that your first assumption of my comment was intended as a bigoted and discriminating on. My comment was to note about how accidentally cutting yourself is nothing compared to the hardships of escaping a war-torn country.

My problem is that the people who made this video, documentary or whatever, did it in the aim of making kurds look like islamists, which we are not. These kurds are very religous islamic kurds, but most kurds are not this religous. It makes people think that all kurds are like these people. It's the image that's being shown to people is what my problem is..
